    I know the cycle of injury can be one of the most exhausting and challenging things. In times like this when I was injured or upset I took the phrase “why is this happening to me” and instead changed the narrative to “why is this happening for me”. You’re tougher than you think :) Continue to listen to what your body needs and the rest will come. As needed you can always diversify workouts to the pool or other places. I recommend listening to podcasts featuring the Boulder Colorado ultra runner Anton Krupicka. He was once at the top of sport with Scott Jurek and Killian Jornet. Anton has a story of resilience and diversification after his injury that may speak to you. Hang in there Steven, you will get through this and you will continue to run!

    I'm not an ultra runner but at one point I was training to run an ultra. During that training I developed a sharp pain in my right hip. Luckily after an MRI the Dr didn't see anything of concern and was told to just take some time off. After a couple of months or so of very light running and strength training, the pain went away and I was able to finish a trail marathon that year. Sending vibes that you too will have as simple of a healing process as I did

    Thanks for providing an update. I'm sure I'm not the only one that was wondering about the MRI results. You seem to be approaching things well by starting to accept the situation and doing the things that you can to keep moving. Not sure if biking agitates the issue but if not I'd suggest adding it to your hiking to maintain your current fitness level.
    I've been through similar health issues, a very big one last year that made it hard to even walk up a few flights of stairs. What helped me was just accepting my situation and doing what I could and knowing that if I took care of my health and my issue was treatable then I'd still have plenty of time to hit my goals. I just needed to focus on healing and shift my time frame expectations. It was disappointing and depressing, but I knew it wouldn't last forever. For the last six months now I've been making steady progress towards those goals. I'm mentioning this in hopes it helps somehow. As time passes it brings trials and tribulations but they usually pass and you find yourself in good times once again. I hope you keep providing updates as I'm sure that your voice could help others going through things preventing them from running.
    I wish you a speedy recovery!

    I feel you man, no running is brutal. But strength training can fill some of that void. I went down for 3 months with bad soleus strain a few years back and was already lifting but went after it and dropped carbs and upped protein and changed body composition. Only put on a couple lbs of muscle but really leaned out. I’m a much stronger runner now because of it especially with poles and speed. Putting on muscle takes work but maintaining is fairly easy once you’re healthy enough to run full time.

    Hang in there. A couple years ago, after I had started running marathons, I had excruciating pain in my knee. The MRI revealed “bone marrow edema” and “avascular necrosis,” the second diagnosis being basically a degenerative death sentence.
    I took it easier for 4-5 months. I still ran, despite being told not to, but a lot less.
    In a few month’s time, I started feeling BETTER. When I went for a follow up, they basically had to admit that it wasn’t “avascular necrosis” because that wouldn’t be getting better (it would be continual degeneration).
    Medical professionals do their best to interpret MRIs, but sometimes the prognosis is better than they make it out to be. I hope you find yourself in a similar position. Stay positive.
    Fast forward a couple years, I’ve run two more marathons and two ultras. Pain and issue-free.

      Steve needs to hear what the medical people say, maybe PTs. I had this basic problem 40 years ago. I decided to swim doing basic crawl stroke with flutter kick. I reasoned the flutter would be tolerable than the frog kick with the breast stroke. Frog involved lifting kegs up sorts kinda running thing.
      Wrong! The flutter kick was more painful, even just a few inches movement. Frog kick was doable. Still doesn't make sense to me. When I could run, coach Roy Benson had me do quotes at the track, very short dinky stride. Recover a quarter. Do four repeats.three days in a,row. Rest a day then 8 400s, etc.

      Well balanced and rounded vegans don't tend to have dietary related issues.
      Hence there's many serious distance athletes who are fine as vegans. Scott Jurek and Damian Hall come to mind without thinking too much. Think Walmsley is vegetarian, but don't quote me on that.
      I imagine it's very, very unlikely this is the cause of Steven's issues.

    • @jameswestmoreland9717

      Probably got some heat on that one but it's a reasonable question. Need to consider all variables.

    • @Reinhardt_Kozlowski
      @Reinhardt_Kozlowski Před 3 měsíci +2

      @@jameswestmoreland9717 He should definitely at least consider it. I don't have anything against veganism in general but I do question why are there so few (maybe none?) elite-tier athletes that are vegan. And I'm not talking about "elites" like Scott Jurek - he was a pioneer when ultrarunning was miniscule but he'd be smoked by today's standards. Walmsley is vegetarian which IMO is a massive upgrade since he has access to protein/nutrient dense foods like milk, yogurt, cheese, and one of nature's greatest superfoods: eggs. Craziest thing IMO is that lots of vegans drink alcohol regularly, which is literally poison, but for some reason won't touch salmon, eggs, or free-range grass-fed organic beef. If it's the ethics that's a concern, there are definitely ways to ethically consume animal products - might cost more, but it's worth it. I wish Steven the best (which is why I made my suggestion in the first place) and hope he gets this figured out, because man, I don't think I've ever seen someone as injury-prone as him.

    • @scriptosaurusrex
      @scriptosaurusrex Před 3 měsíci

      @@Reinhardt_Kozlowskihoping this doesn't get deleted, CZcams isn't great with letting external links stand. According to this, and I haven't bothered checking the individuals, although some like Hamilton I was aware of, there's plenty top elite athletes who are vegan. Interesting to see a couple of soccer players and in particular tennis players in there, who have a lot more stop starr forces on their bodies. Tennis might not go to the lengths of ultra running, but is effectively a seriously above average sport in terms of duration.
      I was expecting to see more iron man athletes there, I had thought that was a fairly common place for vegans, but maybe (like ultra running) it's not mainstream enough for a generic first hit on a search engine type article.
      As for Jurek. He maybe would get smoked. Or maybe he would also benefit from the improvements in equipment, general nutrition understanding and the support of bigger companies and still be competing. Like Paula Radcliffe said about Marathon race times (I am paraphrasing), things have changed and the tools are better and the toolboxes bigger.
      Damian Hall is very much a current athlete setting fkts and competing at the top end in ultras including the spine, dragons back, tor de geants etc.
      Thanks for confirming Walmsley is vegetarian. I take your point that it's more flexible than veganism on paper.
      I am not vegan myself but really hate the dross that comes out about veganism. I hear you that you are not against veganism per se, thanks for not going into panic defence lash out mode. While I suppose it is _possible_ that it's a factor, as I stated before I think it is very unlikely to be the main cause. Sure investigate it, but it would be really far down my personal priorities list. First I would be considering footwear, technique, genetics and just pure bad luck before outright blaming veganism.
