  • On a bright, ordinary day in the city a woman walks alone to the train station. As she descends the stairs to the underground platform she smiles at a young man. He smiles back. With the smallest of gestures, the woman is caught in a subtle and sinister game.

When I went to college, my sister made me a list of the top ten rules of traveling as a woman in a big city:
    1. Never, ever, walk alone.
    2. Try and always be in a group with at least one physically strong male.
    3. Carry pepper spray/a knife/a gun/taser/other self defense items where allowed.
    4. Choose aisle seats instead of window seats so you don’t box yourself in.
    5. Don’t smile at or talk to men you don’t know. It’s better to be rude than assaulted.
    6. Don’t ever accept an offer of food or drinks from men you don’t know.
    7. If a man grabs you, do not hold back. Scream, kick, writhe, bite, pull hair, scratch, anything.
    8. If someone demands you give them your wallet/phone/valuables and they are armed, don’t argue, just give it to them.
    9. Always tell someone where you are and where you’re going when traveling alone.
    10. Remember: Self-Defense laws exist for a reason. If only one person can make it out of an altercation, make sure it’s you under any circumstances.
    Stay safe out there, ladies.

I don't mean to be rude but some of these rules are pretty awful. The first one is impossible, what, you'll never walk alone- ever? It's not feasible. If you do that regularly, one day you will have to walk alone and it will way more difficult.
As for resisting when a man grabs you...that really, really depends on the situation. If he is much bigger than you then this is precisely how you will get yourself either severely hurt or possibly even dead. There's a reason why women's organizations that deal with rape advise women to stop struggling if, again, the man is far too large and/or armed. Because if you struggle, the odds of his killing you sky-rocket.
Do scream, if there are people around but fighting can end so badly that I honestly don't think it's worth even considering. Unless you find yourself fighting for your life, at which point you can only, well, fight.

      @@mrunalvinodbhalerao2829
Well, first of all, you KNOW what they meant by "sixth sense". But, the whole "18 senses" thing is complete garbage, and most of them are just different variations of our other FIVE basic senses, most of them being feel/touch. Things like itch, pain, pressure, thermoception, etc... (which are all listed in there) ALL relate back to feel/touch. Thirsty and hungry are also listed in there. You FEEL hungry or thirsty, it's not an additional sense. Even our equilibrioception is listed in there, which is just our equilibrium, that helps maintain our balance, and sense/FEEL gravity. But this is also NOT an additional sense, because it goes right back to feel/touch.
There are also many other sources that say we have 20, 30, 50, and even over 100 senses. We have five basic senses, that's all. Most of the others listed are just the same things, only in a slightly different manner.
I mean no disrespect, I just disagree, especially when there are several different outcomes on the same subject, and there is no ACTUAL solid based studies, or answers.

Something very much like this happened to me once, but not a bus. I was going from London to Cambridge for summer school and at some point during the trip these two tall guys, skinhead-looking guys see me across the aisle and sit next to me. They proceed to ask where I am going, immediately clock me as a foreigner, and invite me to a party.
I politely declined them, as I already had further engagements (and there was absolutely no way I was going with two random guys to a party, I don't even like parties, let alone those hosted by guys I do not know and look shady af) but they kept insisting.
At this point, I am stuck on a longish bus ride and can't get out. There are very few stops along the way and even if I get out of bus and find some other means of getting to my destination, I would arrive after the dorms are closed and thus would have no place to stay. Perhaps I could find a hotel but I'd have to look around, at night.
So basically I can't escape them. If I were to change seats they might follow or even get offended and escalate the situation further. Short of telling the driver and causing a ruckus, there was nothing to do but hope they would get tired and leave me alone.
Fortunately their stop came before mine. I watched them exit the bus with immense relief. They had no information on me, no name and no way of tracking me down in Cambridge so I was off the hook...until the next bunch of creeps comes, that is, because there is always one around the corner.
It is a horrible situation to be in.

Nocturnalux That must have been very distressing. I used to hate using public transport as a teenager to go to and from school. I was assaulted 4 times by random dudes on trains or in the city as a teenager. When I was 12 , some guy who was about 30 just walked up to me and punched me in the stomach for no reason. He just walked off. I lay on the ground totally unable to breathe. No body did anything to help me.
I’ve had a guy with about 6 mates throw a bottle at me as I rode past on my push bike, 2 guys attack me as I stepped off a bus, a couple of thugs bashed me on a train when I was 16.
I was bashed when I was 22 after some drunk in a car ran into my motorcycle. His girlfriend goaded him into it. He had 2 mates with him, of course. This prompted me to learn MMA.
Even after 15 years of training, people still occasionally act up. I had some dickhead try to start a fight with me in Surry Hills while I was having a drink with a female workmate. Another fuchtard tried to push me down some stairs at the Australian Open because he thought I was moving too slow. Didn’t end well for him. I had an unknown woman run up behind me one night in Newtown and tried to smash a bottle over my head. She got put down quickly, but all these people were going on about “hey! This dude just assaulted a woman!” Some other people had witnessed it and set them straight.
Females think that men have it easy when it comes to city life. I hear to soooo often about how men can go out and not worry about being attacked. Nothing could be further from the truth.

      @Nocturnalux Před 3 lety +8

@@Slynsmiley It most definitely happens to men as well. The difference is that men are considerably less likely to be sexually assaulted on the street. Women, however, always have that at the back of their mind whenever they venture out alone, especially at night.
And even that, I am also sure is more common than we think because men in such situations are not likely to report.

This was brilliantly done. It felt so real. It's only when I got to the end, I realised that there hadn't been any dialogue, apart from one word. Gestures, eye contact and body language all take precedence here. The main actress was so natural - I felt every second of her discomfort. Every single female can relate to her experience. It brought back memories of a nightmare bus journey as a student, when I was unknowingly singled out and targeted by two guys. I can relate to everything the character experiences - the seemingly harmless initial acknowledgement that soon develops into something more sinister, the increasing sense of discomfort and the fear of not knowing what someone's intentions are. An excellent job.

As a female, I've dealt with many similar situations, so I totally related with the main character & easily felt the anxiety & panic setting in on her. It reminded me of also having to instruct my daughter on stranger danger & coach her on how to handle similar situations, ONLY because she's female. I can definitely say this is a very good psych drama short, but for me, not horror (which is just my opinion). Since I've had to deal with real human monsters throughout my life (due to gender, race, economic status, etc...), I prefer my horror to be more escapist "creature feature". Though this particular film wasn't my thing, I still thank you, Alter. I love your featuring of such a variety of films, so any horror fan can find their own style of spooky ❤️🙂💀.
