- A song about fear, childhood and the changing of seasons, the tender 'Michicant' featured not only the achingly beautiful falsetto of Bon Iver but also a breathtaking sax solo from bassist Michael Lewis. A stunning highlight from their world premiere performances of 'Cercle' at Sydney Opera House as part of Vivid LIVE festival.
Now entering its eighth year, Vivid LIVE is a two-week celebration of ambitious contemporary music at Sydney Opera House and is part of Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas.

Seriously. Fuck that saxophone for giving me all the feels.
Goosebumps everytime.
Man that Saxo guy gave a performance of a lifetime , just wow!
Hell yeah! That's the dude from Happy Apple!
thats michael lewis and he make me pee pee hard
still playing with bon iver
He needs to join Dave Matthew's Band too
Man he really did, didn't he?
Sixth man of the year here
THE WORLD NEEDS THE FULL CONCERT. ♥
André Luiz I second this!! 😣
Uh ...and I will pay for it. Seriously
Yesssss please
I was there and I still want a video of the full concert 😭
@@mayajacobs2180 how many song he sang?
This concert has been one of the most magical and surreal moments I've ever experienced. What a gift to the world this is, for a few moments forget about everything else that's going on in the world, just listen and let go!
So lucky!!! I hope I'll get to experience this magical moment someday😢
never felt such raw euphoria, the entire set gave me goosebumbs, take me back
This is the magic of music; you really are witnessing the essence of life itself when you listen to skillful musicians.
Still thanking Emma in 2016
That was forever ago.
+Christian O'Connell undoubtedly Forever ago for Emma broke Justin/ Bon iver into the main stream light
emma is a state of being
+Homes again I did not say it was a person, just saying that that him finding the sound through Emma is what brought him to a grander audience
+marantz moon nah u're just thankin emma
lets not overlook that god like progression on the drums during the sax solo my god.
Yeah, top notch. That’s a drummer who’s not only good, but can feed off the band. Sign of a seasoned drummer!
Preach. A drummer who knows how to control himself
Right on
That fucking sax section. So transcendent!
This life owe me a Bon Iver concert
They used this song in nine perfect strangers and the moment where the mom and her deceased son both sing “and it wasn’t yet the spring” I lost it. Bawling . Couldn’t describe why but his music hits so different and it’s just the release of emotions it gives. This man is a global treasure
Described it perfectly " this music hits differently", love can hardly leave the room with your heart.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Can u believe he has like 4 different versions of this song!
This is one of the most beautiful pieces of art I have ever heard in my life. What a gift.
Spot on.
If I need uplifting I remember this masterpiece
Time pass but this song ugh still deep im my heart
I have been listening to Bon Iver for years, and I've been contemplating what about them I am so drawn to. In this video, it came to me. Each person in the band doesn't just compose notes, doesn't just add their part to the song. They have come to terms with how they feel in the moment that they are in. Nostalgia makes you feel strongly as you once did in the past, Bon Iver's music allows you to genuinely experience your feelings in the here and now. It may evoke past feelings, but you are feeling them again, right now. So much of life wants you to look to the future or remember the past. When I listen to this music, I am experiencing life in the now.
Well said, I entirely agree
Beautifuly said.
“Nobody says who they are”
why in the hell was this whole performance not uploaded. it must be all recorded and stored somewhere. why is humanity being deprived of such immense beauty.
Good questions
In Justin's falsetto, "Be happy with what you got!"
I dunno man, maybe its because this probably cost the Opera House close to 100k to put this on, and you want it for free.
@@pezushka When did I say I wouldn't be willing to buy it?
@@mattmullen41 "why in the hell was this whole performance not uploaded" CZcams is free last time I checked.
Greatest show I'll ever see. I honestly feel privileged to have been there.
I know the feeling...I'm lucky to be from Wisconsin, and have seen Bon Iver many times....never gets old.
You are privileged. I'm from argentina and i would really love to listen him sing just one time, i really connect with his songs and i find myself and my thoughts only. Thats the power his songs have on me.
You are privileged. And I am envious .
I would 100% buy this as a DVD
Would do anything to have been at that show!!
