My favorite time to be on the water is when the sun peaks over the horizon and, the water begins to reflect tiny flashes of the silver-white sun, I love the way it dances on trees and water. Follow me today for an early morning adventure to meet the "Real Snowbirds of Florida." Florida hosts many migratory birds, we will first visit the Swallowtail Kites in a secret location, joined by my wife and photographer friend, Mark Smith from @MarkSmithphotography and we will experience the Swallowtails in their natural habitat.
This acrobatic bird is undeniable when you look up to see its scissor-like tail against the blue sky. This hidden lake is where we have been photographing and filming the Swallowtail Kites. Hundreds of Swallowtail Kites were up in the trees, and then they would leave their roost to feed, drink water, soar, and then fly away. This is a part of their staging behavior before they make the trip back down to South America. Here in Florida, we don't have seasons except for bird migration season. The Swallowtail kite marks the beginning of summer and hurricane season too. Seeing them all roost together is a magnificent sight.

I hade one of these birds fly over my house a few days ago. I've been living in Florida for almost 23 years and it's the first time I've ever seen one in the wild. Truly beautiful birds to observe.
No bird flies like these. Unparalleled agility in the air. OK, hummers are close too.

In South Carolina, we scout open grass fields for swallowtail kites. This is where we can photograph them diving just above the grass to capture June bugs, and other large insects.

Last Friday 3/10 at 11:00am I saw a flock of about a dozen gliding low almost roof height across my one -level condo in Cala Hills in Ocala FL heading towards Scotts Spring Park. I 've seen one or two a day all week. A friend & I rescue songbirds when they migrate thru the city, birds hit the glass skyscrapers or fall to the cement, most do not survive impact, those that do we get them help.
