    What is Mexico Dental care Like? In this video, Travel Expert, Jim Kellett interviews Dr. Karla M. Figueroa DDS, about dental costs and procedures in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Karla is a Doctor of Dental Surgery and a Restorative Dentistry Specialist. She has offices in both Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta. Saving money is great but I also asked Karla about where she received her education and about the materials that they use here in Mexico. If you want to know how to find a good dentist in Mexico, don't worry, I’ll also give you some tips on how to find a good dentist in Mexico.
    Why is dental tourism so popular in Puerto Vallarta?
    Mexico is a top choice for dental tourism due to the quality of the dental care, and affordability… And the proximity to the United States makes it easy for many people to include a vacation in with their medical procedure.
    Here are some examples of cost savings that we talk about in the video:
    Full Porcelain/Ceramic Crown: USA $1,500, Mexico $340.
    Porcelain Veneer per tooth: USA $1,200 or more;
    Mexico $350 & zirconia for $450.
    Root canal (any tooth): USA $1,200, Mexico $220.00.
    For a titanium dental implant with abutment and standard crown in the United States: $3,900, the same procedure in Puerto Vallarta is around $1,400- $1,600.

    A number of years back my company recommended dentist in Via Hermosa, Mexico was supposed to speak English. SURPRISE --He did not and after we went through the translation dictionary it became obvious that I needed a crown. I authorized the procedure and the dentist approached my chair with a drill. I looked at him and said drugs, Novocain, etc. He finally understood a shot me good. Later I fund that locals did not use deadeners because if the cost. Apparently he did a good job as I still have that gold crown 25 years later.

    Fun fact, the UNAM National Autonomous University of Mexico (in English ) is the largest university in Latin American and the most important university in Mexico, the faculty of dentistry is the oldest and the most prestigious school of dentistry in Latin America, you can also study dentistry at FES Iztacala or FES Zaragoza, both of UNAM, the Faculty of dentistry also has great relationships with other universities around the world such as Loma Linda, university at buffalo or Harvard, that’s why Mexico has the same quality in dental medicine than the USA 🦷👩🏻‍⚕️👀

    50 years ago I had a tooth pulled when we were visiting Mexico. I got novacaine just before the tooth was pulled. Just a couple of minutes before. Wasn't numb. But it wasn't bad. We stayed in Mexico for 5 years and when I came back to the US the dentist that had worked on my grandmother's teeth when she was a teen checked me out. He said he had never seen such perfect teeth. Didn't need braces or fillings. It was because of all the fresh fruit and vegetables, the crusty bolillo rolls, pork rinds (chicharon) the sugar cane I peeled with my teeth and all the other food I ate that gave my teeth a workout. I couldn't believe how soft food was here in the US until I had my first fast food burger in the US. And I ate candy every day while living in mexico. And most of the time I forgot to brush my teeth. Within a year of being back in the US I had several cavities. And I was eating a lot less candy and brushing my teeth every day.

    My pick is Los Algodones, which is a five minute walk from Andrade, California. That's the border crossing where California, Arizona and Mexico connect. After doing a lot of online research and sending my dental records to a half dozen dentists, I visited two dental practices in Los Algodones Feb 20-21 2024. My needs are full mouth restorations, "All On 4" upper and lower. I'll be going to the SANI Dental Group there in March for the first phase of this work. I selected them for a number of reasons. Certainly their online reputation is major, they are the largest and oldest in Los Algodones with a large staff covering every dental specialty. Other factors are the ability to have a complete package of dental specialists, the 3D imaging, the dental lab and even the hotel all (Cielito Lindo at Mediplaza) in one location at one price. My impression of SANI was a very professional, friendly, clean, well equipped place doing a large volume of patients. Even so I was seen by several dentists as my mouth, the x-rays and my history were examined. Comparing to USA estimates, the cost there will be 1/4 to 1/3 of American dentists.

    Get a recommendation from someone who lives there and make sure the dentist speaks English - not just staff. I thought I did all of my homework but I went through a dental tourism company and it was a nightmare. My teeth felt like sandpaper after the cleaning, I got bad, unnecessary fillings without an X-ray - after I thought I don’t even know if it was the dentist doing the procedure - how would I know? I know it sounds crazy but after I wondered if it was the hygienist who did all of the work. Get recommendations and not from the dentist. What a nightmare and I did a lot of research.

