    • @citrusjuicebox
      @citrusjuicebox  Před 2 lety +21

      Holy crap, you're right! I think mine is a printing error. The blank is part G20, which isn't even printed in the manual. I believe this was originally added for the PB MG AGE-1 Unit 2. Dalong's photo of the G plate from 2012 shows G20 missing as well.
      That's crazy! For the 2016 reprint, whoever set up the machine must've forgot to block out the part. But what a silly little thing to exclude in the first place?!

    I feel like I'm in the minority about not caring too much about inner frame detail. Sure, it makes inevitable clear versions significantly less interesting, but aside from that, not many people I know of display their kits practically half-assembled. It's fun to see during the build, but after that, it might as well not even be there. I'd much rather the design effort that goes into such inner detail go into making the actual finished product as detailed, sturdy, and featureful as possible.
    In my opinion, the only inner frame detail that's worth designing is that which would be visible on the finished kit, such as under vents, inside opening sections, or in and around moving parts of the design where they'll be exposed.

    • @Zeromaru42
      @Zeromaru42 Před 2 lety +1

      It's cool to see but my main issue with the Age 1 isn't the frame but rather how the build is very forgettable. Yes this kit has smooth and good engineering with the hands in particular being fairly good, but it just has nothing to bring to the table on it's own. I like to call it the Grandpa of the Reborn 100s and the stepdad of most of the GMs. The Age 1 is the awkward Step Child that the Reborn 100 line's philosophy was born from. It walked so Reborn 100 and the GMs could run.

      @Zeromaru42 Před rokem +1

      @@enriqueornelasperez4673 To clarify I didn't mean that Age 1 was a bad kit when I said that. I meant that the build FOR ME was kinda forgettable. I really think the Age 1 doesn't get enough credit for the fact that its manipulators are so good they are on nearly every GM to this day. Honestly the Age 1 I think mainly falls in the really weird in between phases of Reborn 100 and MG to the point where it straddles the line of Uncanny Valley. It's like it's clearly a Master Grade no doubt about that, but it's simpler and no frills design makes it more of a Reborn 100 kit. This combined with it being a little more expensive led to a build that just felt really quick and nothing really spectacular. It's a good kit for the innovations that it brought and started. Parts of this kit's inner frame are still being recycled to this day.
      I just don't think the Age 1 was particularly the most memorable kit for me but parts of it are memorable, just in other kits. It's like the Age 1 is the twice removed Cousin of nearly every Grunt Unit past a certain point. That alone makes the Age 1 a good kit in my book. An incredibly simple and disappointing one for what it was back then but without it there may not have been a Reborn 100 line.

  • @shadow306k
    @shadow306k Před 2 lety +24

    The simpler MG kits like the Jegan/Gunner Zaku were some of my favourites just because I'm not a person that cares too much about the inner frame details, I just like building what I think looks good and if the inner build is simpler to make it easier on me, I'm all for it. This thing looks great put together, and all these extra details on the armour made it a must-have

    The vents are such a nice touch that it makes me wish Bandai added similar details to other MGs. I've never been a fan of anime accurate designs and for me surface detail is more important than complex inner frames. Lack of surface detail is one of the things that disappointed me about the MG Gundam Mk-5. While it was an enjoyable build, side-by-side the Age-1 is more interesting to look at. Of course, I might be a bit biased, because the Age-1 is one of my favorite interpretations of the traditional Gundam design.
    That said, I do agree that it's not worth the markups at all. Wait for a reprint like we had last year.

    Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I understand is that this kit along with many of the other Gundam Age kits and like the series were aimed at younger audiences which was their main objective and not the most veteran people in the hobby of building model kits and they also didn't know the gundam franchise and they didn't know what gunpla was and why it wouldn't become very complicated and frustrating for them to put together a large master for the first time so it was a simple kit inside which was good idea but the problem was the price which was slightly higher for what that kit was. It is also worth adding that the gundam age-1 normal is a relatively simple design so they couldn't do much about those issues either and the truth is I do think that the The kit is good for beginners who are just entering the hobby for the first time but for people who already have experience building model kits it is not highly recommended, at least if you already know what you are dealing with and are a fan of the gundam age-1 normal and more yes. you get it relatively cheap maybe at some point I bought it and I do like the gundam age-1 normal but I'll look for it at a sale

    I can appreciate the Age 1 Normal Frame as although it builds simple, it's still a different build in principle. A different approach to assembling a leg or an arm is refreshing.
    The same cannot be said with some of the newer MGs though.
    I'm still having trouble understanding why people like the Virtue so much when the tech and design used in it is practically something that has been done before. It looks good, sure but it's not that fascinating to figure out.

