    I cannot say in so many words how this film affected me....I was born in 1975 and remember watching this film when i 6yo....it drew me into an appreciation for Australia and the mysteries our country holds. The pan flute and the intensity really 'got' to me as a kid, but I continue to try explain the tattoo I have at the base of my neck......."What we see and what we seem, are but a dream......a dream within a dream.

    I love Hanging Rock, I go there as much as possible. I grew up in Geelong and now live in Ballarat - and I first went in the mid 90's in my late teens, I was so obsessed with the film and book then, and have found many of the film sets at the Rock. I might sneak in one night during full moon - that would be haunting!

    Indeed. One of the most beautiful, mysterious movies ever made. It plays like a hot summer day. Peter Weir’s imagery meets Pan’s flute. Each shot is like a painting. Miranda is obsession worthy. This film intoxicates you, then haunts you, with a brilliant ending. It plays like a dream for very good reason.
    It is.

      Hanging Rock, in country Victoria is in itself a haunting, ethereal place, having walked, claimed and scrambled around it. All the time I was somehow expecting to find Miranda. It’s that kind of place.

      Trust me when I say this. Drive towards the mountain, where an amazing optical illusion makes it seem like your car is rolling by it's self up hill. Walk the path to the base of the mountain, with it's finger like rocks pointing like Dreamtime gods reaching to the sky. Climb the winding paths to the top, and walk between the towering rocks, with their strange hollows, hidden paths, and the weird feeling that every one of them is watching you. Stop somewhere at the top amongst the maze of stones and listen. You will not need music. The sound of the wind, the birds, insects, and the hint of tens of thousands of years of indigenous culture pulsing like some too deep to hear heart below you, will both energise you, and make you feel as small as an insect. There is an unfathomable reason why it is a special and sacred place to the indigenous peoples, and a mesmerising magnet to visitors. You won't need music, because the sounds you make right down to the sound of your breathing, become part of the music of the mountain. When you leave, a small part of you remains, and often, your thoughts will return to that place. I hope one day you can enjoy visiting the mountain. Remember my words when you do.

    The answer to the mystery is in the opening scene, where Miranda says that "we are in a dream within a dream" citing a famous poem. Therefore when they vanish, they are simply exiting the matrix and illusion of this world, which is a dream according to many spiritual traditions. I can't believe none of you noticed that except me. If you are a spiritual truth seeker, you are more likely to see these kind of things.

      You are likely thinking of the title sequence. Problem is, the versions used in the movie are not the same as the more familiar version heard elsewhere. In fact, I'm pretty sure the "Ascent" track is different in some versions of the movie, as I remember that haunting pan pipe version when I first saw the movie decades ago. But now it appears with a completely different piano track, that does appear more ominous and suitable for the scene.

    How do you pronounce Gheorghe Zamfir?

    • @sircurtisseretse1331
      @sircurtisseretse1331 Před 7 lety +4

      In Romanian, like in English, a G followed by E or I softens the G. For example, gin or generate. In English, a U is used to keep the G hard, as in rogue or guitar. In French, Italian or Romanian, they keep the G hard with an H. Pronounce the eo in Gheorghe yo. With an English spelling you get GYOR-gay zam-FEER. Stress the syllable in capitals.

      Hmm. Like in "get" and "git?" English rules have so many exceptions I don't really think we even ought to bother calling them rules. It's just "sometimes we do this, sometimes we don't."
