- Epoxy-coated drawer slides, ball-bearing slides, and bottom-mounted slides are three common types of slide hardware for drawer cabinets. WOOD's Kevin Boyle explains how to choose between the styles, the advantages and disadvantages of each, and shows a simple way to install each type. Kevin got all of the slides and accessories shown in this video from Woodworker's Hardware: www.wwhardware.com/shop-hardw...

What a great DIY video! You did everything right. I needed to understand this topic. Good strong light, clear audio, close up views, full project views, explained clearly, showed process, showed alternate options, spoke at the right speed so we could follow, and we also got to see your workshop. I'm grateful for your excellent demos and the outstanding way you did this DIY video. Thank you, Kevin!
Agreed. This is how it should always be done.
Well said. This is a concise top notch video. My time watching this was well invested. Thanks much for an excellent tutorial.
This video just saved me making a bunch of mistakes with constructing my new drawers. I'd forgot to allow for the width of the slides! Fortunately I hadn't cut the bottom of the drawer yet or drilled into the back of the front of the drawer, so I can make the drawer narrower. Thanks once again Kevin!
Finally, a good tutorial on these drawer slides. 🙏🏻 Thank you!!
Fantastic tutorial, Amazing!!!!
Great video showing some of the tips on how to avoid being out of square/level. i like to use a combination square to support the track with the sliding ruler set at the proper distance from the front of the track which allows you to support the track at the same distance in the rear as the front and be able to screw in the rear bracket dead on. Acts like an adjustable jig that supports the track
Even though I wasn't installing any of the slides shown, the installation basics were covered very well and helped a lot. Especially how to use the mounting holes and/or slots correctly.
hi! just wanted to leave a thank you comment! i was building a desk i got off of wayfair and the instructions were a bit messy and i messed up on the drawers. thankfully i found your video and figured out where i went wrong! simple fix and now my desk came out super cute!
Very comprehensive video. Clearly presented, verbal directions well stated, 3 types of glides discussed step by step. Nice introduction of tool options to make the job easier budget allowing. Thanks for the help Mr. Boyle!
Ok are you from the tutorial academy or what? who gave you the authority to grade this tutorial video? do you have any credentials?
Because if you dont, well then we dont need your opinion!!.....and please excuse yourselve with the fellow carpeters and leave.
I almost can not believe the nerve of some people jeeez!!
I wanted to say thank you... I’ve now fitted the drawer slides 🙏🏾
This is why I love CZcams... not a carpenter here. Looking at this stuff for the first time. Nice, clear, concise, introductory material. Thanks for posting.
This video was so helpful! We are going to be renovating an old, well cared for, 1960’s house and I don’t want to remove the old drawers, just make them work better ❤ I appreciate this so much! Thank you!
When not yet installed, make sure the carcass is level before relying on the level for drawer slides. I know you know this, while you are making your video at same time it was simply overlooked. You make this very understandable for the less advanced. Well done man! I like this style.
Thank you.
I was having trouble "seeing" all the options to fixing up a 1972 cabinet. Need to do one drawer repair right now but wanted to fix it how I wanted all the rest. But once I saw all the slider options I went cross-eyed. Now I see the method of new I can better understand how I'm going to replace. You know, in the dark and spider monkey like someone posted. But knowing what needs be done, I can now adapt. So again, great post and thank you
Thanks very informative. Spent a whole day fixing bedroom drawers. Wished I had watched this earlier.
OMG THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!! I'VE BEEN TRYING TO INSTALL THESE DRAWERS FOR OVER A MONTH!! GOD BLESS YOU 😊❤
Good vid. If you are here strictly for the bottom mounted center slide, you can fast forward to 14:00.
Thanks dude
I love how you explain everything clearly. Thanks 😊
The real fun is when you're fitting drawers to an existing cabinet (which already has a top and back installed), which requires spider monkey arms and a flashlight to see what you're doing. Good luck measuring for square and parallel inside a deep, dark cabinet carcass!
