- Join me and Charlotte as we head to Alton Towers to check out the latest updates, along with riding on our favourite coasters at the park. After over 3 months of operation we check out how Wicker Man is running compared to when it first opened back in March 2018. Along with that we talk about this years Scarefest event, including a first look at the construction taking place over in the towers ruins.
We also take a stroll through Cloud Cuckoo Land and have a closer look at Nemesis Sub Terra along with sharing our thoughts on what we'd like to see happen to both of these areas of the park. All of this and more mixed in with plenty of off ride footage from the various different attractions at Alton Towers!

Hey everyone! Going to Alton Towers soon? Here’s some tips from a Coaster Enthusiast
1. The smiler is COMPLETELY safe. The crash was a human error and the media reported it badly, giving AT a bad rep.
2. If you’re waiting for something (i.e. a friend to show up) Oblivion has a constant five minute queue.
3. If you want to go on Wickerman with the fastest queue possible, arrive at the park at 9 and get on it first thing.
4. All coasters are more intense (and fun) at the back, however the park is beautiful and you may want to ride the front.
5. For the last hour of the day, Nemesis is always a walk on. It may say it’s closed but if the chains not there, you can ride. I rode it 10 times in one day thanks to this :)
6. Rita isn’t worth it if you’ve already been on a launch coaster (i.e stealth, formula rossa) and the queue is over half an hour.
7. The £5-£7 refillable cups are a bargain and you should definitely buy one.
8. Get your car park tickets in the middle of the day, because at the start and end the queues are loooooooong.
9. Or if you don’t wanna do that, go on the biggest rides in the middle of the day as everyone else is having lunch.
10. Finally, stay safe, don’t be stupid and have fun!

I'm aiming to go in June hopefully so I'll definitely take these tips on board
I wouldn’t get the refillable bottles if you don’t mind water. You can just bring a bottle from home and there are various water fountains you can use for free
I’d recommend the smiler at the end of the day because that’s when the queues are short for it and you might get dizzy for a while so you would want to do it at the end. I was slightly dizzy even when I got home from it but it is a good ride

TH13TEEN is honestly one of my favourite rides at Alton Towers - I just love hearing the reactions of people riding it for the first time!

I know the schools are still in but a 4pm close for a park is depressing.
Merlin budget cuts have hit the place hard.
It really is very early, it should be 5pm minimum like it was for many years
It closes at 5pm on weekends and certain weeks. They had later closing this week too.
EDIT: I went a few days after posting this and it closed at 6pm despite the website saying 5pm
6pm this past Sunday! I could have gotten a second Smiler ride but my friend had had enough by that point

I went here 2 weeks ago ( I live down south near Thorpe Park) and I forgot how intense back row on Nemesis was and Wicker Man is incredible!

The park closes at 4! Your at a theme park not visiting your mother at a retirement home

Jelly bean that's still to early if they want to be a major theme park they need nighttime offerings
Thing is you pay so much money to go to Alton towers and you can only get on around six rides. Something's always broken and it closes too early. They should keep the park open until 7 or 8 in my opinion
Gabriel Dally I went at the weekend and it didn’t close until 6 but the website said 5, so it’s not very clear. Still not very late, especially seeing as there is 4 hotels attached to it.
It's 6pm all summer.
So I was just at Alton Towers 2 weeks ago, and what really set Hex over the edge for me was the SMELL in the second preshow chamber. The dusty smell of the Towers just isn't something you can replicate, and that age and history combined with the storytelling used makes me feel that Hex is possibly one of the best themed dark rides in the WORLD. It's even better than a good number of Disney attractions IMO.
Well, the age and seeing the actual chained oak just down the road from the resort. THAT. was cool.

Exams are more nerve wracking than any coaster. Approach them in the same way as you would a coaster you were nervous about. Afterwards you will feel fine. Best of luck 👍

Alton needs to reopen it's current closed rides, and add 2 or 3 thrilling flat rides. It's a must at this point.
Streeteda how would they reopen corkscrew? It was scrapped for parts, and i don’t believe Vekoma makes the corkscrew anymore and Arrow are out of business.

That is a shame about the Wicker Man effects. It does seem like a one off though, as everything was fine when I visited just over a week ago. I do hope they maintain Wicker Man, and the rest of the park, well moving forwards. :)

I'd like a sort of fast queue that skips the bit inside, it's great the first time maybe second but after that I just want to jump right on.

This is the first Alton Towers vlog you've done where you've been able to really be open about your opinions of everything in the park. Really interesting to hear your genuine thoughts now that you're not restricted by being an employee.

