Moving to Ireland | Buying Land | Self Sufficiency and Cottage renovations LAND TOUR
Vložit
- čas přidán 25. 06. 2021
- This week we finally move onto the land in west Clare Ireland and explore the wild 8 acres. We begin planning the cottage and land for our new self sufficient, off grid small holding. Overwhelming gratitude for us this week as we move in and take in our new surroundings.

We are- a family of four,
Mum- Annie,
Dad-Bruce
Two children Elsie and Betsy
One dog - Doug
and we decided to trade our busy life as home and business owners to chase the dream we’ve harboured for 10years.
Pickles the van-
We first bought our Mercedes MWB sprinter van for £700 back in 2012 and converted it ourselves on a very tight budget! After 6 years of awesome adventures we needed to find a van that was better suited to us as a growing family of four and one all important van dog!
We all felt too attached to Pickles to get rid, so we stripped him bare and started again.
We cut the roof off to maximise our space and created what we now proudly call our home on wheels.
Check out our van build on our Instagram stories ~ thenomadicals
How did we get here
After years of saying one day, we finally realised that these opportunities don’t just land in your lap and if we seriously wanted to travel Europe as a family in our self converted sprinter camper van then we were going to have to be brave and make it happen.
We sold all our stuff, our house and our camper conversion business and landed in a dream come true.
Our timing may be a little of what with a global pandemic and Brexit round the corner but I know that when we set our minds and hearts to something we always make it work.
Now we’ve made this dream a reality there is no stopping us! our plan is to travel to new places, see new things, meet new people and learn new skills that will guide us on our journey of finding land and creating a way of life that sings to us, one where we aren’t bound to the banks, working every hour and outsourcing all of our needs. A simple way of life, with connection to ourselves, each other, the earth and our community.

Annie is Irish, I’m half Irish and my ancestors come from the area we have just moved to. I’m going to pin a comment addressing these comments as yours hasn’t been the first along these lines. I love Ireland, this is my home and I am well aware of the history of the British and what they did to Ireland. I first came to Ireland when I met Annie and her family and began my learning journey. The history of Ireland is not taught in British schools. In my journey through life so far I have found that assumptions and judgements are best kept at bay until facts have been established and that to live with an open heart and acceptance of human beings no matter where in the world they come from serves me best.
I didn't see the comment you are referring to but you shouldn't have to explain yourself. My Brother in law is an Essex man and has to put up with this stuff occasionally.
Most people don't give a toss about this stuff.
Fáilte abhaile agús go gcuire dia an t adh oraibh. Welcome home and may god put luck upon you all.
Place looks beautiful. 👍
@@antseanbheanbocht4993 thank you for this comment. I have had mainly good and encouraging comments. Only a couple of negatives but had the loaded question are we Irish. I don’t know a lot of Irish yet but Sláinte chugat!
@@OffGridBruce Go raibh mile maith agat mo chara.
Thanks a million my friend.
You could try duolingo if interested, its free and will be handy if the kids learn Irish at School, its generally a compulsory subject. 👍
@@antseanbheanbocht4993 I did try duo lingo but it didn’t have any sound for pronunciation
@@OffGridBruce I have it on android with sound available, not all questions have audio though. I think you may have to enable it in duolingo settings.
👍
A lovely wife, two beautyfull kids, a place to live that's like a paradise....
No matter how busy you are, every day take a minute to realize how blessed you are.
Very good advice there. I do feel extremely lucky to be doing what I’m doing right now
Welcome to Ireland.... nice area you're setting up in. The house doesn't look too bad either..... hope you can fulfill your dreams there, it's a lovely place to bring up children. Best of luck
Thank you 🙏 it’s a lovely area. Thanks for the good wishes
@LASTBUTONE silly comment
@LASTBUTONE you're just looking for a reaction to your nonsense.... you're not worth arguing with.
@LASTBUTONE Yeah the last bunch who invaded tried that line as well. It didn't work out to well for them.
Talk about take yourself back to simpler ways. I'm in love. Subscribed. ❤
I wish you and your family success with your new home 🏡 welcome to Ireland, good time to be off grid as much as possible, most people asleep to what's going on around them in the world today .
Thank you. Feel full of gratitude to be here
Congratulations, on your beautiful find. It looks amazing!
I moved over to Ireland ten years ago to do self-sufficient living, best decision I ever made. Used to travel a lot before, but now I feel like I'm on a permanent (work) holiday.
Enjoy!
Thanks, yes i already feel liberated by the never ending list of work. It will never be finished and I love it :)
@@OffGridBruce Those moments when you want to pull your hair out will come too, but it's all part of the ride ;-)
@@2listen2u I have already lost most of my hair 😂

