How To Make 'THE 4 CHORDS' Not Suck!

- I hear so many people playing 'those' four chords over and over, so here is a quick lesson on how to make them not sound so boring!
I go over it in the key of C major and I show you some different chord positions and voicings you can use for each one. They involve adding 7ths, 9ths, 11ths. If you want to know exactly what I was doing and how I was constructing each chord then check out some of my other videos - I really go into detail in some of those!
Practice these voicings for each chord and then slowly put it together adding a few notes here and there. It will transform the way you play this chord progression and save everybody having to listen to the same boring chords bashed out over and over!

Instant Inspiration... Your content solidifies the will to practice, these tutorials add pizzaz and a breath of fresh air to long practice sessions.Thank you for sharing. Luv your content.
I always add either the b3 or the b6 degree of any scale to the IV chord. It completely changes the feel with just one change in note.
Looked much in your channel for a cople of years ago! Now when i started with piano i see your active!! Keep on! Your lessons are perfect! Short and we learn much!! Sorry for my bad english and thanks for your lessons!
This channel is amazing. Thank you so much!

Great videos , well done
You are my teacher that I love
thanks again Simon!
Fantastic video, and very well explained, I've been learning for a few months now , but after watching this, I went straight to my keyboard and was well chuffed with what I played.
That's good to hear! Glad you found it useful 😀
Just that 2nd chord sequence you did made me subscribe 😭
I'm just starting to learn keyboard. I hope this lesson will help. Thanks a lot.
Thank u. very useful
Fantastic 👌
An amazing video! I had played the piano as a child and hated it, so as I got older, I thought piano was a lost cause for me and that I'd never be good at it. But I had just recently seen Bohemian Rhapsody the movie, and on a whim, decided to learn how to play the beginning on piano. What surprised me was that after just 3 days, I could play it nearly perfectly. And as I'm watching your videos now, I'm gaining more and more confidence with my piano playing. Chords are becoming much easier. Subscribed. Thanks!
That's so nice to hear! I'm glad you've had the motivation to return and pick it up again, it's a wonderful instrument and it can add so much value to your life if you keep at it :)
Thanks for the lesson Simon. I have a suggestion for other advanced beginners like me. The goal of this exercise is to progress from simply banging the chords out in time to playing them musically and expressively with fine rhythms, voicings, passing notes, etc.
I found that I have to slow way, way down in order to have time to accomplish all that, given my skill level. I swallowed my pride, and set my drum machine to 50 bpm. When I did, suddenly I was able to really make music with this progression.
Now I am positioned to work up from there, slowly increasing the speed.
My pleasure Steve! That is fantastic advice, so much more is always learnt when practiced slowly. Makes a huge difference! It's good to hear you are making progress :)
I should add that I am doing the progression in key of E, which is making it a bit trickier for me.
Exactly what I needed! Great tips. Sub'd!
Awesome!
Thanks Simon! Great video
My pleasure, Cortney! :) Thanks for your email as well!
PianoPig You’re welcome
Thanks great video. Please keep going.
Glad you enjoyed it - I have absolutely no intention of stopping! :)
Nice video! Thank you!
My pleasure :)
I’d love more tips on that kind of thing
Watching your channel to learn more about theory so that I can listen and identify song chords better
Impecable
Brilliant
GREAT GREAT GREAT THANKS
Sound's so cool,,,to really play piano using real notation so, so cool,, just keep making videos we are most certainly learning new inspirational way's to bin the old status quo thank you.
Hi There! Thanks for the video!
It sounds pretty good with the changes you've made!, but im curious on what's its the explanation for those changes. For instance, on the C-chord ... why adding D and B? those notes are not in even on the chord :S.
Just checking out if there's "some kind of rule" that im missing or its just musical inspiration!
Thanks in advance!!
I just discovered another cool trick (in addition to slowing way down). In your right hand, stick exclusively to two note voicings. This can open up a lot of possibilities, and is easy to manage for the advanced beginner.
Play a melody in the top note, but underlie it with a single other interesting voice. Typically avoid the root of the chord in both voices, but that is not a rule. Keep the lower voice somewhat stable, and, when it changes, it goes to a nearby note.
For example, in the I chord, play: R+3, R+4, R+3, 7+5, 7+4, 7+3, 4+9. (The 7 and 4 are lower than the R).
In the V chord play (relative to the 5 chord): 7+2, 7+4, 7+4, 7+5. (the 7 here is the same as the 4 in the I chord.) (I am not sure if, theoretically, i should say 2 and 4 there, or 9 and 11).
Etc. for the other chords.
(probably i should make a video)
Sooooo good
Thanks!
is it possible to know the name of the software that appears as a graphic above the keyboard you're playing and shows us what notes and chords you're playing?
Sure! It's called Midiculous :)
Thanks.
Nice! 👍🎹🇳🇿
Do you have sheet music for your videos
What are the chords you play at the intro to Piano Pig?
Cm9, Bbm9, Ab13, G7(#5), Cm9 - I'll be making a video on this in the near future :)
Please can you write the tonic sol-fa for me
there r really uncomfortable four note chords. the ones that stretch over 2 octaves
Keep practicing them and your hands will eventually stretch out a bit
I have to slow everything down , save and study this one at chord at a time. By the time I barely understood playing notes that are next to each other we've moved on. Sorry I'm just to retarded.
Thanks for the lessons , so much squeezed in a short session .
I'm going to be better in no time!!❤❤❤
im still confused
Okay, so in other words, you need to be drunk.
Jokes aside, this really is useful and it helped me a lot! Thank you!
buddy I'm still struggling with the boring one
this guy flexes on the piano

You know people call the 4 chords a basic bitch chord.
Well, I gotta say, I'm a basic bitch, cuz I have grown so hopelessly in love with this chord in my 29 years of life. So, world, stand aside for this basic bitch.
