- A script for THE ILLUSIONIST was originally written by French comedy genius and cinema legend Jacques Tati as a love letter from a father to his daughter, but never produced. Sylvain Chomet, the Oscar-nominated and critically acclaimed creator of The Triplets of Belleville, adapted the script and brought it to life in his distinctive hand-drawn animated style.
The Illusionist is one of a dying breed of stage entertainers. With emerging rock stars stealing his thunder in the late 1950s, he is forced to accept increasingly obscure assignments in fringe theatres, at garden parties and in bars and cafés. Then, while performing in a village pub off the west coast of Scotland, he encounters Alice, an innocent young girl, who will change his life forever.
Watching his performance for the excited villagers who are celebrating the arrival of electricity on their remote island, Alice is awestruck by his show and believes his tricks are real magic. Though they don‟t speak the same language, the two lonely strangers quickly bond through small kindnesses. Fascinated by The Illusionist, Alice stows away on his departing ship and follows him to Edinburgh. There, they quickly fall into a father -- daughter relationship, with Alice keeping their home at a boarding house for vaudevillians, while he goes to work in a small local theatre.

Enchanted by her enthusiasm for his act, The Illusionist rewards Alice with increasingly lavish gifts he has 'conjured' into existence. Desperate not to disappoint her, he cannot bring himself to reveal that magic does not exist and that he‟s driving himself to ruin working all night jobs to buy her gifts.
As The Illusionist grows older, Alice grows up. She falls in love with a young man and is no longer so enchanted by The Illusionist‟s conjuring. She moves on with her life, and The Illusionist no longer has to pretend. Untangled from his own web of deceit, he resumes his life as a much wiser man.
I love this film so much. It has a charm that is lost in popular mainstream art. This... THIS is art.
B. Garcia tax payer money wemt to a Boulder in California
Has anything changed in five years?
@@nickbarnes97 I love the ferocious rabbit
Are you bent?
As a painter I can verify, it’s ART!
The only thing I did not like about this movie is how misleading the trailer was. The trailer looks lighthearted and optimistic, while the movie is actually extremely melancholic and very deeply depressing.
Yet exactly this capability to touch the deepest parts of the beholder's soul is what defines one masterpiece as such. And yes - this movie is a masterpiece.
One of those that is but isn’t a happy movie
Yeaaa I thought the same... broke my heart out of nowhere
Unfortunately, sometimes you have to trick people to get them to eat their vegetables.
Illusion
This is an extraordinary movie. I watched it to the end on Sunday. So few words and such a poignant message alone its journey. The animation is beautiful and I am stunned that I never saw this movie before. I can only imagine the thousands and even millions of hours it took to bring it to this high level. If magicians did not exist we would never have this movie, so glad they do!
One of the movies I come back to when I'm in a wistful sad mood and want something artful and beautiful to express that.
Watch this If you want to be sad for a week thinking about it.
+Eric Cartman Thank you for the heads up, life = saved
Eric Cartman is that you?
Ethan Mueller the real cartman would not have warned people about a movie being harrowing haha
+Sean Carter so he's a fake-a.
+Ethan Mueller defo! caught in the act too
After a decade I rewatched it just now and yes it's emotionally rich. It never gets old.
I love how non of the characters here look the same. As in, it doesn't have same face syndrome. Even the extras.
I’ve gone to a couple of local events with amateur writers who love filmmaking. The question is always “what’s something you currently watched that you adore?” And every time my answer is this one. ❤
Such a underated movie. I LOVED IT
This movie was so goddamn depressing. Don't get me wrong, it's a good movie, it's just so sad.
watched jessica jones whole 2 seasons, a very good show but somehow it's just so depressing.
I know.. but still so goddamn good, depressing good :)
Absolutely loved The Triplets Of Belleville, mad I barley found out about this.
I watched this 10 years ago, when I was 15. It was soo soo cold that I still come back to it just to see the agony of the illusionist for losing the girl. That man is so lonely it still kills my heart
I loved this man's rabbit. It wasn't even a main part of the movie but I just wanted to come here to express it. It's animated really well and I loved its character. And then the end of the movie happened. :(
Just thinking about the ending to this wonderful film is enough to make me tear up.
