  • How to fix a lawnmower that dies immediately after starting. It starts with priming but no fuel is getting to the engine. This shows how to clean the main jet on a Craftsman mower with a Tecumseh engine that has a metal bowl with a bolt that serves as the Main Jet.

My old cheapo but good-o B and S Loewe's brand had start-die syndrome. I came to You Tube, found your fix and it worked. Same thing, some debris in that pin hole. All it took was about 15 minutes to do. It's guys like you who make the world spin more smoothly. thanks again MITEEman

I'm a single mom, when my lawnmower started to have this problem I watched your video. It didn't take me 5 minutes haha, more like 45 minutes but I followed it step by step and it started (and stayed running on the first try). Thanks for your help. I'm sure you saved me a few bucks...and I fixed the lawnmower myself. Go me.

super late to the party, but used your method on the 6.75hp version of the tecumseh, identical layout to the 4.5.
3x priming, and it almost wanted to start, subsequent pulls were very weak afterwards, felt like no compression. figured the prime was delivering enough fuel to get it started up, but not enough fuel was reaching the carb to keep it running. cleaned the metering jet bolt, as per your demonstration, and now it fires up in 1 pull and stays running.
    Thanks for the tutorial!

THANK YOU! this video did the trick. I went through the carburetor 3 times, cleaned air filter, changed spark plug, and to no avail. I decided to watch some vids, yours was the second one and I remember the bulb bolt did have the holes/ main jets. I cleaned them, BOTH were Jammed full of gunk. Finally I put it all back together and... first pull fired right up and it runs better than ever. thanks again! should have watched your video 2 hours ago.

Note: There is a small hole on the bolt by the top thread that you can use a wire to clean out also. I usually use a garbage bag tie and strip the plastic/paper to have only the wire remaining to use to unclog holes. Good video!

Worked like a charm. My Craftsman 5.3HP mower fired up first pull! I just removed the bolt/jet (cleaned it) and did NOT remove the carb bowl. If you remove the bowl, you may need to install a new gasket, otherwise, you risk leaks.

I have a green craftsman push mower with the Tecumseh engine with flooding and starting problems. It looks a little different than the one in the video but has the exact carburetor setup. Pulled the carburetor bowl off and found some cloudy gas. Wiped that out and ran a sewing needle through the small holes even thought they didn't look clogged. Started run up afterwards. After this Im going to run an inline fuel filter. This video is the truth. Thumbs up!

I tried cleaning my carb the same way buy cleaning the screw... It's been raining for two weeks here. I did this before putting it back in the shed. Today the rain has stopped for hours . I took out the lawn mower and put gas into the carb by taking off the air cleaner pour a few drops of gas in. It took about 6 pulls and it started and stayed. I quickly cut my grass front and back but stopped the lawn mower for a second. I started it again having the pull rope come out the top. Finished mowing the lawn. Glad I saw this video. now need to see another tomorrow...
I now will need to fix the pull rope problem tomorrow.

Cleaned Carb with Carb cleaner then put in some starter fluid into carb..Yup you got it. Had a feeling the issue was what you had said..Cleaned that screw bowl and gasket..Starts..
    Thanks for the refresher ..

Excellent presentation!! I have the exact mower purchased in 2005 and still running, but had the same problem. Also, if you have problems starting( you have to pull the cord many time to get it started), there is a starter idle jet #20 on the schematic that also should be cleaned. You'll need a piece of .016" wire and carb cleaner. Just unscrew, clean and screw it back in lightly.

I've found that pressing the RED Primer Bulb three times (3X), like the book says -- is not good.
Pressing it six (6) times (6X) , and it starts on the 1st pull -- EVERY time !!
Also, poking at stuff with steel tools will wreck it quickly -- Use ONLY soft tools, made of aluminum, plastic, or wood.
For poking out jets and other small holes, a single strand of copper wire from a telephone line is PERFECT.

Thanks man, tomorrow morning I'll have a new place to start on my Craftsman. So you're just using a crescent wrench to pinch off the fuel line in? I'm assuming that wouldn't be necessary if I already have the gas tank off. It was a free mower, so it's always run a bit rough. I REALLY don't feel like rebuilding the carb. Made sure the float and needle were correct. Put the bowl on oriented correctly because I even lined them up while I had them upside down and marked them with my engraver. Bowl on correctly with no leaks. New spark plug, air filter, and oil. I even put an online spark plug tester and it’s getting spark. What could it be now?