I rode the smiler for the first time about a month ago, we fast tracked and we got to the front of the que and I started tearing up because I was TERRIFIED we actually got put in the front row and I said to my dad before we sat down “I don’t want to do it” and he shouted “SIT DOWN” and I rode it and I’m so glad my dad got me to because that is now probably my favourite ride😂❤️
I remember that me and my friend got on it so fast with fast track so I didn’t even get time to be scared about it or see it, I got really scared for nemesis tho lol
Hex the legend of the Towers is a great ride. Love the backstory to. The Alton Towers castle and gardens is just a beautiful place.

Great to hear your various musings on Alton Towers. I think our views on this iconic park are pretty similar!! I was disappointed to see the state it was in when I visited around 2015 but to be fair, having had a season pass for the first time ever in 2017/2018 and visited a few times, it does seem like they're making constant improvements to try and get it back to its glory days. Also you've got to hand it to them for Wicker Man. I hope they funnel more and more cash into the park over the next five-ten years, especially on staff/operations and general upkeep.

I think Sub Terra looks just great as it is. Adds to the rawness and vibe of it. Sad that it has been closed for so long. This was an attraction I hadn’t heard of until I got to the park but left there with this one at the forefront of my mind. A very immersive experience. Good actors as well. I ended up heading the escape and was thinking “Why me?” I was out of my comfort zone but really enjoyed it immensely. Best surprise of the day and there was nothing else like it in the park. Second best attraction of the day to Nemesis. Great coupling of themes ❤️

I went to towers on Wednesday and loved it as usually but I do think now that the smiler needs a bit of a TLC for example making sure all the projects are working in the indoor que section more theming around the ride and in the que line and etc who agrees ??????
It just needs a major cleanup, it dont need additions what so ever. Recently they fixed The Smiler's speakers... Its now 2x louder then the start of the season which is fab so its small stuff.
I don’t think they need any more theming at all but it does need cleaning up
It’s crazy how early Scarefest preparations start up there! You wouldn’t get that at Thorpe 😉😂
It is extremely early, they used to employ more technicians to build the mazes so it could start later. Now they employ less meaning it starts much earlier and the towers have to close!
I love this video. It’s 2 years today since I became an enthusiast and this was the first video of yours that I watched. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to pre book tickets for any of the parks for opening weekend because they went so quickly but luckily I managed to get tickets for Thorpe park on July 11th, which will be the first time I’ve been there for about 6 years. I’ll have 5 new creds to get there and I cannot wait to get back to the parks! 👍😁

Alton tower's holds many memories for me, all good. I used to go twice a year. Loved it. Two years ago, I went after a two year gap. The degeneration of the park was heart breaking. It truly now is running on reputation alone. Your video says to me, andi love your channel Shaun, that the park hasn't really improved. Turning the fire off on your biggest attraction??? Crap. And the complaints I made aboutSub Terra, and the nemesis queue, which was acknowledged and apologised for by management, have not changed. Towers loving care was a con for me. Such a shame. The Alton magic died. 4pm close in June??? Park's done I fear. Great content Shaun. As always.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, the magic died many years ago sadly. I still enjoy visits to the park every so often, mainly to see what's going on and for the events
Fatman Skills park will never be done the amount of people that go and the amount of people that pay stupid money won’t ever die the staff do need more customers service and the park should be open till at least 6 in the summer

I know this is never going to happen but i would love if Alton Towers went full coaster and ditched cloud cuckoo land, for me cuckoo land isn't doing enough for the park and Alton could do a lot better if they planted more thrill seeking coasters and a couple more dark rides.

Joseph Hare I went on it around 8 months ago and the headsets were broken/turned of for the day. I got to ride it 6 times in a row and apart from one time when I had to wait for a minute or two, it was a walk on.

These vlogs are so helpful for me. I'm going to Alton towers for the first time in a few years during the summer and these vlogs have more info on the rides than the actual Alton towers website does!
It’s depressing how inefficiently oblivion is running now it seems like it’s taking around 150 seconds per train which causes really long waits when the Park is busy. Then there is always a crazy long wait on the break run before you can get off. Unsurprisingly the station is really understaffed. Also why are single rider queues not a thing here anymore, I’ve just got back from a Europa Park trip and they work perfectly there.

