I've said it a hundred times, but the most damning thing about this era's quality is what we actually end up praising; 'it felt like an adventure!', 'the main characters were integrated into the plot!' and 'the exposition wasn't too boring!' aren't things we'd ever even think of as compliments when usually discussing media

@@CouncilofGeeks Maybe that's the issue. I think the Chibnall idea of Doctor Who is vastly different from RTD and Moffatt.
The Doctor in those series always seemed to be superior regardless of what the plot was. RTD himself said that the Doctor has to be the cleverest in the room. Chibnall almost seemed to have dumbed down all of it but sadly even the plots and the Doctor always seems at a loss, or lost, or unsure...

My impression is that this era's writing generally tends to annoy people more who are writers themselves. No matter if you're a professional or a "hobby" writer, you've been working on your craft and learned from your mistakes. So watching these episodes that constantly run into what feels like beginner's mistakes (setups without pay-offs, stories that don't progress but just sort of happen, etc) is sometimes bewildering, sometimes just frustrating. At least my mind often went during watching "Hang on, wouldn't it be a stronger story if they wrote *this* like *that* and wouldn't the scene work better if the dialogue went this way instead of that way?", followed by "Why did nobody in the writing room catch this??". Either way, I figure that people who tend to be happier with this era are the ones who don't have a bone in this fight, so to speak. But well, who knows. I might just as well talk out of my vortexhole here. ;) It's just a vibeimpressionguessfeeling I'm picking up.

    • @nicka3697
      @nicka3697 Před 2 lety +1

The thing with UK TV is that there is no writers room. There's the writer for the episode and there's a script editor or in the case of New Who the showrunner. Which means if the show runner writes the episode it is just them. So a lot comes down to who the show runner picks to write episodes and how good the show runner is at doing the hundred other things he has to organise and sort to spend time on the scripts. It is why Moffat generally wrote better material during RTDs era when he had that second pair of eyes to look over and refine the script.
I don't really understand why Chibnall could write so much better on Torchwood than he did on Dr Who. I think he felt under too much pressure and maybe didn't have enough people of the right caliber around to help him or didn't know what to delegate and how.

    • @Kaoruishere
      @Kaoruishere Před 2 lety +1

@@nicka3697 Series 11 did indeed have a so-called writer's room, however! I don't know if it stuck around for 12, but for that one at least Chibnall one. At least the PR said so.
Moffat had some really great stories in his time too. It's just that the more episodes you write, the higher the chance that there's a dud or more among them. RTF didn't strike gold with every script during his time either. (And personally, I don't feel Chibnall's work on Torchwood was particularly good either. If anything it was a sign of things to come. Same goes for latter days Broadchurch.)

I got an uneasy feeling at the end of "Twice Upon a Time," when the TARDIS _literally threw out the Doctor_ after she regenerated, and we had all those months of angry fanboys speculating that it must be because the TARDIS hated that she changed genders (which left a transphobic taste in my mouth). I was hoping, first, that we'd get some explanation why in "The Woman who Fell to Earth.."✳ And when that didn't happen, I was hoping for an explanation at the end of "Ghost Monument," and we didn't get one there, either. And that's when I decided that Chibnall put all his skills into action-heavy *plots* and almost nothing into *Story* or character --- action without consequences or reason.
Which is really a shame, because Jodie Whitaker deserved to have a stellar era.
✳My preferred story would have Grace injured, but not killed, so she'd have reason to stay on Earth, and she could be a recurring pull for Ryan and Graham to bond over the fact that they both care for her, she could be a recurring character in the "back home between adventures" episodes, and we could get to meet some of her nursing colleagues (and she'd get a taste of being on the patient side of things). Oh well.

