You and your team are a huge asset to Kendoka everywhere Andy, keep up your hard work! Fight on!
Thank you very much!
As an American Shodan that hasn't practiced in 4 years, thank you. College has gotten in the way of my practice. This is a great refresher and needs to be grown for the sake of Kendo.
College is that difficult
I appreciate how your new YT-site is slowly building a strong stock of videos; quality over quantity.
The Skyrim music made me happy :D Thanks for this great video!
Thanks for watching!
Skyrim + Kendo = Epic Super Kendo!
This is such a great video for beginners like me. I'm super impressed with the level of instruction on this one.
めちゃめちゃキレと冴えがある打ち込みですね。すばらしい!!
Thanks Andy and Max great video, really appreciate the effort you are putting into sharing your kendo knowledge.
I like your confident, yet very humble outlook, Andy. It’s great to see teachers like you! I’m inspired.

All joking aside... I love your content! It really helped me train even better.
your
Your videos (including the stuff on AJBTV) are incredibly helpful. By far the most helpful kendo videos on youtube, And I know that a bunch of other people I train with also watch your channel.
So thank you heaps.
Also your Kirikaeshi is crazy fast!.
Thanks! I am glad that you enjoy the videos! Thanks for your support!
Thanks for sharing, its amazing that there are so many variations of the same technique......different Sensei's say this or that but then when I go to another dojo, I get told its wrong and to do it there way..which I don't mind as I love to learn new things all the time........
this is fantastic, love the occasional japanese subs as well. arigato!
Thank you for the wonderful Exhibit!! I started 3 months ago in KENDO...Dojo YMCA in Chile!!
brilliant! Thanks Andy
Thanks for watching!
U know what my dojo is called?its called my bedroom
Great video
I like the kiai and every other elements
Nice training Greeting from Chile
Thank you!
In my dojo we also do a variant of kirikaeshi where we do 2 men and then 2 do alternating. So instead of 4 men forwards and 5 men backwards it's 2 men and then 2 do forwards and 2 men, 2 do and 1 men backwards.
Hi Andy, first of all just wanted to say another great video, and thanks for everything you're doing for practitioners around the world. I've been having a concern with my kendo, regarding the do strike. I notice that in the kirikaeshi variant here, your strikes to the do are a bit wider, whereas I have seen/heard other people very adamant about making the strikes very straight, almost as if aiming for kote, but just striking the torso instead. Maybe not something to make an entire video about, but could you clarify (at least what you believe to be) the proper do strike? Thanks
Thank Andy :). Can you make a video about footwork please?
Yes, this a topic we would like to cover in the future!
i love the gladiator music during the commercial
Thanks
Lovely
Hey Andy, thank you for your videos; I’ve been going through the newer videos and into the older videos. I’m a recent Kendo practitioner and I am curious - I’ve had a few people tell me to really practice the use of my left hand (and you used the right on the first strike of the video, so my assumption is that you are using power on the right hand), but I’m also curious about what your take is on grip? I’ve noticed that I do NOT grip my shinai well as it is coming down and I’ve heard from my one of my sensei’s to squeeze as I’m coming down, and also to point my thumbs down, along other things. I find that gripping the shinai is SUPER important to set me up for success… and maybe I haven’t hit the video in which you cover that yet. I know this is a 6 year old video but it would be awesome to get some feedback from you! Cheers from Seattle
Great video, thank you Andy, though I would like to tell you that the link to kendostar in the description is not working.
Thanks for letting me know! I have fixed it!
Man, even Chuck Norris is helping you. This must be a good sign. :D
good
omg all of you are amazing i am practicing by myself and its hard :v
Круто!
Oh my gosh, do you guys live in Fukuoka? I'm in Aso! I'd absolutely LOVE to meet with you! If it were at all possible, I'd like to pay you for some basic kendo practice help! I just started my practice, but my Japanese is often quite lacking, and so it is difficult to pick up the intricacies of what my sensei tells me. Would it be possible to meet up for such a practice, or even just to talk? I apologize if this is a little forward!
Hi,
Thanks for your comment!
We wouldn't dream of making you pay for help with Kendo, and we have a busy schedule, but send us an email - mail@kendostar.com and we'll see what we can do to help!
All the best,
Andy
yes, okay !
Hi Sensei! Quick question! I used to train Kendo at a high school in Ibaraki PRefecture. When we did kirikaeshi we did 2 menuchi pass throughs...including during dan exams when I returned back to the US they only do 1 and I noticed you showed 1 too. Do you know why we did 2?!?!? Thanks!!
I will answer this in this week's Kendo RANT video ;)
@@TheKendoShow Cool thanks! Just wondering what is right and wrong? I have had kendo teachers in the US tell me that is wrong...which I think is BS since I lived in Japan and trained w very good Kendo teachers. I also trained at a Police dojo in my city and in Osaka and both said it was fine to do 2?? So very confusing!!