True
Thats what I'm dealing with now. Lol
@@vicspeed1068 That's What I'm dealing with too. lol
@@sillycandi584 It ended up looking good and works smooth as silk, but only after lots of profanity and digging my level out from around cabinet sliders and a little adjustment.
@@vicspeed1068 I’ve got 2 more to do until I’m done. I just just did like 2 a day over the course of a few days because it took so long to get everything straight and crawling into tiny spaces. Lol
I was struggling to fit the drawer runners. This video explained it perfectly and they now fit properly.
ugh thank you so much!!!! i had these things and didnt even know what to call them to try and find a video about em and forget about mounting/installing them i was at it for days trying to nail down the whole thing!! again much appreciated.
Thank you very much! Installing the epoxy-coated, drawer slides is quite a mystery for a totally inexperienced person. Especially if they are not marked (Left/Right), and you don't have already assembled drawer, to see how it's made. ☺️
God bless you.
Thanks for the video. This was simple without being boring. 👍
Very good demonstrations and showing each step.
I really like tha you showed how to correct an error in the first drawer slide.
Please keep up the good work.
Pro tip: if you're going to use a level to mount the slides, first make sure the cabinet itself is level. Don't ask me how I know.
How do you know
Exactly what i came down here for, you took care of it already.
what if the floor the cabinet sits on isn't level?
@@abelinkin Then the drawer slides gone wrong when cabinets gone level!
@@abelinkin
Suggest:
Issue : your cupboard does not sit level because your floor is not level
Fix: add lifts under cupboard to level cupboard (just like you would a table that rocks in restaurant)
Result : cupboard now level ..now proceed to installing draw slides
Or just lay large beams or planks which are level and sit your cupboard on them for duration of installation
Obvious but I bet a few DIYers will be thinking..should I relay the whole floor !!!
Best video I seen on drawers. Great delivery and explanation. Thanks.
Thank you so much! The directions in the dresser I purchased were horrible, so you saved the day!
Excellent video. Best one I have seen so far on installing drawer slides.
Thanks. Got the slides and had no idea how to properly mount them. Done now!!
Thanks so much for posting this! I had a slide-end piece that had cracked apart, and after watching this, realized that was all I had to replace, not the whole rail. Awesome! Had no idea how to approach this fix and this was so helpful.

Very useful video and well explained. Thanks!
thanks for this video, you've just made me look like a legend after watching this tutorial and then being able to fix the broken drawers in my daughter's room. Thank you!
thank you for this I never used full extension slides and thanks to this video I can now separate them!! THANKS!!
Good job, liked your workshop. Neat clean, arrangment, organising tools. Your clothes ,Apron ,its pocket.awesome . Very good.
Great Tips. Nice demonstration. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much. I think i'm going to go with the middle drawer slides.
My next build is looking very happy. Great stuff!! Thanks 🥳.
Thanks it help me a lot for my first drawer project
Thank you so much for that info I worried that my cabinet was not square you made my life so much easier I spent nine months on this project already
Great tutorial. Thanks for making it.
Thank you for explaining that you may have to push the drawer in a little forcefully. I was worried my slides were installed incorrectly. because the drawer would only go back halfway. That encouraged me to give mine the push and they work perfectly.
Nice and methodical, well-lit and nicely edited. The only topic left out is the assumption that the floor and hence the cabinet are level. Not always so. Using a torpedo level for alignment does NOT always work. Concrete floors are not always level. Old wooden floors are not always level. Check the case for level before work begins. I tend to align by measurement and fit only to by-pass any problems.
Thanks for uploading such video
Thank you, great video!
thank you. you really make it look easy!
So excellent! Most videos seem to skip this info..Thanks!
Thank you, you video was very informative.
Thanks! just a couple questions - Can I use 2 under mount slides? Can I use side slides as undermount?
