as @Ryan Leyba said, the deal here is that this entire construction / show / testing / hotels / event is all paid for by Abu Dhabi. and THEN they also pay UFC a fee for the pleasure of hosting the event. It's essentially a marketing exercise for Abu Dhabi and probably cost 10s of millions of dollars. Long-term they're hoping to generate significant tourism revenue and this will help.

The high level of work done by the Abu Dhabi people is truly amazing and must be given full credit. Dana had a dream, but if in the Abu Dhabi people didn't visualize and carry out the safety, testing and organisation of all the elements in such an epic manner, there wasn't much Dana could do about it. Without so much precautions for Corona, nobody would feel comfortable going there. 💯 for the Abudhabi team👏👏👏👏👏 they're the real heros here, settings standards for the world how to handle events in the Coronavirus environment

I would love to see a documentary or even a movie on the actual construction of the infrastructure as well as what the island looked like before Dana did it up
Not much to show there I guess. Fight Island is actually called Yas Island and is a popular tourist destination outside of Abu Dhabi not far from the airport. There is no need to construct much infrastructure, maybe a small temporary arena. Though there is already an arena. I visited Yas Island in march right before the lockdown. Very Disney Land like location.
It is called Yas Island. There is a lot on the island. Warner Bros fun park, Ferrari World, a big mall, hotels, golf course, residential buildings and more. Quite a nice play to be. It is not like it is a desert island.
J. Algermissen Did he purchase the island or is he renting it with a deal with Abu Dabi? I understand there’s a lot of existing infrastructure but I thought Dana actually purchased the island? Will it be used as usual prior to fight island after corona?
Matt Allerton He did for sure not bought it. I guess atm it’s not used as there is no tourism going in UAE, so Dana likely got a good deal to use some parts exclusively. Keep in mind that this is actually the 4th time the UFC takes place on Yas Island. It is just marketed in a fancy way. And it isn’t really an Island btw.
