Hands down the best live action Riddler. A believable awkward, obsessive nerd turned sociopath that isn't played like a goofball cartoon character.

Jim Carrey's performance was fucking terrible, just like that entire movie was. The complete opposite of everything I just praised about Gotham's version.
Jim (Carrey) was a believable obsessive nerd that got rejected by Bruce. A little over the top, but it worked for the campy era.

No you are describing The Riddler of the first Season and maybe also a bit of the second. That's not how The Riddler is supposed to be. The Riddler is in Season 3. And he's not supposed to be awkward but he's supposed to be a confident person who thinks he's always right. But in Gotham he is rarely outsmarted. But there is no Batman to outsmart him yet which is why his Riddler is a good one. Because in Season 3 he is always confident on TV, and always knows what to do.
They actually made Riddler an endearing, interesting and captivating villain.
He was already interesting and captivating. Endearing, no, but then again, *he's not supposed to be*. He's supposed to be an annoying know-it-all obsessed with being the best and smartest, to the point that most villains don't like working with him. And he's not crazy like the other supervillains. He's not a violent sociopath. In Batman's own words, he's a fanatic narcissist driven by egocentrism, megalomania, and severe obsessive-compulsion. But not a murderer with an overactive and homicidal id.
Yeah I know. Which is why I never really liked him until Gotham made this new take on this character. Could be worse. Could be Jim Carey all over again.

Jim's version is more accurate. Also this version, everyone would know who the Riddler was when he appeared.

Talk about a slow burn, I love how they took the time to develop this character, starting from the quiet nerdy forensic scientist to the multiple personality disorder that ultimately gave birth to the Riddler. This show puts him up there next to the joker in my list of favorite Gotham villains

Robert Gronewold I also think that Jerome is an amazing character and I was sad that he died but he got revived with his face all stapled so i am not convinced he is the joker but one of the cult members worshipping Jerome becomes the real joker.

His last name is foreshadowing of what is to come of him. He was an Enigma all his life. People could not understand him and always left him feeling unappreciated or left out. For someone who felt like an outcast/bullied most of my child hood, although i dont condone murdering people, I do feel for this guy. Lol and for all the bullies out there, be aware that you might awaken a beast.

Edward's disorder started as social anxiety but after he murdered Dougherty it escalated into full blown Dissociative Identity Disorder with narcissistic tendencies. In a way, it IS his coworkers' faults that he wound up like this because they never gave him a chance or offered any friendship. He let his dark side take over; his own insecurities about himself bubbled to the surface with every put down or shut down and fear, doubt, and rage filled him, manifesting into what we would come to know as The Riddler. As someone living with an anxiety disorder, I can recognize a panic attack a mile away. I steered clear of this show after the first season because of the psychological beats that would touch on my thought issues. Negativity is anxiety's fuel, and Nygma, working in a police station as a gifted but underappreciated CSI, was swallowed up by his inner monster. So yeah that kind of crap scares me. And I do pity Edward.
i agree, i also have anxiety and o.c.d., was diagnosed when i was little, and this show illustrates perfectly what its like to have that all happening in your mind.

Damn bro. In a way I agree with you and sympathize with Nygma because a lot of the people he interacted with were dismissive of who he was however you cannot force people to like someone. Even with how he was being treated, it wasn't really that bad. Jim was indifferent towards him and friendly for the most part, Harvey is a dick to everyone so he doesn't really count, The chick he liked clearly did have feelings for him to an extent when he was not being such a creeper, etc. Instead of communicating and improving himself he chose to blame others and hold negative feelings which then lead to him pretty much murdering people.
Nygma's destruction has always been his own as sad as this is. Keep in mind I've only watched season one and I will watch season 2 when it comes out when netflix drops it.

Nygma's spiralling into madness is deliciously entertaining. He starts out as the most precious dork and turns into a complex double personality fun character. He's also tragic and sad. I love him.

The sad thing is that all Ed had to do was work on his phrasing.
"Tom attacked me when I threatened to have him arrested for what he did to you. I had no choice. He would have killed me if I didn't kill him. I panicked afterward. I was afraid nobody would believe me. I made the body disappear. I'm sorry. I just wanted to protect you and I was forced to do something horrible."
He killed a cop. No witnesses. Plus why would he have a knife without at least some intention of using it.
@@Plutomaniaa Like you said, there were no witnesses, and with Gotham in the state it was in, it makes sense to carry something like a pocket knife for self defense. Any forensic investigation would show that Tom had Ed’s blood on his knuckles, possible fabric threads in his hand that indicated a restraining of Ed during the altercation, and how the stabs were made haphazardly, as if Ed were trying to get away from him (if Ed went to the police instead of melting Tom’s body). Worst case, Edward gets a charge of involuntary manslaughter with the likelihood of it being dismissed as self-defense and Edward given mandatory counseling to ensure that this wasn’t the outburst of a more serious condition (although seeing how crooked Gotham was at the time, he might have been charged with worse).
At least pencil is back to its owner !

This character is amazing, Jekyll and Hyde as are basically all the villains in the show but this one captures me most, when his mr Hyde awakens he does everything he can to keep it from ever going near anyone despite what they think of him

I actually love this version of The Riddler. He's actually very cool and sympathetic. I like him.
Nygma is one of my favorite characters on the show. The magnificent actor has embodied an equally brilliant Riddler.
But all these stories I've watched so many times when a tough guy mocks a quiet and meek person on the basis of the idea that nothing threatens him and he can commit violence with impunity.
But these guys are blind, they play Russian roulette and don't understand it. Quiet people are not always weak and meek, but much more often they have total control over their aggression, and they do not allow the negative to come out, and it accumulates, everything is deeply suppressed and when it reaches a critical mass it will simply explode with acts of violence.
Impudent tough guys simply do not understand that they can be a trigger and play with fire, and then they make such surprised faces when they were stabbed 11 times with a knife. What did they expect? If they are blind and do not see the huge dark "shadow" of some people.....So presumptuous.
I know, this is just a show, but in real life it is all around.