Nice for new installs, easy access and no top surfaces to deal with. Try retrofitting any of these on an old chest of drawers or kitchen drawers. Not quite as easy or as much fun. Nice video for new applications.
Great video, I was just learning to install the drawers
Where do you get the front brace?
Great video. Many thanks.
Thanks for this video, I am in need of install this drawer slides 😊
Great job :) great explanations and camera work
It is good to learn something new. Thank you sir.
I'm trying to remove a draw to repair it from a bottom center mount side and can't seem to remove the drawer. There is no release clip like side mount to release. Any suggestions?
Thanks, I needed to see that center mount installation!
I could not figure out how to disconnect the drawer until I watched your video. Thank you.
excellent information and well explained, thanks for taking the time!.
I found this very helpful with my useless UK user guide for a desk I bought - many thanks!
Thanks for a great video! I am reworking a 16 drawer cabinet and want to add drawer slides to all drawers
good tutorial. Many thanks
Thank you for explaining everything so clearly. I'd like to know where I could purchase those heavy-duty pulls as I am doing a kitchen redo and this is exactly what I need to know!
Very well presented!
Great tips - outstanding content!
Very complete, well done, now I'll try it 🧐
Thanks for this great demonstration.
Other than the fact that undermount runners have a perpendicular flange to be fixed to the back of the carcase, are they any different than side mount bearing type runners? Could I use a side mount bearing type runners under a drawer? My situation is that the drawer is supported on a flat plank of plywood. I want to use a runner to enable smooth directional movement.
Thanks for a really good video!
How do you decide on the width of the draw for it to fit perfectly? I'm using the roller bearing slides.
good teacher,thanks alot
Good video. Smart tips.
I'm in a 34 year old house where all of the plastic brackets have broken and been repaired with various methods over the years. And they were badly installed in the first place so that some of the tracks sloped vertically and were out of line horizontally. I wound up removing all the old brackets and put a 4" wide strip of 3/4 plywood behind the tracks. The plywood is screwed to the cabinet sides and the tracks are screwed to the plywood which gives almost a perfect horizontal alignment. Some washers made the final horizontal adjustment. For the vertical alignment I cut notches in another piece of plywood and used that to support the tracks while they were being attached to the plywood. Because of old age and limited mobility this took about 6 hours to do but it's hopefully fixed forever now.
Great Tutorial. Just wondering. Home Depot and Lowes only carry the side mount slides without the rear bracket mount. Am I missing something?
WOOD magazine thank you! Ordered the amazon ones!
So after two mounts, I realize that I needed a center mount just like you did on the last one. I am trying to replace old 1982 hardware that is not useable. Anyway, I get the center mounts I screw it in, I go to the test the drawer. Two things occurred, first the screw went through the particle board. Second, when I tested the drawer, the mount came right off the bottom of drawer with the screws. So, without replacing all my drawers, what can I do to reinforce? Do I add another 1/4 inch plywood to the inside of each drawer with glue, then screw in? I think the center mounts is the way to go. Particle board just doesn’t cut it. Thanks!
This just the training Video I need. Thank you.
Very good video Thanks
Trying 2 repair my old dresser drawers and I just can't seem 2 level on both sides so the darn drawer slides in and out easy. The drawer doesn't slide in all the way or it goes in 2 much on the right side. I am HOPING that the blue magnet grip thing u used will FINALLY help with fixing my old dresser drawers! Thanks 💕🐢💕
appreciate the help. did the job for me
Can you explain how to set the runners back to allow for the drawer face if you are installing flush drawer?
Thank you so much. Very helpful. First time I do this.
This video helped me a ton. I can't seem to find a soft close device that will work without filling in the gap between the slide and the cabinet wall with a piece of wood to fasten the soft close hardware to. Any suggestions?
Nice work . . . thanks
Ron Budman vvh.