Is no one going to mentions how amazing the drumming by Matt is in the jam?? WOW
Just mind blowing.
Vernon is a musical genius. Thank you for existing.
Truth!
Home boy on the Sax was playing his heart out. Put his soul into that.
You can't find this stuff on Spotify. No Sir.
This is the most spiritual song I have ever heard. This song, this version in particular, has affected me so much ever since I first heard it. Thank you, Bon Iver, for perfectly translating my inner existential turmoil and pain into music.
Love can hardly leave the room, with your heart...
5:32 is the single greatest moment of my life.
The broke something open in me I didn’t even know was there. Thank you.
The goddamn staves are his goddamn backing band. goddamn.
I might substitute goddess-blessed for goddamn, but I totally feel you and worship what these magical creatures are up to...such as saving my sanity in an impossible world, where Music and Beauty are all that's left to us now...
I agree with the goddamn. It's an unnecessary yet baller flex to have such talent BEHIND you.
I was dead but was brought back to life by that performance my god.
I’m back here, tears streaming down my face. This song encapsulates life. The struggles, the highs, the lows. It’s beautifully poetic
Yeah man, I’ve been coming back here for years. Every now and again I want to remember what this feels like.
Don't forget it's Bon Iver with The Staves - the girls are playing a big part here
Please upload the full set for us who arent fortunate enough to witness this magical performance live, please?
creature fear and michicant were definitely the best imo due to the endings
+Homes 3 of the videos posted were bloody amazing, but I cant help myself I want to see their performance of Holocene or Skinny Love too!! :D
yeh i went there, skinny love, holocene, blood bank, and the three uploaded were the best for sure
Went to a festival... I was tired and all because most of the artists that went were nearly all party types. Bon Iver came before Death Cab for Cutie... Bon Iver shook the stage. Everyone was in a standstill. Watching him live is a must... Everything is too chill and intense. Go front stage if you get the chance!
He was 85% the reason I went there.
Renzo Gil Bien Wanderland !
Pure, unadulterated escapism.
Is this what dying feels like? Almost a transition into a peaceful eternity...
Stepping off your last breath into a warm ocean of angels..
I never realized how many more things I had to say to you until I couldn’t. Moments full of regret-memories and emotions that take me up and down. I wasn’t always the best, but you met me where I was then, and you loved me anyway. Thank you. There are days I remember us…sometimes I smile. That night you took my hand and danced slowly with me; I felt so loved by you. Always yours, RIP AAS, 072921.
“I believe death is only a door. When it closes, another opens. If I care to imagine heaven, I would imagine a door opening, and behind it, I will find you there waiting for me.” ― Sonmi 451, Cloud Atlas
I don’t know you, but I feel it too. ❤️ RIP
“With your heart”
gets me every time!
I enter another world at that point; every time.
What is this feeling i'm feeling? can anyone describe it to me? It's something in between misery and euphoria? I want to feel it forever...
Agreed.
When you connect with sounds that describe how you feel even your intimate self then you need to embrace them.
You're so right...I find all his work like that.
Pure unadulterated angst.
It's called melancholy :)
Lyrics:
I was unafraid, I was a boy, I was a tender age
Melic in the naked, knew a lake and drew the lofts for the page
Hurdle all the waitings up, know it wasn't wedded love, why?
Four long minutes in and it was over, it'd all be back
And the frost took up the eyes
Pressed against the pane
Could see the veins and there was poison out
Resting in a raze, the inner claims I hadn't breadth to shake
Searching for an inner clout, may not take another bout, why?
Honey in the hale could fill the pales of loving less with vain
Hon', it wasn't yet the spring
Aiming and it sunk and we were drunk and we had fleshed it out
Nose up in the globes, you never know if you are passing out
No, it wasn't maiden-up, the falling or the faded luck, why?
Hung up in the ivory, both were climbing for a finer cause
Love can hardly leave the room
With your heart
3:27 “With your heart” So delicately sung 😍
Drummer went on a freaking bender at the end!! Amazing
When the sax drops at 5:32 omg, I didn’t know I could feel this much
Absolutely beautiful, Bon Iver has been the sole motivation for starting and grinding out various musical skills in the last year. How anyone can hear this and not want to be a part of making the magic happen, escapes me.