    Detailed internals can be neat, but often those details only get noticed once during the build and are never really seen again. Personally I respect a solid kit more than a pretty hand grenade. Jegan was my first MG, and to this day it's still my favorite because it's been absolutely rock solid. Hasn't shed a single part (even after almost 2 years of JoJo poses, a few falls and other shenanigans), and can hold nearly any pose it's put in with complete fortitude! I don't think Jegan or zaku gunner are bad MGs for being basic, they're just grunts after all. Mass production suits would also be by default less focused on details anyway.

    • @citrusjuicebox
      @citrusjuicebox  Před měsícem

      In your case, an HG would've sufficed. And that's basically all the MG Jegan is, which is still a disgrace to the rest of the MG brand. It's all about expectations.
      You know what else is rock solid? An actual rock. But if you only got a rock in the box when you meant to buy a model kit, you'd be pretty disappointed, wouldn't you?
      On the other hand, if I needed paving stones, and a bunch of some-assembly-required plastic bits came out of the bag, I'd be pretty annoyed.

    It feels odd that you single out the SEED Zaku and Jegan as being underwhelming when this kit was in the same boat before being seen as ahead of its time. I think we'll start getting 2 different strands of MG from now on, 1 where the kit feels super intricate and has a complex inner frame (think Ver Kas or MGEX) and then another strand where it'll just be RE/100 but having a full inner frame where hiding seam/mold lines is top priority and the frame is a means to end for stability and articulation

    • @citrusjuicebox
      @citrusjuicebox  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I'm pretty sure that I argued this kit was ahead of its time not in a good way, but you're absolutely correct. Since this, we got the MG Wing EW series, MG GAT-X Ver.RM series, MG ZGMF Ver.2.0 series, and so on--all designed with the same ethos.

    The finger parts are not a bad thing at all, imo. They're by far the best style of Gunpla hand. Articulated hands are more expressive but fragile and even with pegs have difficulty holding weapons, and the less said about the three finger triggerfinger split the better.

    • @citrusjuicebox
      @citrusjuicebox  Před rokem

      You're not wrong, but this particular execution is not the best. The palms are fragile, and it's easy to damage them in such a way that the finger parts will not grip securely anymore.

    Apart from the inner frame looks (as in "it isn't a detailed inner frame), that MG is excellent. Fun to pose, great heroic look, unique design. The shoulder armor is a bit floppy though, and design wise, I don't like its signature black knee armor (nothing some paint can't fix).
    I've built my share of Gunpla and other model kits, and I still think that the MG Age 1 is a perfectly legitimate kit for a Master Grade. Sure, it's bare bones, nothing spectacular, but all it does it does it well.

    kinda sad to hear so many bad things about this kit, i love the redesign and it was gonna be my first MG i picked but i ended up picking the origin RX-78. funny enough I think i would have like this way more and still want one. the injection model hands on the mg origin ruined almost the whole build for me and it now sits on the corner of a shelf with no hands. i dont think a simpler build or less complex inner frame really hurts it as much for me when it comes to more casual opinions, a detailed inner frame is cool and really fun but its not something im really gonna see again after im dont building it.

      It's not so bad. Sure, there are better-value kits, but there aren't that many of them, and once you've built them all, stuff like this is still worth checking out.

    I think the design and the kit held up quiet well all these years. Too bad the animated series was crap.

    Inner frame detail literally doesn't matter unless you buy a clear version.

      You can choose to leave the exterior partially assembled, so detail can matter. You can also choose to paint the inside of the armor of a clear color kit to achieve a special effect, so detail doesn't matter. It all depends on what the modeler wants to do.