'm replacing drawer slides on older cabinets with soft close slides (rear bracket mount) and the slides rubbed a grove down both sides of the drawer after install. Is there a correct way to solve my clearance issue? The slides require a 1/2" on each side, I have that when measuring but the outer part of the slides still rub the drawer box making it hard to close/operate.
Thanks for putting this very informative video out there. I think the ball bearing sliders are the way to go in many applications if not most, for both costs & long term function.
I have an old kitchen floor cabinet from the 50's very similar to your cabinet dimension shown here that I have converted to a mobile floor cabinet used with a miter saw & doubles as a outfeed table for my table saw as well. My old cabinet has the (1) original pull out drawer on wooden slides & naturally it requires wiggling back & forth & side to side to pull it out. With a little imagination I will convert it to a ball bearing slider arrangement, similar to what you have demonstrated in this thoughtful video. No two situations are rarely identical, but you have clearly demonstrated (3) possible scenarios with some variables to correctly install drawer slides.
Thank you,
Bill Farr... :-)
Great demo video with easy to follow instruction s and tips. However, many times when replacing a drawer, you don't have the top open, so access is much more difficult than described in the video.
Still very helpful though.
Thoroughly explained the details and steps. Great tips!! Thanks!
What kind of screws do you use for a soft close full extension side mount slides??
Thanks for the video. It is really good!
do you have a link to that rear adjustable bracket you use. I looked on the website but couldn't find it.
This was very helpful, I put together a tv stand and only 2 of the 3 drawers work, it might very well be that i butted up the drawer slide too much on the drawer. Fingers crossed this works :)
Video is extremely helpful, thank you. Can you tell me which company made your full extension slides and where purchased?. I cannot find slides with the front mounting bracket. Thanks again!
The best of all other videos, thanks
Could you tell us what brackets you purchased for the drawer starting for the ones you use at 10:18 - 10:50? I purchased a slide very similar to the one you're using but it did not come with brackets.
I have the same slides as the first example, the white ones (1/2'" on each side wide). I would like to replace them with the something like the second example. The link you provide takes you to a page of 920 products. Can you provide any assistance?
must be nice to install standing up and not on your back in a space half the size as your body
lol
Yeah, I love those demos of plumbing where the folks are standing up in a nice clean basement, sweating brand-new copper. What I want to see is the demo in the crawlspace with the rusty galvanized pipes! ;-) Great Video, in any case...
Could you use a speed square to align the under mount slides?
Hello, thanks for this, . Regarding the bottom mounted ballbearing center mount slide, I have installed this and now a month or so later the drawer will only come out half way before there is a hard stop. I have tried to stick a metal piece in the holes when I pull out to see if that helps catch the slide to pull off the drawer, but no success. Any tips on how to get that drawer to come our fully, or completely take it out to fix/replace the slide? thanks for your time and help. Joe
My current monorail slide is screwed into the cabinet's bottom support at both the front and back. It does not attach to the back. (This is a dresser) Is there a different model ball bearing slide I would order for this application or could these slide be screwed into the bottom?
help.....my drawers are 5 inches from the back of the cabinet, i am not sure how to work with that....build the back cabinet up with blocks or build a new drawer .... any suggestions
I lost one side of roller slides that go into the cabinets. And I cannot find a spare anywhere in stores or online. Can I install ball bearing slides on one side of the drawer and leave the roller slides on the other? Like a hybrid system?
Hello. This was an excellent presentation. I saw many clips but none of them were as elucidate as yours. I have Richelieu self closing drawer slide. I can find the rear mount but I can not find the front one. What brand are you using ? If I get Accuride rear and front mounting would it work ? Can I have the exact specifications of your ? I really appreciate your input.
I'm wanting to upgrade my kitchen cabinet drawers but the 2 slides are on the bottom of the drawer. Would I still be able to use the ballbearing slides?
on epoxy slides what needs to be the clearance between the width of the draw and the face frame?