Super super pleased for you. I to believe doesn’t matter where you come from be kind and fill the air with love and happiness and you’ll get that in return.
Bruce! Been following your journey for a couple years now. Legends, all of you! Just about to complete on my own plot in Ireland, just wanted you to know that you guys are a real inspiration, in action not just words! Best of luck and cheers for sharing everything over the years
I wish you the very best of luck
Big Admiration that's living not trapped in an over priced Apartment and sitting in front of a computer all day and handling your salary to the landlord or the bank
Thanks James
The new place looks absolutely amazeballs.... your dreams are coming true. Thats what happens when you take a leap of faith and believe in yourselves... much love.. ❤
Thanks guys! Feeing totally blessed right now

Congrats on achieving your dream! Welcome to Ireland and I hope you love Co. Clare as much as I did when I lived there (I'm from Westmeath originally). Can't wait to see what you do.
Thanks very much. We love Co Clare :)
The secret to having a future is always replace what you use. If you cut down a tree, you plant another ect. It is really as simple as that.
How bloody wonderfully may the blessings keep coming for you 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️🌈🌈🌈🏴
Dreams do come true for those who have the courage to chase them.
Welcome to Ireland from Tipperary

CONGRATULATIONS !
Thanks, it does feel particularly epic at the moment :)
Karma that the other place fell through, this was just waiting for youto connect with it! The good thing about having so much to do is that a lot can be done pretty much when you fancy it so not a chore! So pleased for you all. Cottage looks amazing too, and having the space must be fairly liberating, much as vanlife is great....space is what you miss after a while. ❤️
Thanks Ruth, we feel the same. Almost a Devine intervention. Kids are loving the space and freedom to explore by themselves ❤️☘️
Well done guys. Ye are all an inspiration!. The place looks magical ♥️

@@OffGridBruce , no need to get back to me ,I know you are busy. Just a thought , have you looked into growing ginseng? I've not tried it myself , but planted in your forest maybe a good idea for yearly cash or left for emergencies. Just a thought , have a good Sunday, hope you reserve q day a week fir rest
@@scrapsmithmorgan5255 I haven’t actually thought of that at all. Will have a look into it. Had a day off yesterday at the beach. It was just too hot to do anymore work
My mum used to grow all our food. She kept 15 hens, had massive gardens for church flowers. Dad cut turf in a rented bog, then mum spread, footed, lumped it. They also had an oil tank and a range that used oil. Fire in lounge heated front of house, range heated rest. Big 7 bedroom house, big kitchen big dining room too.
B and B mum did. Dad was plant hire guy plus a fisherman with a big boat. Dad had to work. Mum had 4 kids. We had instruments and a great life. Choir big part as mum was choir director. If kids become workers it's half the battle.
Great life.
Sounds great! The kids like to chip in most of the time. I haven’t ever cut the turf but turned and stacked it. I know it must have been hard work. Hopefully we will be getting some hens in the near future
This is such a natural way to live. Connecting with nature is amazing
Excellent My Friends You Have Now Achieved The Only Real Way To Love To Live To Thrive !!! Land !!!
I have been following Mossy Bottom who has accomplished amazing feats in my honest opinion. Wish I could go back and do that.
You forgot one major point on the list: build trails! And a pumptrack around the whole property! 😍
I had thought I could integrate Hügelkultur mounds. Permaculture jumps :)
Welcome home to you and your family!i hope your channel grows and grows it looks like you have lots of work ahead of you but what a lovely spot to live in,best of luck with everything and good on you for taking this project on
Thanks Edmond for the kind wishes :) a lifetime of work here i think
It's a beautiful stop delighted it worked out
Sometimes I wonder, Is it always quiet? In Belgium a lot of farmers build a temporary tent to give a very loud party with the admission of the local authority. Sometimes until 4 a.m. you can hear loud bass noises. Also a new trend: a summer bar with many people and loud music in rural places. I associate party and noise with a city but not in rural places. Greetings from Belgium.
If we have any parties here it’s normally instruments with no amplification and a fire :)
A hundred thousand welcomes to you and family..wish ye a the very best..i live away down south on the cork and kerry border....i also lived in London..but wouldn't swop Ireland for anyplace in the world ..il be following ye on yer fabulous adventure....🙏..