My wife and I watched this today, a BEAUTIFULLY animated film. The animation conveyed everything, very little dialogue, it was stunning detailed movie that made you feel like you were at the locations and settings as much as any real life movie could. Very enjoyable, a nice piece of artwork.
Tonight I watched this movie for the third time and still managed to notice new things I'd never noticed before. I really adore this movie - every frame is so beautiful, many themes and character lines being followed throughout, little comedy here and there. It's one of my favourites. Chomet did a great job with this one!
I absolutely loved this movie.
Yes, it's not all butterflies and rainbows. But, it has got Heart.
A masterpiece. Such a gorgeous film, and a valentine to Scotland too.
Chomet's style is just so beautiful and amazing.
For some reason at 3am I was thinking about animated films and I remembered this one but forgot the name. I knew it was something short with “The” at the beginning and had to google top animated films. I came across The Triplets Of Belleville and for some reason I knew the animation of that film seemed familiar with this one. Luckily with the algorithm I watched the trailer for that film and lo and behold this one came up! Omg I haven’t watched this film in 14 years, I know I have it in dvd somewhere lost in my house but I need to watch this again…I just remember it being sad but at the same time it was something that I resonated with…I miss animated films like this one ❤
I simply adored the 2006 "The Illusionist"
Just discovered this one!!!!
a fucking masterpiece.
Beautiful movie and one of the most emotionally touching I’ve ever seen but I can’t help thinking this trailer could be 100 times better if it represented that rather than just bunching a load of clips
This film is absolutely amazing. I can't recommend it enough.
This movie is high art. Very depressing, yet still love it.
Don't watch this if you're sad even a bit. The ending is quite depressing even if it's about moving on.
How nice! This movie is so beautiful!!! ^^ I wish everyone saw the beauty of this kind of movies...
I can't comprehend how I was able to watch this film multiple times at the age of only 9
Just realized they quote The Onion at 0:53, but then again the quote isn't wrong as it is indeed one beautiful movie!
I watch this every spring to remind me of new beginnings :)
One of the greatest magic movies ever made.
I hope Chomet is bringing out a new movie in 2017, I would really love to see it. I've watched this movie and I watched the short film about the guy who dresses up as a pigeon (can't think of the name right now). The style of the background are magical and every movie brings you a new interesting idea.
Our animation teacher is taking us to see this tomorrow
This film was wonderful! Even though the characters barely talked, I LOVED watching them develop through their actions and not words. Almost nothing was said through the entire thing, and that's what made it so great! The first half of the film was traveling and it felt so VERY refreshing to see hand-drawn animation. I cried at the end, it was funny in the beginning but depressing towards the end. At first I didn't think I'd even like it, but I ended up enjoying the film immensely!
=)
Beautiful film.
I have never even seen this movie. Even getting to know this is a 2D animated film made in the year, 2010, ten years ago, I got to watch this.
This lost to Toy Story 3 for best animated feature. Build a bunker and stock up on ammo; civilization is in decline.
yup I just started digging
the Academy doesn't give a crap about 2D animation, today
Don't hitch your animation to a depressing wagon, or you will never win, no matter how stunning your animation may be.
+Bradley Williams hey man, Toy Story 3 was tight in my book. Granted, i didnt see Illusionist, but still, dont be mad, brah
Yeah,well... the americans should always win, right?!RIGHT?!
This is fantastic, wonderful artwork and animation!
Amazing movie. I was wrong when I thought traditional animation was dead.
How come I never heard about it...
This should alone have sweeped the OSCARS!
Absolutely beautiful
Beautiful film, loved it
loved this film!
What a charming trailer! It is beautifully animated. :)
Need to watch this movie. It looks very promising.
Such an underrated movie.
One of best film ever
This film is amazing... I loved every second of it. :)
Looks brilliant!!! Hope I can have the chance to see it soon!
I saw Derren Brown mention it on facebook; must be worth a watch.
Tati lives on.
This was very well done! However, now that I've just finished watching it, I feel like shooting myself in the head.