    • @valerieann8007
      @valerieann8007 Před 2 lety +3

      Yes. The prices she quoted are much MUCH higher than what the Mexican people pay for those procedures. The prices are jacked up for tourists. It's a better plan to get full X-Rays & complete dental work plan recommendation for all the work you need done before going, get a trusted Mexican friend and have them call & ask quality dentists with great reviews via Google, how much prices would be for all those procedures for their friend who's visiting from another town. Request same from several recommended dentists, and compare carefully before choosing. Even visit and look around with out talking 1st, to help decide. Shrug & go "mmmm" with a Mexican accent if they ask anything, & leave, before choosing. Once a bad dentist screws you up, it's a bit late to correct a rushed decision. THEY, however, are often desperate to make more money and wish to rush you into selecting services asap. THEY don't want you to be so careful, usually.
      The dentist I had in Mexico, DF, gave the impression underneath facades, that since the majority of the population is quite poor, the degreed, educated higher earners have to desperately compete for the money of the few who can afford their prices. Try sharing pleasantries too often, or your plan for all people to have dream houses, and experience them tell YOU, that THEY charge by the hour to give talks, and don't have time for any of your conversations. Having been educated in the US, my dentist & her dentist husband, while striving to hide it and act nicely all the time, showed bits of underlying racism and hatred for the much higher income of most Americans, and the fact they have to pay the same prices Americans pay for cars, electronics, tools & machinery PLUS shipping from the US to Mexico, for most of those things, so have to try much harder than you & do way more to have prosperity than you, so they don't have time for pleasantries with you and giving you advice a lot of times, but that was just my dentist after going almost every day for a couple months to bleach my teeth super white and get ALL my mercury fillings removed and super white inlays and overlays to replace the fillings removed and plus 2 bridges. She botched the job in the end, because everything she did eventually fell out. It looked beautiful for a whole year though.

I have seen so many crazy US treatment plans for procedures people do not need at all but since your US dentist (generally you never see a specialist thb) told you what you need, you mistrust Mexican dentists and their treatment plans. From my research those numbers are all on the very high end like Los Angeles and New York dentists and comparable high costs in Mexico. Getting multiple referrals is most important. You can get quality work for substantially less than what she is quoting. But don't take my word. I suggest talking with other Americans who have gone or live there. Also I would highly recommend avoiding practices like the female dentist being interested and promoted in this video. A practice whose specialty is dental tourism is going to focus on foreigners as customers. Without listing all the redflags that invokes with me do your research. If it makes sense to you then you have been cautioned good luck. For me I want a dentist that specializes in good dentistry with no regard if you are from another country or local.

    I currently rely on upper and lower dentures, but they're extremely uncomfortable and I'd love to explore other options. Dental implants have always been my dream, but the cost in the US is prohibitive. I've researched options in Mexico, but unfortunately, the prices haven't been significantly lower than what I've found here. If your office could offer a more affordable solution for dental implants, I would be very interested in discussing the possibility of treatment with you.

      Make sure you research the dentist before getting anything done. There are several van life CZcamsrs who have posted horror stories about using dentists who were right across the border where you're going. I'm not trying to disparage Mexican dentists. You get bad ones sometimes regardless of where you go. These people went for cleanings, fillings, implants and dentures. None of them had a positive experience. They got infections, were not prescribed anything for pain, the implants failed. They were out the money that they spent, plus had to pay a dentist in the states to fix all of the problems. Chances are, if you see a dentist in Mexico that is recommended by the local people, you should be okay. If you just see some random dentist who practices in the border towns, you probably won't be okay.

My smile has prevented me from dating in my prime in my 30s and now injuring my 40s it’s preventing me from getting the work that I deserve because of my smile. The bridge fell out after one and a half years and now I am going to try my luck with a 2nd dentist in the same city. Fingers crossed. I had 5 front upper teeth crowned in Thailand. They all fell out.
    Unfortunately I just have to roll with this. I just can't afford the dentists in America. So I go to Mexico even though I know I am rolling the dice. My story is quite common. Sorry but dentists in Mexico are just not as good as American dentists. You just have to hope you get lucky and find someone who isn't ruthless. Often they hope you will blow away when things go wrong.

    Dental hygienist here. The most important aspect is infection control. People try to save a few bucks and risk infections. They get poor work to then have to have the work repeated a couple of years down the line. A periodontic deep cleaning is different from a propholactic teeth cleaning. I'm not saying there aren't good dentist outside the U.S, but you don't want to know the poor dentisty I've seen done in other countries using inferior hardware. How do you know instruments are getting correctly sterilized and the training received? One failed sterilized drill bit or scaler and you may be exposed to something you weren't counting on.