Sir can you please make audio books for the blind thank you
How would you do this Kirikaeshi if you dont have Bogu yet?
Thank you for these videos!
Hi Mauro! If you don't have Bogu yet, you should do Kirikaeshi as per the first example, but without actually striking your opponent :)
Hope that helps!
The opponent should hold his shinai up his head holding it with both hands (about 10 cm from his head, and 10 cm from his face) in a horizontal position. And you are striking the shinai instead of his head.
Ou.. It's been 8 months, you probably have Bogu by now. :))
普通に上手くて草も生えない
Lol I like the Skyrim theme 18:50
I really appreciate the skyrim music kicking in around the 19:30 mark haha
very・・・beautiful.
Watashi wa finrandojin!
Are Kendo attacks strikes or cuts? Uchi or Kiri? They sure look like strikes to me.
It's more accurate to think of them as strikes ;)
I can't swing it fast. My teacher said "You are using it like an axe." But how can I swing mine faster?
Please help... (Sorry...)
N 4 Don’t focus on power, more speed. If you think solely about form and try to retain an accurate light hit, you’re speed will increase naturally. Swinging an axe is all about power whereas kendo is about being faster than your opponent with an intent to accurately hit him. Sorry if this is too late haha
Is there a silent Kendo style`? I´d love to practise, but I hate shouting at people and even more when others shout at me.
I know I'm responding to a year old comment but I think others can learn from the answer.
Kendo is all about winning the battle before it has even started. When entering a battle, you must maintain everything you have learned to perfection, bow to the right angle, keep your back straight and make sure when you shout it's loud.
All of this goes towards in more vulgar terms, scaring the fuck out of your opponent if even just disconcerting them subconsciously. Making yourself loud when shouting is the most obvious of these.
So unfortunately there is no style of Kendo for you* it is by design.
*maybe try finding your local dojo, and maybe ask for a chat or email them. They may accommodate and try not push you about it until you feel more comfortable.
Sorry about the essay lol, hope this helps ❤
You aregood player
Iplaykendo
I like how you not push people away during that contact because that is not nice.
These guys are fast
Totally unrelated, but how tall is Max? I always imagined you to be pretty tall, Andy, and I'm surprised to see someone practicing Kendo that's a head taller than you are... not that there's anything wrong with that.
Hi Ron,
Max is very tall indeed, however, I am actually not so tall either. I am just 173cm, so I often face opponents much taller than I am :)
Thanks for watching!
All the best,
Andy
Oh we're about the same height! Haha. Fancy that. In the Philippines, that's actually considered above average. We're an island people, so lots of short kendoka here. Heh.
Incidentally, if you don't mind me asking, are there any special considerations to have when you're doing Jigeiko or Kirikaeshi with someone shorter than you are? I always seem to have trouble hitting them since I end up with my strikes having no power or simply just falling short of hitting them. I have no problems with partners within half-a-head taller or shorter than I am though.
Thanks for your reply! To be totally honest, I don't really take any specific considerations for doing keiko with someone either taller or shorter, except for adjusting the height of my wrists and elbows at the point of striking. If you are finding your strikes are weak, or falling short, I recommend examining your footwork, perhaps you are not really launching yourself from your lower body as effectively as you possibly could. Just an idea :)
Thanks!
Andy
Thanks for the insight, Andy! I'm relatively new to Kendo, so I'm still a bit overwhelmed by the info I get from our dojo, and just wanted to get thoughts from someone who's had a different experience than I have. Not many Kendoka outside our club to exchange ideas with, unfortunately. Kendo is relatively new here.
I really appreciate what you do here, Andy. Always something to learn from this channel, both from the comments and the video. Keep up the awesome work! :D
I like this aport its swinging sticks and yelling what could go wrong
how i figured out that different clubs or nations have different techniques:
me *a beginner*: *does a leaping men for the 5th time*
my senpai: NO! you do not leap you move forward!
The volume is too low.
Wait, kendokas in japan are under 21? Why do adult japanese people dont want to practice kendo?
Andy I like your videos but 140 Euro for 3 shinai it's super expensive!!!!!
Hi, thank you for your message. I am glad you enjoy my videos. I am sorry you feel that our Shinai our expensive - however, I disagree. You may be able to find cheaper Shinai from other places - but I believe that you cannot find *the same quality* Shinai at the same price when you also account for shipping (all orders are free shipping on KendoStar.com) and taxes (which are included when purchasing from within Europe). Further, as actual Kendo practitioners, we make a point at KendoStar to only offer good quality equipment, that Kendoka can rely on - we don't offer lower quality, cheap products that you can find at other stores, as it is against our business philosophy to do so. For the quality of products and service that we offer, I believe that we offer much better value than any of our competitors, and it appears that our customers agree.
Hope that helps,
Andy
Max Davies is so hot
I'm an idiot
I like Kendo but the yelling is annoying and cringey..
Bad anime