Totally agree with your top episode. After my rewatch of Series 11 I felt that the series as a whole would have been dramatically improved if the final episode was just cut. Ending the season on It Takes You Away would have made her first series feel like a true Doctor Who series focused on adventuring. Seeing Grace at the end was amazing closure and would have made much more sense than another "gun" debate with graham.
Was every episode perfect? No! But the series finale was so awful it takes away from all the fun sense of adventure episodes throughout series 11

I recently rewatched this series myself. For me at least, Ghost Monument came on top. Although how I wish we had more of the weird fella who ran the Rally of Twelve Galaxies, the chap named Ilin. I know Chibs wanted a more standalone format for the series, but I think if he'd expanded the race thing as a series arc/serial that would have been cool. Have the race guy actually allow the Doctor and her friends to join but obviously the Doctor's ulterior motive is to get to her TARDIS. Each episode could be a different planet/challenge, and narratively each challenge could serve as a way to bring certain things out of the characters and flesh them out more. Maybe have a few episodes where it isn't the Doctor who solves the problem, but one of the companions who has an experience/perspective to bring to the problem that the Doctor maybe doesn't.

Honestly, given the finale only had Tim Shaw turn up as the connecting tissue of the series, I kinda feel like maybe having TBORAK be the penultimate episode before ITYA would make more sense narratively and as a finale. Sure, Chibnall didn't directly write ITYA, but I know series 11 had a more of a "writer's room" approach from a recent interview Chibnall had and he himself said this finale suffered because of that along with time constraints, but having the finale be Ryan finally accepting Graham as his grandad as the final moment of the series is much more of an emotional tether than Jodie's speech which wasn't bad, but wasn't really a core part of the series. I also think that being the ending point and then leading into Resolution would be a more natural progression, but I mean ultimately it isn't that big a deal, just a shame the finale is one of the least impactful episodes of the season

I find myself agreeing with your ranking of this series. The only differences being where you state you were debating over specific episodes because I have the same issue myself. I started watching this series when it first aired with so much hope and excitement but about halfway through I just gave up on it and I only made the decision to try again and work my way through this era recently because I wanted to catch up before the 60th specials. As a whole I don’t like this series it would rank bottom overall for me, but there were some great ideas in the episodes. They were just poorly executed. Kerblam would have come top for me IF they hadn’t ruined a great premise with such a poor resolution. The whole series was just meh for me tbh. It’s the poor characterisation of The Doctor and companions that ruins it for me (except perhaps for Graham, I now love him). Having caught up with the show at last I still don’t really understand who The Doctor is in this incarnation. And what little I do understand about her, i don’t really like. And that isn’t Jodie’s fault, it’s just poor writing in my view.

I agree that this is a frustrating series. I think I liked it a little more than you, but I agree with all of your issues. I'll put them in tiers:
    Top tier
    1. It Takes You Away -- the sort of weird Doctor Who can get away with and doesn't do enough.
    2nd tier
    2. Demons of the Punjab - Proper drama with great guest characters and an emotional impact. It's this season's mission statement done right.
    3. The Woman Who Fell To Earth - It looks great and really felt like a breath of fresh air at the time.
    4. The Ghost Monument - I wish it kept up the pace promised by the opening scenes. A little dull but still good overall.
    3rd tier
    5. Kerblam! - If they'd nailed the ending this would have been a solid 2nd place. Leaves a bad taste.
    6. Rosa - Maybe I need to watch this again, but it just felt like uncomfortable territory that Doctor Who was ill-suited to tackle.
    7. The Witchfinders - Like Kerblam! it was ruined by the climax, which was so bad it taints my opinion of the whole episode.
Short jump off a long pier
    8. The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos - It just feels very bland. The psychic waves were created just so Mark Addy could deliver exposition at convenient times. Terrible script.
    9. The Tsuranga Conundrum - This should have been a fun romp, but it was alternately serious and cringe. Bad guest characters and dialogue -- except the guy that dies too early.
    10. Arachnids in the UK - Dull concept w/ a terrible Trump avatar that mentions Trump by name (WHY on both counts). Didn't they have another idea?
I'd probably slot "Resolution" in at #2, though still in tier 2. It was a really interesting take on a Dalek, and my favorite use of them since the RTD era. The only things I didn't like were the microwave scene and feeling like I'd trade every companion for the two archaeologists in a heartbeat.

