Which is better: the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35, or the Audi S3 saloon? On paper, these two cars - one a sporty coupe and the other a nimble saloon - seem pretty evenly matched! Both get 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged engines, but the CLA has 306hp, as opposed to the S3’s 300! On the other hand, the Audi goes from 0-60mph in 4.7 secs - 0.2 secs faster than the Merc! Love the S3 all day long... it's brilliant & still looks fresh as the day it was released...it is a good six years old now & still looks superb, even better looking than the hatch back version.

@@elleJay-mb4yn Big difference between this and my A3, which my wife has now. My only complaint is the fact that you can't hide the LCD screen while the car is running, unlike my 2016 A3. If that's my biggest gripe, things aren't so bad 😀

The good part with Audi is that you look up to date even with an older model. That is smart design.

I had a S3 saloon 2017 facelift. You have to remember that the interior is from 2012 with just the virtual cockpit added in 2016. It still holds up pretty well now. The new A3 will be unveiled this year.

The CLA's interior reminds me of a kids plastic tiara. It's all so chinsey! It's not particularly the material choice but just the design. I mean just look at the speaker grills

A friend of mine got a cla 35 and honestly, I am in love! It is such a awesome car, I really love the sound and I just really like the Mercedes smell. But I just had been able to drive in a S3 (ok, the hatchback, not the saloon, but anyways) it is really nice, as well!

Just picked up my Magno Gray CLA on Saturday. It's such a head turner. Never thought a compact coupe would get so much attention & compliments.
When you think about it these two are actually both very sensible performance cars. Both have all the power you need and can easily handle everything required by a car. However us car guys.. we ain't so sensible so I'd always got for the 45s or the RS3 if given the choice! Great video as always Matt!

Matt, I love your practical and in depth reviews of all the cars featured on your channel. Great work! My only gripe is there has never been any commentary on the cars reliability after a few years. We all know that most of these amazing German cars end up costing you an arm and a leg when compared to their japanese or Korean rivals over time. Albeit their handling, performance, practicality, and creature comforts are to to die for, however, expect to pay for their not so reliable ownership! Check out the reliability index of JD Power and you will see what I'm talking about. None the less please keep up the good work, the witty commentary, and above all the great cars!...

For me the S3 looks awesome, especially with the black pack. But for the sound I prefer the Mercedes. But I think if you put an aftermarket exhaust like the one from ABT on the Audi it will make the car much better. :)

Nah, its not just because of the 4cyl. A good friend of mine owns a '16 S3, so its the facelifted one already, and it sounds absolutely mad. It has a insanely loud deep grumble, and the exhausts are completely stock. The reason why this sounds so shitty are new EU emission laws which lead to Audi implementing OPF-Filters, I think in 2018, ruining most of their cars exhaust sounds. I guess its the same for Mercedes. A 2L 4cyl can sound really good actually.

Me too, in October. Black Edition. Brilliant car! Exhaust valves only open in Dynamic at startup and above 3000 rpm. Sounds brilliant then especially if you turn down the artificial "Soundaktor" volume by long coding.

This A3 Sedan will remain as a Modern Classic because of it's design. It's like the A4 B5. With Audi you look up to date even with an older model.
Honestly, the Mercedes got better, but I believe the Audi is more reliable, also because it is a Facelift, and it doesn't focus on ambient lights and fancy screens.

The 2016-18 model year S3 actually had 310 bhp however the PPF added in 2019 has reduced the power to 300... And deadened sound. Also 4 exhausts, the clear winner.
Doesn’t make a difference they both do a 0-60 to 4.3
The 2022 and 2023 does a 0-60 in 4.1

for example, I think the iPads stuck to the dashboard of the mercedes are the absolute worst screens ever put in a vehicle, yet people praise them and prefer to hate the pop up screen on the audi for whatever dumb reason.
interior isn't better either, hard plastics fucking everywhere but it somehow wins because it has that dumb looking ledge to it, while audi has soft touch in almost every inch of the car.
Then we have the biggest and weirdest, how the tachometer infotaiment in Audi has always been THE best, but suddenly iDrive is the best, but SUDDENLY the one in the merc is actually the best, then next review of an audi car shows up and its the best again, and so on and so forth... Despite the infotainment in the merc looking worse than the Type R

Mercedes designs seem so dolphin like and not aggressive as German cars really look. But Audi and BMWs still look badass this generation. (previous Benz models looked aggressive).

Well I bought the A35 hatch as I'm not a saloon fan and it's is simply awesome.
Here in the States, the cost of scheduled maintenance and repairs are a consideration. A coworker had leased an Audi, then followed it with a MERC. He said he regretted the MERC because his out-of-pocket expenses were astronomical for the MERC compared to the Audi. At the time, MERC was second to none when it came to the white glove treatment the customer experienced when the car went to the shop, but since then, Audi has really stepped up their game in this area too. I drove VWs and the dealership I used also carried Audi so I also got to see the huge improvement in the customer service experience (though till not the insane level provided by several MERC dealerships in the Dallas, TX area).
I went and listened to "Hey ya by Outkast" after the video 😅.

I own one of the first 2017 S3s sent to the USA and recently upgraded the ECU with APR Stage One. Fast and sticky does not begin to describe how fun this fucker is to drive! -Especially when you stay with Pirelli tires that come stock! Never let a "dealer" put Continental or any other tires on this monster. Keep those Pirelli's aligned and you'll get 30k+out of 'em. Fun car!

Beautiful? As in adding LEDs to distract the driver for realizing his interior is ugly when he turns it off? And having a AMG steering wheel while it's not a proper AMG..
The CLA 35 AMG actually sounds great, but it has to be in Sport + otherwise it sounds like a Passat.