I wanna feel this song everyday, for the rest of my days and beyond
It’s the “with your heart” that truly hits me! Wow stunning
Instant regret for not buying tickets
Gosh This Sydney Opera House and the NPR Full concert have been my daily playlist for years. I would love to be able to buy them as an album. The Staves and Bon Iver are chef's Kiss!
This may very well be the most powerful piece of live music on the planet. The last 3 minutes. Dear god. The drums and Mike Lewis on that sax. Justin screams a few times it's so good.
everytime i watch this i am brought to such a safe & strong sob
Genuinely never seen a bunch of musicians blend so well .... ever !
This song is someone saying goodbye to his family and exiting this earth, only the beauty of this song could describe the process of the beauty of passing on. R.I.P
Andy Wilkerson, we both enjoyed this song so much together..
Dat bow on the vibraphone! Real pretty.
If any one of us had any idea that this concert would be anything as ethereal as it is, Sydney would have seen a lot of incoming tourists that day simply for Bon Iver.
Stunning, absolutely stunning.
I’ll never forgive myself for not knowing them back then 🤦🏻♂️
I was at this concert and I honestly still dream about it! Never has a concert impacted my life like this one did
I arrived here not looking for it. I have listened twice--no, three times. I have been transported, have cried, and have shared this with others. Sublime.
Thank you nine perfect strangers…
That sax solo tho...out of this world!
Tonight, me and my partner was meant to be in Amsterdam to see the beautiful Bon Iver but due to the virus is been held off until next January 2021.
So we have made a lovely dinner, beers, wine and have got on their playlist throughout the night.
See you next year! We can’t wait 😊
We can't wait to welcome you guys here in amsterdam again! Hope you enjoy the trip next year :)
Reading your comment has me feeling a little down for you. I really hope you get the opportunity to see BI this year.
Outside of Jazz, I bet there’s not a lot of professional music where a Sax play can jam out like this. Love it!
Jazz is a little bit like an ivory tower, nowadays. Jazz has forgotten to look into
it`s future. This is the best context for that saxophone player. The music is a
light which shines on him. And he is simply wonderful!
@@horstwollaeger3852 That's not true in the UK...
I don`t doubt what you say. UK is a vivid place. But here in Germany many Jazz-musicians look down to composed music. They call everything `` Pop`` which has a structure. They don`t understand how hard it is to
write a good chord progression or a good melody. It is a good news when
you say it`s different in UK. Greetings from Cologne. @@guitarteachers

I never can figure out Justin's lyrics and I always still love them.
@@michaelm210
Hey Michael, I understand, I really do. For me its much easier to get his lyrics without listening with music,
at least at first. I read somewhere that Vernon creates a melody first and then fits the lyrics to the rhythm.
Don't know if I believe that or not because it seems to be the opposite to me at least.
I've rarely read such beautiful and powerful poetry. But then the music is so often a kind of poetry of it's own.
Leonard Cohen can come close to those levels on occasion. His lyrics can paint a rich mosaic but its almost
like he writes with a consideration for a limited listener's ability to "get" the meaning. Whereas Vernon just seems
cut himself open and let the words fall as they lay, or lay as they fall. I've never been an "album buyer" because
I look at each song as a separate work that clicks or doesn't. I've had many clicks with Bon Iver. More than any
artist in recent memory.
@@michaelm210 Bob Dylan said its more about the feeling or vibe than making sense >
Must have watched this hundreds of times now and it still gives me goosebumps when the saxophonist goes for gold at the end
Right? That passion..... if i would wear longe sleeves they would be pinched by my goosebumps....
It's pretty sick.
Videographer did a beautiful job capturing your guys magical talents
My 1 goal in life is to see this performance live with my kids.
The alto sax performance created world peace without knowing it!
When people respect their work and are passionate about it, this is the outcome! God, I'm blessed!!!
Defo my favorite Bon Iver track. This stripped back version sounds really cool too; the sax solo is nothing short of amazing!