Feel the same here, they probably should have mentioned somewhere it's not for children. It shows people's lives being ruined and suicide attempts.
If someone told me how sad this movie would be I don't think I would have watched it.
Holy @#$%, man. :(
+darkknight07100 It is sad, but have you seen Grave of the Fireflies? It's probably the saddest movie I've ever seen.
Loved this movie so much, it's my favourite animated film & as much as I enjoyed Toy Story 3 I still think this should have won best animation at the oscars that year. The animation was beautiful & the story very moving & at times very funny, plus being Scottish it was nice to see the film almost entirely set in Edinburgh. It reminded me a lot of Charlie Chaplins movies.
My fav forever
Loved the feature
the best line ever..
a wonderful movie
The animation is art. :)
Damn how did I miss this
One of the saddest movies I've ever seen, and brilliant.
This art style is so damn good!
I cried when I saw it at the movie.
This is Studio Ghibli Animation quality!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ahh I watched the end of this movie, but never got to watch the beginning and I cant find find it on TV anymore AHH
it's on youtube
so much more sincere and not pandering toward the crowds like that other french silent movie thats getting all the accolades now.
Can someone recommended more 2d animated movies like this one
The Rabbi's Cat
Brilliant animation, extraordinary story line, i cant wait to see this on the big screen, its like bringing back the old days where magic was the most famous entertainment, unlike today... tv, video games, and God knows what else
How are you after 11 years?
@@alexandrelobo8524 How are you after 5 months?
@@dishuuu112 after losing my daughter I can say to you that I’m a completely diferente person. Enjoy life whit the ones you love. Regards
@@alexandrelobo8524 oh no I am so sorry. Please take care of yourself and remember good times are on their way. I love you and have a great day/night ❤️
only reason I heard about this was the V&A in Dundee
Ok, I'm sad that this isn't that popular,,,
This movie made me cry….
Me, too! Seeing that puppet for "free" at the end did it for me.
I read the synopsis and it sounds like the type of story I would enjoy. I too am planning to see it soon. I did see "The Triplets of Belleville" and I enjoyed that so I am expecting that this will be enjoyable as well. I like the style of animation, it's different, not necessarily "much better" than what Disney has done, just different.
this style reminds me of 101 dalmatians, but with intense detail.
one of the ratings is from The Onion...
Ah yes, I shall seek this movie, and hope it is as joyful as the trailer. But first, I must watch Death Parade and School Live.
What did you think of the film having watched it?
Anyone played the Professor Layton games? This style reminds me so much of that, very nostalgic!
I see. I shan't argue no more.
Really recommend this film. Only warning is that it's depressing in the end
This was extremely depressing and beyond hard to watch. I had red eyes when the film ended and had a bit of a breakdown. The story hits too hard and shows how time changes the simplest things. Expectations of life evolve and life goes grey.
This movie is so great. The story is so simple but sweet
Does anyone know the name of the song in the trailer?
8 dislikes?? That's impossible!
i would wote for toy story too since its made for general audience.
this is a movie i would keep for myself.
Best Animated Movie Ever Made?
@RobotMice Have you seen "watership down" yet you might like it its beautifully painted and a really good film. I think im gonna watch this later it looks allright.
Does anyone know where can i watch the full movie?
Both deserved their own oscar, Toy Story makes billion people cry during the epic moments the ending also very unpredictable. This movie is good too, the drawings, the music, the endings. Both deserved to win. So please don't compare these 2 master piece anymore, because you make me don't believe in humanity even more.
can't find this for love nor money on blu ray in the uk
Where can I stream this?
❤❤❤
かわいいなあ!めろめろになってしまうわ・・・・
@ChrysLT Nope I meant that I totally love this style ^^
@gethsemeny
faster than the eye, that's magic!
A lot of people would ask the same thing about this movie, not that it isn't but they would, anyway. Regardless, I think both this and the Toy Story movies are masterpieces. Making comparison between them won't do either any justice.
European animation is magical
something about this animation kinda reminds me of old winsor mckay animations
whats the name of the song playing?
i love this movie!
@gethsemeny Really? I think the cuts are fine
Is this ever gonna be on itnues?
