  • This video will show how to remove and replace the gauge cluster bulbs on a 2002 Ford E-150 van. This will work on any Ford Econoline from 1997 to 2007. There will be some minor differences from the 1990's models though. I will show you how to remove the radio as well. I will also show how to access the climate controls for replacement. In this video, I discuss the difference between the stock bulbs that Ford recommends and the bulbs that I install instead. I am in no way responsible for any damage you cause to your own vehicle while attempting this repair, that should be obvious. 🙄 If you have any suggestions or questions just leave them in the comments.
    Thanks for watching!

    What a God send this video excellent video is. I have been fretting over taking my dash off my van for over 8 Months. I put it off, and put its off, out of feat that I did not know where to begin. See, my fan control nob broke, and I could not get any air out. Summer time I dealt with it, because my rear fan button worked so we had A/C. Now it is deeply into Winter, and I cannot defrost my windshield, so I have paper towels to rub it dry while driving.
    Just returned from a 5o mile trip and hit a snowstorm. You want to talk about a harrowing trip. Wow. My wife was almost in tears. Got home, and went to looking for help, and ran across your video. I already order the part, and when it arrives I will fix it, with no worry about removing the panel. Oh, and my radio will be replaced with one I have been wanting to put in also. finally.
    God bless you my brother, you have made my wife a happy and unnervous woman.

    ****Warning**** I did this. Getting the shift indicator plastic piece back into the instrument cluster is nearly impossible. So much so that I was going to have my car towed to the dealer. After fooling with it for a half an hour I finally got it back in. It's hard to get an angle on it going back in. Coming out is easy. Outstanding video above. The 194 bulbs are just too dim. Replacing them with 168's mad them brighter. Same with the 74's on the turn signals. Straightened my shift indicator needle settings out also with the adjustment wheel.

    Light switch knob.
    Actually an easier way to get it out.
    Put your hand up underneath the dash where light switches is. Reach up above the switch. There’s a little button that sticks up, you push down on the button. You can feel it you don’t have to see it, jut push down/button and pull the switch knob out.
    When you pull it out, the lights come on.
    Put the knob back in. Just don’t push hard and not all the way in. Just enough to where you can feel it go in, then headlights go out
its all good.

      If you are talking about the blower resistor it is in the engine bay, mounted on the blower housing behind the battery, no need to mess with the dash for that. The air position selector(ac max, vent,defrost,etc) is actually vacuum actuated not electrically. If your vents got stuck usually on defrost or floor you might have a vacuum leak in that system.

    • @theelectricreality
      @theelectricreality  Pƙed 3 lety

      It could just be the bulb or it could be that there is an issue with the fuel level sending unit. As they age fuel gauge can give some false readings. The fuel light will still come on when the is not reading properly so it might be tied in to another system. Haven't does much research in that area yet so I'm not quite sure what would commonly cause that but I would start by checking out the bulb.

      @@flowrob6861 so from what I know when you get in the van and leave the door open and stick the key in the ignition, the bell alarm will start to let you know that the key is in the ignition with the door open. After you start the engine, if the door is still open, the bell will temporarily pause as the power is cut to most accessories to allow maximum power to go to the starter. After the engine has started, all of the accessories will power back on again and the bell will start again. Once the door is closed, the bell should stop after it completes its cycle. So it might end up ringing a few times even after the door is closed. My van does the same thing too.

      If you have splotchy lighting behind the dash then it probably is just a few bulbs have burned out. If the dash is evenly lit and is just not very bright, twist the light switch counter clockwise and see if it gets brighter. If that doesn't work then there is probably a issue with the resistor for the dash lights.

    Can I used colored lamps instead of clear??..like say, blue or green?.. also if I use LED, how do I get my polarity,.. I’m an electrician btw, so the terminology is not new to me, but not sure how to ring out the polarity on a 12 volt dc system.

    • @theelectricreality
      @theelectricreality  Pƙed 3 lety +5

      With automotive LED lighting, you can plug in the bulb and turn it on. If the polarity is wrong, the bulb will not work. Simply flip the bulb around and then it should work. The bulb will not be damaged despite being plugged in backwards while you try to find the polarity. The only issue with using LEDs in these types of guage clusters is that the light my not shine evenly throughout the display. The Chinese made LEDs will only work for a short time before they start to flicker out. The American or Japanese made ones will last longer but they are way more expensive. I thought about putting LEDs on mine but the high price and short life span with the poor light quality made me decide otherwise.