I love how they re-used this saxophone solo in Sh'Diah
that sax killed me.
I want a tattoo of this video.
My South African brudda!
hahahaha
Did you do it?? We want to see!
No truer words have been said 🤣
Mindblown
The saxophone performance gives me the chills every time
Bon Iver + Ben Howard
That's my playlist!
I'd be the happiest man on earth if they made a song together.
Oh yessss, you couldn't say better!!
Still don’t know why they haven’t gotten together
+ keaton henson and more staves
How inspiring is it that these guys play shows year after year and still play with this much passion.
And the award for the best sax player in the world goes to.....
One of the best pieces of music ever composed..R.I.P. Andy Wilkerson I miss you bro..
The saxophone guy is dope ... love his playing!
I was so lucky to be able to sit in this concert hall listening to this amazing group of people. It was surreal, magical, raw and beautiful. Definitely shed a tear or too.
Such an artful drummer
Need Full concert! amazing
I would literally cry if I was there in person
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
One of the best performances I have ever seen. Ever.
I was there in the front row. I basically cried from the first note played to the last sound that rang through the Opera House. It was life changing 💝
man, that saxophone was superb!
I was going to go to this live, Justin has been an idol of mine for so long. His music has helped me to feel again when I didn't feel like I could and I feel such a deep connection with it. I was on the bus home one night and I decided to look up his name and when it said he was performing in Sydney only a few days from then I was so excited, he was actually coming to Australia, this was my chance. I was going to book a ticket but life and my own petty excuses got in the way and before I knew it my chance was gone. I've never, ever regretted something in my life so much. Please come back to Australia again soon Justin. I need to see you live, I need too. Otherwise I will take the pain and regret to my grave.
Lifes short, why wait for what may never happen. If you can, jump on a plane and go to them. If you can't. then make it so you can. Done it before for other artists and never regretted it.
Justaperson this makes me so sad
Ahhh man I feel you. “ life and my own petty excuses “ I choose addiction over going and have so much regret for it
Jordan Santone you’re not alone man, I did the same thing recently with a Conor Oberst show and regret it though not at all on the same scale as I would regret missing a Bon Iver show. Be strong, my friend!
Never seen anyone sing with a sax. Perfection.
BEST SAXOPHONE SOLO IVE EVER SEEN. EVER.
This song... never felt more understood in my life
I feel like I come back to this vid every few months as therapy.
a remedy to my broken heart
To see Bon Iver live in concert is just.... beautiful.
Just saw Bon Iver on April 3, 2022 and THEY BLEW MY F--KING MIND!!!!!!
The bow played on the vibraphone or marimba (can’t quite tell) at the start of the song is simply stunningly haunting.
I love the album version,...but this is just spectacular. I cant stop listening to it. I can feel the raw emotion oozing from my computer screen.
I felt the same! Like a wave.
Still Thanking the log cabin, the state of Wisconsin, and for Emma long ago in 2019!
Hands down one of the most free-range soul searching musical landscape of this era.
One of the Greatest song of all time
Love can hardly leave the room, with your heart!
i love the way he says with your heart
"Set free the full concert of this musical genius and let his iconic masterpiece reverberate through generations. Unveil every facet of his unparalleled artistry. It's a precious gem that must be cherished and celebrated. We implore you to honor his greatness. Thank you for sharing this extraordinary legacy with the world" chatgpt
We have been begging for this for a long time
I just can't express words for how good this performance is. The sax solo, the drumming, his voice. Just mind blowing.
this is what perfection sounds like.
What beauty!
Please upload this whole performance. It’s one in a decade 🙏
this is one of the best musical performances I've ever encountered.
Now I am sure that god exists, this guy is super human and has divine creative forces flowing in his veins. Amazing.
3:35 is where my mind drifts far away even more
That was a captivating heart-felt trip I got myself on. Was just utterly transfixed so solemnly as I kept wiping away warm tears from my face. Almost wished the magic being performed never ended.
that sax... sparks, butterflies, magic all over!
Good Lord this is beautiful! That saxophone!