I left Alton Towers after 7 years as I just didn't enjoy it as much due to various operational changes. I left on good terms and still have many friends that work for the park
I noticed this too. I’d say he feels he can be more honest now that he doesn’t work there.
I thought his comments were perfectly reasonable. There isn't anything passive aggressive about pointing out the good and bad points of the park.
I like the park LOTS I go every weekend and I have noticed that something's do need making better such as
Nemesis sub terra
Cloud cuckoo land
And the sky ride needs to stop less I haven't been on it without it stopping ONCE

Been here today and finally got on Wicker Man! Maybe it’s because I like wood so much but the theming and coaster together means it’s now my top UK coaster! Great Vlog as always ! :)
I’ve been to Disney way to many times (my parents love it) but despite that my mom said that her favourite coaster was still Nemesis, and we last went in 2011. So I convinced them to go again and it was my first time on the coasters, and I decided that my favourite coaster was Smiler, but Nemesis is 2, Wickerman 3 and Galactica 4.
Oh boy my favourite series from my favourite channel! I really enjoy your videos, but I would appreciate enormously if you would post on your twitter the dates when you visit certain theme parks.
For example, when you're certain you will be visiting Alton Towers, you let us know on twitter.

50th like,I love all the vlogs and I love Alton towers it was the first theme park I've ever been to and I'm actually afraid of rollercoasters so if you have and tips to getting over that fear they would be greatly appreciated

like tell yourself it's completely safe - because it is, they've all been tested!
and then you've just gotta get in the queue with a friend and do it! i haven't been able to do any of the biggest ones but i'm working on it aha
also watch pov videos on youtube so you know exactly what to expect, that always helps.
suck it up and get on one... its the only way bro, i'm not being a troll, its true... best way to overcome fears are to face them head on. . . . just remember how many people get on rides all over the world each year alone and get off them fine.

Ok I felt the same at one point that one point just had to be 4 years but...it all changed on my Galactica experience I used the vr because I was scared of it being air...but just before the corkscrew the vr came off and I did a loop and felt an amazing feeling it was after that I went on oblivion now my only fear is nemesis but because I went on Galactica\air and oblivion...I can do anything
They stoped operations on Charlie And The Chocolate Factory becuase operations weren’t making any money so hopefully they will do some rethemeing then open it back up because if they still have those chimneys up it might come back and they have that temporary wall so you never know
I doubt it'll open again under that theme but I'm sure something will be done with the building soon, it looks awful just sat there

Shawn, you can't be more correct! As a regular visitor to Alton Towers I have noticed a few run down areas of the park. This includes Galactica, which needs a new paint job and Nemesis sub terror. But on the other hand, I love what they are doing to Duel. Great vlog.
I'm going next week for the 1st time in 5 years!! Can't wait to get back on all the rides, especially my favorite - The Smiler!
Alton towers just keeps going down hill all the time operations are horrid wickerman is never running correctly and staff don’t seem to enjoy it and smiler gets worse ever time round

i was here last week for our anniversary and asked a member of staff and he wasnt sure what they had planned for sub terror. i dont get scared on rides however sub terror had me shaking haha brilliant ride even had my husband (he doesnt like rides) loving it! also last week so many people were taking photos on it just as it started. selfies but still photos.

I definitely hope Cedar Point brings back a new dark ride. Doesn't seem right to not have any. I used to ride the Pirate Ride and Disaster Transport over and over back in the day. The Pirate Ride building is actually still there I think between Raptor and Blue Streak so they can use it for something.

When I was there a couple of weeks ago we had one run of the preshow where the curtain was pulled back the entire time and it was all projected onto the head, and then another run like what you had with it all on the curtain, and you get the weird three-head effect. From talking to one of the staff, apparently they'd said to management that they could close the ride for a bit to fix it, then management came over and watched the preshow on just the curtain and said "nope, it's good enough" so it ran like that for the rest of the day! Have they fixed the door from the preshow through to the station yet? That was broken and a staff member was having to manually open it each time.

Great vlog, when I went in April, which was shortly after the ride opened the fire wasn’t on, and this was on a weekend. But in my opinion it is the best ride in the park because of its theming and ride experience

Great vlog, looks like you both had a fun day. Myself and my family have always loved visiting Alton Towers (I first visited in 1992), but the lack of care/funding for general maintenance and operations are really starting to show. I'm not sure what it will take to see the investment come back, but the park is a shadow of it's former self. It's sad to see a once magical place being run into the ground. It's now running on former reputation, and that won't last for much longer. Wicker man was a huge success in my view. I really hope that there are bigger and better things to come, along with better upkeep and staffing levels for the park ,and less emphasis on business models relying on hotel expansions. Who wants to pay to stay if the park isn't worth visiting??

Haha, I was there the day you were there. It was my first time at Alton towers and on any rollercoaster. I was scared before but absolutely loved the day and place. Nemesis was my fav.

Hi Shawn thank you for Alton Towers Vlog. We are going Monday 25th. The website didn't didn't say what time it shuts so thanks for letting us know we are catching the train. I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to do any of the inverted coasters had a bad experience on the Klondike Goldmine at Drayton Manor. My son wants to do smiler. I'm a little worried about him doing it though.