So happy for you and your family. Just found your CZcams video and will be looking forward to watching the videos to come. Congratulations on living your dream..😊 I've wanted to come to Ireland for years but never able to make it happen due to life circumstances plus being a US citizen I would have had difficulty getting a resident Visa. @@OffGridBruce good advice 👌 thanks 😁
If you have already learned to not assume and to be non judgemental, to have an open heart and accept others for who they are, not the blood in their veins, you, I believe, are on the right path to a happy and blessed life. Also, your children notice these virtues and will make them their own.
Thanks Adam. I do feel blessed to be here
Wow! Wonderful piece of the earth you have there. Must feel great to call that home
I definitely does. Feel very blessed

Excellent! You have done what I have been dallying about for a few years now :O. Fear of the unknown has kept me pinned in place - well that and fear of being too old to be able to make a go of it as my retirement years are staring me in the face!
Ah my mind still tells me I can’t do things sometimes. I just ignore it 😂
Welcome back to Ireland....just subscribed...ready for the journey
What a paradise, it's beautiful. Ric, ontario canada
Thanks Rick it really is :)

Well Done !!!! And welcome in West Ireland ...
We made the same " jump" and we are on the border between County of Mayo and county of Roscommon
Your are welcome any time for a tea or coffee cup ...
Thanks very much that sounds lovely :)
If you have willow, sweet Chestnut and hazel in those woods they can all be Coppiced which would be both beneficial to you and the ecosystem as a whole.
We have no sweet chestnut unfortunately but we do have a little hazel and loads of willow. We plan on having a SRC for all our firewood eventually
I hope when I come to Ireland I can find a nice farm to buy
very very really nice

Great Vids, keep up the work👍👍👍
First up, I would like to welcome you two children of Ireland, and your offspring, back to your homeland!
Sorry I'm a bit late to the party, but your videos were recommended to me by Mr CZcams O'Algorithm a few hours ago, and I've been binge-watching ever since.
I'm ashamed that even in our beloved land, the science of statistics dictates that out of a population of 5 million people, there will be approximately 33 people who can be categorised as xenophobic/weirdo/oddball/begrudger/nutter, and unfortunately, you've met about 10 of these in this comments section. The remaining 23 are otherwise occupied with the Covid Conspiracy Theories section of CZcams, thankfully.
I really wish you all the best on this exciting new journey!
Thank you for the welcome. My real life experience is one of welcome and acceptance. Always a risk when you put your life online i guess

Pigs Are Good at Cleaning Fields. Fantastic Music !
We are going to get a couple of kunekune pigs :)
Lovely spot you have found to live life. My wife and I are significantly older than you and our lad has grown up and left home. Before Brexit we were planning to sell up in England and move over to a simpler life on the west coast. Brexit killed the dream. We were so angry we stopped even talking about it as a possibility. But just recently I'm thinking about it again and then your channel just popped up as a recommend, how strange. One question I have is how did you manage to in effect import your belongings from UK. I briefly looked into it and it seemed almost impossible needing receipts ect. I hope all your dreams for life are fulfilled. Keep making your videos and inspire.
Hi Stephen, it was no issue at all. We just packed a van and brought it over. Customs had a quick look and sent us on our way. The uk and Ireland have a common travel arrangement so Irish citizens can continue to live and work in the uk and vice versa. We certainly count ourselves beyond lucky to have this place to begin our dream. I have plenty to film these days but not a lot of time to edit it all together :)
@@OffGridBruce That's amazing to hear it worked so simply. I must start looking into this again as the paperwork seemed too complicated . With covid we have just not been over to Ireland for so long and it's easier to work out if you are actually there in person. Enjoy what's left of the summer days.
@@stephenbell6366 I don't know about the UK-Ireland specifically, but something I've found personally (being married to a non-EU citizen in the EU), if you find paperwork difficult to get your head around, hire an immigration lawyer to do it for you. It will be the best money you've spent in a long while.
Super nice place... Gonna follow your journey!!!