    8. Kerblam!: Poorly shot with bad practical and cg, but it does have that great energy before crashing at the end
    7. Woman who fell to earth: It establishes its characters decently, and the plot in the first half is intriguing. But it struggles through the back half.
    6. Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos: A perfectly fine standalone episode - I don’t have nearly as many issues as other people. But as a finale, it’s underwhelming.
    5. Rosa: Rosa herself is great, but the scifi plot is meh
    4. It Takes You Away: strong start and end, really don’t like the stuff in the middle
    3. Arachnids in the UK: Passably fun camp (I don’t know what Schlock is, and I haven’t heard what’s up with Chris Noth).
    2. Demons of the Punjab: What Vera said.
    1. Witchfinders: decent human interest story, love the monsters, and I don’t think it fell apart at the end
Overall, I am okay with this season, though it was the weakest start for any of the three show runners.

    It Takes You Away
    Demons of the Punjab
The Woman Who Fell to Earth
    Rosa
    Kerblam
    --huge fucking gap--
    The Tsuranga Conundrum
The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos
    Arachnids in the UK
    The Witchfinders
    The Ghost Monument
I think maybe what puts Ghost Monument at the bottom for me is that it's the point in the series where I lost hope. Woman Who Fell to Earth had problems, but it at least showed promise, and at times, Thirteen still felt like the Doctor. I didn't get that at all in Ghost Monument, and so coming off of an episode that I actually kind of liked and that set my expectations reasonably high, the disappointment probably made it feel worse than it actually was. There's every possibility that it's logically a better episode than several of the others, but that won't change the fact that it was the episode that broke my faith in the series.

After just finishing a rewatch of this series I feel like overall it wasn't a great but here is my ranking
    1. Kerblam! : This was the episode where the doctor clicked for me and it was just fun
    2. The Tsuranga conundrum : With this one I really don't understand the hate it gets and while the pting isn't amazing I don't have a problem with it
    3. It takes you away : Honestly I forgot about this episode but on a rewatch it is actually a fun watch
    4. The Witchfinders : This is the only historical I like this season and it is mainly due to king james
For this ranking and the next two I will admit I don't understand why people think so highly of them when to me while not bad are very forgettable and average at best and the rankings could switch either way
5.Rosa : I don't feel anything towards this episode the bad guy is subpar I don't really think the characters got any great moments and Ryan sending that guy somewhere in time just not great
    6. Demons of the Punjab: Having just finished my rewatch I still couldn't tell you what happened in this episode I also really don't like the beginning when Yaz is first meeting her younger grandma
7.The women who fell to earth: I think its a really weak start, spends way to much time not on the doctor, Tzim-Sha is a weird looking characters while not bad does nothing for me, there is way to many people in the fam I really don't think yaz is needed in this series at all
8.The ghost monument : after such a weak start I was really hoping for a better follow up one of the only good moments in this is between Ryan and graham when they're talking about Grace besides that I think the space race is a wasted idea that could of been really fun and exciting but being dropped in and saved at the very end with a not great supporting cast
    9. The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos: Tzim-Sha is back and it is worst then before the Ux are a very weird race that just does what Tzim wants because he fell from the sky so he has to be god, taking the planets good idea overall meant very little, graham saying he would kill Tzim didn't work for me Tzim showing up with no weapon and no plan is bad too
    10. Arachnids in the UK: I didn't remember how bad this episode was and while I don't care about the political side of this it's not even the worst part, the reasons for the spiders getting big I don't think works that well the killing off of an LGBTQ+ character right at the start just because, the doctor wanting to suffocate the spiders instead of a quicker painless death is wrong when we can clearly see how much pain the spider is in
overall this series was not good I don't really like this doctor and while she does get some good moments the TRADIS is to packed and it feels like Chris really didn't know what to do with any of the characters.
I do know my rankings will upset a lot of people but it people are willing to try and explain at least the two historicals that I clearly don't understand I'll be more then grateful.

