  • This is day 6 after having L4/L5 Microdiscectomy Lumbar surgery. My reason for filming this is because a friend of mine had the same procedure and I found it incredibly helpful being able to ask questions from his perspective. I hope this helps.

    Thanks for the insites, I have just recently had the surgery on 3 discs. I am searching for right ways to keep moving and increasing mobility. I have to say since my surgery on 17FEB2021, today 24MAR2021 I'm having hip and unexplainable foot pain when I wake up. Other than that the previous symtoms are gone. Hope the best for all who are candidates of any surgery.

    Hello everyone.. i had L4L5 endoscopic discectomy a month ago.. and ive given two months of off the work and rest. Since then im reading medical articles about everything related with discectomy.. and already see that its not the end, its just the beginning of further problems.. even sometimes i want to cry and wake up from bad dream and asking myself why i didnt read those before. Biggest problem is deflating disc after operation, and 1/3 of patients suffer from facet joint problems or deflated disc blocks nerve holes of vertebral bones later on, and need fusion.. if theres no need for emergency surgery i advise everyone to stick first degree treatment therapies, inflamatories, steroid injections etc, and keep the operation as last resort. Do physio as much as you can and handle pain as much as you can. And believe and remember me, discectomy is not the end, just the beginning of further problems. Edit : i already started to feel lower back and nerve pain at the opposite side of surgery at first month.

      Hi Erika. The majority of the pain/discomfort for me was from the incision. Mine was glued instead of stitched and it didn't hold particularly well in places. However, the incision is only 2 inches long and having a pain-free leg/hip from the moment I woke up more than made up for it. If you live on your own it may be worth preparing a few meals in advance but, apart from that, all the best for the op and enjoy a pain-free leg! Lee.

    All the exercises they recommended was walking walking and more walking, no picking up more than 10 pounds, ni bending. I had my surgery Monday, today is Friday night and taking two Tylenol with 7.5 Norco, I try a couple of times to take only one pill, but, I found out that I need two. About food, not eating after midnight before the surgery, ni drinking, ni even a drop of water, so surgery was over at around 2pm, needless to say, I was very hungry, and I ordered the largest dineer on the menu, I had tree surgeries before and I never had problems getting sick after eating, So I feel very lucky about it, every one warned me about it, but like you, I just had surgery, I deserved to pig out lol 😂 thanks for the video. Pain still there, I move somewhat more easily, some days I wake up and feel like I running, but later rhe pain gets bad during lift off, thanks from Oklahoma, USA 🇺🇸

      That's great news! Waking up without leg pain was the strangest feeling but a good one! Glad all went well and I'm looking forward to the video. If you find laying on your back difficult when doing the post-op exercises, the surgeon said to stand upright and lift the leg that hurt as though you were trying to step on a box. That way the scar tissue surrounding the nerve is reduced.

      @TinTent  Před 7 lety

      The good thing is, when you've had the procedure the leg pain is no longer there from the moment you come round in the recovery room. Getting on the waiting list was a big step as I had to try physio and injection first, but you're on the home straight now!

    • @Stokesie-st8gf
      @Stokesie-st8gf Před 7 lety

      TinTent great to hear that the leg pain goes straight away. I take it that's because the disc is no longer touching the nerve anymore. Been on the NHS list 2 months now, had injection 1 month ago but paid private. Shall I sign up to physio after my op or before do you reckon as I haven't had any yet ?

    • @TinTent
      @TinTent  Před 7 lety +1

      The Doc sent me for physio as the first step to see if it helped/worked before I was put on the waiting list. I didn't have any physio after the op and the surgeon said the most important thing to do was follow the exercise sheet I was given as it will minimise scarring and possible complications. Personally, I found the exercises difficult as most involved laying on my back and the incision was sore and slow to heal. My back & leg, however, felt great! Instead of laying on my back and bringing my knee in to my chest, I was told to stand and lift my knee relatedly as high as I could as this movement will also minimise scarring. 3 months after the op I was running and cycling again

    Good to see you doing well.. I had same thing done 5 years ago and all was well until this time last year when the dreaded sciatica came back with a vengeance! Now it's looking like fusion for me as even with chiropractic care physical therapy and root block injections the pain has been constant for a whole year! I always kept fit and active gym 3 to 4 times per week but still not enough to keep this at bay.. if there's any advice I would give it would be never sit for prolonged periods keep away from squatting and deadlifts at the gym lol.. and maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle! I wish you well and hope you have a better outcome than me.

    Great video, I'm 6 days in now with much improvement sciatica completely gone apart from a few phantom pains but I want to ask did u have back ache around where the incision was made? I seem to get it from sitting and not so much standing.

    • @TinTent
      @TinTent  Před 6 lety +2

      Hi. I had back pain as well at sciatic pain before the op due to the discs that looked particularly thin on the scan. The surgeon said that the pain in my back wouldn't improve greatly as the procedure was aimed at sciatic pain, although I'd say I had a 60% improvement in back pain when things had settled down.. As for back pain after the op, it did hurt for quite some time after, which wasn't helped by an incision that took quite a while to heal. Glue was used instead of stitches and it didn't hold very well. From my own experience, I'd say back ache 6 days after is normal and it probably took 6 weeks. The access the nerve area, the muscles are 'peeled away' and replaced so there's been a lot of trauma around the area. Sounds like your procedure went well and be sure to keep doing the exercises so scar tissue doesn't form around the nerve.

