Don’t forget their big brothers, the RH 545s. Real beasts. I have some RH544s. Very nice sounding, a little soft but that’s where a recap might help. There’s a lot of technology in them, the same engineers help design CDs so there were no mugs

Yes, lots of tech in them for sure! Probably a bit ahead of their time.

I have a pair of the speakers. Bought from Philips directly, here in Australia back in 1978. As you have stated the bass response is second to none. To me a gorgeous sound that other amp's/speakers cannot compete with. I would hard pressed to want to sell them.

lol, yes - the bass is pretty amazing with them. Tight, tight, tight! Very punchy!

    Really nice video!
You made a little mistake however. This speaker is a threeway design. The device mounted in front of the woofer is not the accelerometer but a tweeter.
Otherwise very interesting and well made video, thank you!

    • @1JGP1
      @1JGP1  Před 10 měsíci +3

You are right - it is a three-way, that's a tweeter. There is a piezo-electric accelerometer, but it's actually mounted under the dust cap of the woofer...realized that well after I made the video. Good catch!

Philips tweeters were used on the quadraflex speakers back in the 70s I really liked them!

Setting the channel on the speaker is used to connect several of these speakers in series, for bars, studios etc.

Canadian Guru,I found a pair of these on C/L (in Seattle) Good both functionally and cosmetically, for $300.00 USD. The very reason I'm watching this...Back in the late 80's, I bought the very same PHILIPS stack that you have...with DALQUIST DQ-10's and some 12" subs...It ROCKED!, Unfortunately,it was all stolen in 1990.All this stuff is hard to find...

The larger MFB Speakers are even more impressive, the Philips 545 for example.
I own the Jamo MFB 100 and MFB 200 speakers, they were built in collaboration with Philips, you can even use them with preamplifiers or integrated amplifiers. The Jamos have 200W of power per box, with 3 separate amplifiers for the drivers, but otherwise lots of those Philips ingredients. The bass is multi-layered, really clean up to 20 Hz, you don't need a subwoofer. The Jamos have silk tweeters from Seas, which the Philips unfortunately don't have, the Philips tweeters are a bit harsh and imprecise. The bass speaker and also these great midrange speakers come from Philips, as here. They sound like really good large floorstanders with a sub. The MFB Bass has a special sound, even on lower volume.

Thanks for sharing! I agree with the midrange and low end on the Philips - it's a bit of a surprise when you first hear them!

I have yet to hear the whole video. Just seeing the innards and the construction (with some sort of accelerometer in front of the woofer?) is already very interesting, i liked and subscribed. Thanks

Good video. I am into the electronics, the circuits, in general. I have a suggestion for you, as a collector of unique pieces: get a Sony VFET amplifier! These are absolutely unique, because there are no other output devices that are comparable to the Sony VFETs. Not even power JFETs, SITs, or VFETs from other manufacturers. I would get a 5650 and have a very good tech work on the amp to get extended life. The amp as it comes from the factory is prone to a failure which often causes the death of the VFET output devices, even though they are not prone to failure themselves (the VFETs). These devices are now extremely hard to find.

Thanks! Yes, they are very interesting - it is a accelerometer, you are correct! Welcome!

    • @1JGP1

It's actually a sensor - crazy as that sounds...it measures the positioning of the woofer.

Can never understand why people spell PHILIPS wrongly, when the hardware's featured in the video-clip!! This is aimed at some of the comment makers, not the creator of the video. PHILIPS had great, great hardware, but to my mind NEVER marketed their high-end products, across ALL product-divisions, aggressively enough!! Wonderful product range with advanced technologies and hardware design/aesthetics!

Not sure i understood the rca ins and outs. A simple source like say my phone goes into the right and left of each spkr and you correspond the push buttons as such but why do they have left and right on each one. I honestly would live seeing a video on just the rca connecting coz it's weird

It seems you didn't do very much research before you started pontificating here. The large domes at the upper portion of the face are MIDRANGE drivers, NOT tweeters. The dome tweeters are the items that you misidentified as "piezoelectric accelerometers" - those are tweeters, my friend. The motion feedback components are built into the woofer. Really before you start trying to give us a history lecture, it would improve your content if you actually knew what you were talking about.

In the mid to late 70s, my father owned a pair of 3way speakers made by Philips, utilising the same tweeter that is mounted in front of the woofer on these powered speakers.
Would you happen to know the serial number or model number of that tweeter?