I enjoyed Kerblam. They were just too chicken to actually emphasize the point. It was a good depiction of the pointlessness and ruthlessness of warehouse work. I think it would be interesting to switch up the viewing order on the tail end of the series and see if the flow is better that way. Kind of like the different orders you can watch the Star Wars movies in to figure out the story (my brother told me about one that went 4, 2, 3, 5, 6, etc., and skipped 1 entirely that he thought was an insightful way to watch).
Absolutely agree with you on ITYA being the best of the series, followed by Demons of the Punjab. Personally, I didn't find anything overly bad during series 11, but I will also admit to not having rewatched recently, and working off memory and feelings. Given that the end of The Ghost Monument, when the Doctor sees the TARDIS again, makes me cry every time I see that part because Whittaker SELLS the emotions there, I'd keep it very high up there. I also agree with several other commenters that if we skip or move Ranskor av Kolos and go from ITYA to Resolution, it would feel more like a proper ending for the series and completion of that arc for Ryan and Graham.

I have no strong objections to any of them, similarly I have zero interest in rewatching any of them. I do keep a soft spot for The Witchfinders, for that magnificent scene with Alan Cumming. Introducing his period specific sexism to dismiss and antagonise the Doctor. That was the only time (a single scene 😕) Where I saw Jodie as the Doctor.

As for worst, Arachnids in the UK. While there was a lot wrong with the last episode, Arachnids just had them stepping over their morals and most of the time I agreed with the Trump stand in, even if I disagreed with his reasoning, and I doubt that is what they were going for.

  • @vuraxis953
    @vuraxis953 Před 2 lety +1

My ranking isn't gonna have much reasoning to it for a lot of it since I've never been able to bring myself to rewatch more than a couple of Chibnall-era episodes (as the dodgy morals of the 13th Doctor have stacked I've just found her more and more unwelcome onscreen on top of her intended personality really not being for me, plus I can't stand Yaz and especially Ryan), but here goes. Honestly I don't think I actually like any of these episodes properly which is really unfortunate, but at least I liked Fugitive of the Judoon, Haunting of Villa Diodati, Village of the Angels and the first half of Eve of the Daleks from this era, just... that's it.
    1. It Takes You Away - I remember liking it until the frog which crossed my weirdness threshold. I don't like the frog for the same reason I don't like Love and Monsters and Something Borrowed, I get what they're going for but it's just too much for me. Solid episode otherwise though
    2. Demons of the Punjab - I don't enjoy this episode but it's one of those I appreciate a lot more reading a plot summary than watching the whole thing. I have the same opinion on Flux, who's lore changes felt way less offensive when they weren't being delivered through a not-so-great script (and my like for Village of the Angels does illustrate that, since that's actually a pretty good script). The emotional core is a good one, you just have to ignore the clunkiness of the Thijarian 'twist'
    3. Rosa - I remember that I didn't like the villain at all and found it didn't really engage me at all but it had some decent parts and was one of the only times Ryan felt human at all
    4. Kerblam! - it was somewhat of a fun idea and I enjoyed it a little bit I suppose. Morals are embarrassingly executed though as you say, but I don't feel as strongly about them as my bottom spot because it actually has something to it to combat that issue
    5. The Witchfinders - just nothing, a nothing episode which I feel nothing towards
    6. The Woman Who Fell To Earth - the beginning and end with Ryan's vlog are at least decent, I like the Hell Bent-style switcharoo it does, and I like Grace, though I didn't feel anything for her death. Main offence is just being one of the most boring episodes I've seen in a while
    7. The Ghost Monument - this is particularly boring, contrived, feels like filler, and I have no thoughts on it otherwise
    8. The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos - by most measures this is worse than Tsuranga, but at this point I had no expectations so I wasn't surprised it was such a mess and it wasn't as actively painful to watch all the time as my bottom two
    9. The Tsuranga Conundrum - it's another Love and Monsters situation. I get what it's going for but it's too goofy and I cringed the whole way through
    10. Arachnids in the UK - unless In the Forest of the Night ends up being terrible upon my rewatch (and I remember not one thing from it so that's very possible) or Sleep No More is worse than I remember, this is my second worst episode of NuWho or Torchwood behind Orphan 55. Uninteresting, unoriginal and boring idea, Jack is such a stupid one-note caricature here that it's practically an insult to the concept of a character, the story would be sleep-inducing if I wasn't constantly groaning at it, the grime music thing is horribly cringey and not a fitting tone for euthanasia, and 13 here has some of the most painfully botched morals of the era which also drags down the companions to be even less human than they already were since they don't question it
This is easily my least favourite series of any Who I've seen. Even without the execution the ideas are just not really my thing, and after 12 was my favourite Doctor I have not been a fan of this incredibly childish rendition (there's nothing inherently wrong with going for that but it's not for me)