    • @miller7992
      @miller7992 Před 6 lety +1

      TinTent Thanks mate 👍 it's sounds like the back pain is normal due to the surgery and I shouldn't be concerned at this point, I certainly don't need painkillers anymore. It might be due to me thinking I can do more than I should at this stage when really rest is key with the prescribed exercises. After a good day's rest it has eased up a little so I'll follow that path. Hope your doing well and pain free 👍

    • @TinTent
      @TinTent  Před 6 lety +1

      If you're medication-free already, you're doing very well. I was probably taking pills for a month. I'd say 'listen' to your back and rest accordingly but be sure to keep it moving. It's 13 months since my op and I've been running quite a bit for the last 6/7 months with no sciatic pain whatsoever.

    Hi Tin, thank you for uploading this video. Very useful and informative. Trust you are well and fully recovered. Just had the operation done in Vienna yesterday, and it went well according to the doctor. L5s1 disc 15mm bulge causing sciatic pain. I still have a tiny pain when I sit up in the right buttock, thigh and foot but minimal. The nurse said the nerve is still 'adjusting' as it had been 8 months of this nightmare. The back still hurts somewhat, but that might be due to the ridiculously soft mattress in the hospital. My question to you is, did you experience any small sciatic pain after the operation in your first night? I'm also 46 years old and a father of two. 😊

The back pain is minimal now and I get discharged later today but I do still feel my buttock being pinched and in the thigh when I get up or sit for a few minutes. I don't have the full sciatica - downward stream pain anymore. Actually leading up to the operation pain was not so bad but my right harmstring was so tight so it was difficult to distinguish the pain. I'm just nervous that I still feel something when I watch other people's testimonials on youtube who say their sciatic symptoms were completely gone after the surgery. The nurses keep telling me that it is normal and that the nerve is still 'annoyed' and needs to calm down. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what the surgeon tells me later today.

    Hi mate, had the same surgery 8 weeks ago. I knew the surgery worked afterwards. Was in tonnes of pain but I felt that there was more space to think in my brain since the original issue I'd had for 3 years had been solved. I'm worried that I've reherniated the disc as the pain in my lower back and glute has come back very strong along with tingling in my left foot. The pattern with my recovery has been 1.5wks recovering then it'll flare up and I'll be in agony for a while and then it goes down again and then flare up again. Did you have ups and downs with the pain or have I reherniated my disc? Cheers, will

      Hi Gavin. The procedure is largely routine these days and therefore there's not a huge amount to worry about. As for advice before going in, I'd recommend taking a book and looking forward to 3 meals a day with no washing up! After the op, make sure you understand the physio exercises fully as these will help enormously with recovery, and if the process is the same as mine, be prepared to be up and about the following day ready for going home. If you have constant nerve pain down your leg, coming round from the anesthetic with no leg pain is a great feeling. Let me know how things go. Ta, Lee

The operation isn’t aimed at back pain and I was told that my ‘thin’ L4/L5 discs could continue to be problematic although my leg pain from trapped nerve would be gone. I’d say back pain is now 60% better. Re hip, I occasionally get Bursitis and the surgeon said this could be what it is as it’s nothing back related. Hi Kurtis. I haven’t had any pain in my leg since the operation, so the op was a complete success with regard to nerve pain. I have always had lower back pain, before the op too, and I was told before the procedure that this is due to dehydrated discs and the operation wouldn’t necessarily help this. Hi. The best piece of advice is to keep doing the physio exercises as this minimises the chance of scar tissue building up around the nerve. Before the operation, I had pain in my buttock and numbness to the outside of the knee and in my toes. This has all gone, but I do need to be careful of my lower back as it can be painful as I don't have much disc material left. Recovery wise, a friend was back to work in two weeks, but my recovery was probably closer to a month. I hope all goes well, Lee

    Hi, I'm 28 and had my microdiscectomy yesterday after walking round with a slipped disc at L4/L5 for 18 months and have a couple of questions for you.
    1. How long did you have your slipped disc for?
    2. Do/did you have any residual nerve pain post-op, and if so, how long did it take to subside?
    I can now stand up completely straight (something I've been unable to do for 6 months) but I'm still experiencing similar nerve pain to that I was feeling prior to surgery.
    Really appreciate you posting the video first of all but any further info you could provide me with would be greatly appreciated.

      Apologies, I should have read your replies prior to commenting myself. I now know your nerve pain was gone upon waking up but I'm still curious to know how long you were experiencing pain prior to surgery.
      Further to my comment, I'd like to add that the nerve pain I'm currently experiencing isnt as bad as the shooting pain down the leg I was experiencing before and seems to be localised to hip, which has been the epicentre of my pain over the last 18 months.
      I'm thinking the nerve root has been damaged and will either dissipate once the swelling has gone down or take some time to repair itself fully?
      Anything you could advise given your experience?

      @@madaxeman12345 Hi Duncan. Apologies for the delay in replying. My nerve pain disappeared after the surgery but I was told that nerve pain can take time to subside depending on the amount of swelling, etc. The surgeon also stressed the importance of keeping it moving after the op, by standing straight and lifting each knee. I think this limits scar tissue by keeping the nerve pocket free.