Really sorry to be such a downer, but I went into Series 11 being really hyped for it, and while I didn't hate the series, I found it to be an incredible disappointment in the end. Jodie Whittaker was a good choice for the Doctor, Bradley Walsh's Graham was the best part about it, and there were a handful of episodes I did enjoy, but every week felt like filler and none of it went anywhere. The Thirteenth Doctor's personality was inconsistent throughout with zero character development whatsoever, both Ryan and Yasmin failed to impress as companions for me, the monsters/villains here are one of the worst rogues gallery in the show's history, there was no story arc, and most of the stories we had weren't that great. If we had lots of great individual stories consistently throughout it wouldn't have been so much of a problem, but with zero arc whatsoever and few great stories, this series failed to live up to my high expectations. In fact, despite being bold and risky by introducing a female Doctor, this season wasn't risk-taking at all and was just played far too safe, which, for me, is what the show shouldn't be doing right now. Say what you will about Steven Moffat's run but at least he took risks and taken chances. In the end, this is probably my least favourite season of New Who, as well as one of the worst seasons of the show in general.
My top 11 would go like this:
    1. It Takes You Away
    2. Rosa

Difficult to sort as this is my second least favourite series (behind Flux), but this is my crack at a ranking!
    1: It Takes You Away
One of the most original episodes of DW ever aired.
    2. Kerblam!
Interesting concept to tell the story from the perspective of the grunts of the corrupt organisation instead of going straight to the higher ups, making it feel weirdly grounded for a futuristic setting.
    3. The Woman Who Fell To Earth
Was gripped from the start with the mysterious egg thing, was pleasantly surprised to see the show finally having the guts to kill off one of its main characters and although Tzim Sha turned out to be a pointless villain I did find his last encounter on the crane to be extremely tense.
    4. Rosa
Some very emotional moments in this episode and another tense showdown with the villain, but I felt the Doctor and fam's high energy clashed with the overall tone of the episode.
    5. The Witchfinders
This episode was carried entirely by Alan Cumming's performance.
    6: Tsuranga Conundrum
Slightly over maligned episode in my view, I actually think it captured the dread of being hunted by an alien on an empty ship pretty well. It's just the part where the alien actually shows up that's the problem.
    7: Demons of the Punjab
Very dull and did nothing to inform us of the historical significance of what was happening. It just all kind of... happened, and then the episode was over.
    8: The Ghost Monument
I like the concept here but oh boy was the execution all kinds of awful. Seemed like one long string of plot contrivances.
9: The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos
It's telling that I've forgotten the entirety of its plot besides that weird arc where Gram was trying to kill Tzim Sha, and I hated that arc. It felt like a betrayal to the mindful and compassionate old man he was built up to be until this point.
    10: Arachnids in the UK
Totally uninspired monster design, the villain character litterally did nothing but act like a third wheel to the Doctor's adventuring and shoot a spider that was already past saving anyway, and I remember the origin story behind how the spiders became large was so stupid I almost laughed out loud hearing it.
