  • Dragon Age is a fantastic game, easily one of the best of its generation. However, no game is perfect, and the Dragon Age franchise is no exception. Indeed, BioWare conceals a number of more monotonous moments and frustrating quests beneath it that are anything but exciting and immersive. While many of Dragon Age's missions take us on exciting adventures, and the majority of the experience is fantastic, what we'll be discussing today is anything but. Relax as we look at five of the Dragon Age franchise's most annoying quests and moments.

    I think the reason why the Hinterlands was just so overwhelming was because of the massive size of the area, combined with the sheer amount of quest/collectibles content that spanned from Level 1 until level 15; The biggest game level range on any of the maps in Thedas.

    I actually think the shards have something to do with Solas, like he's the one who initially hide them ages ago or something - hear me out; since it takes someone who has been completely severed from the fade to recognize them - when of his time the Fade was everywhere and everything - it was a very clever hiding place. Then the actual temple being Solasan - The Temple of Pride. And Solas's comments of the temple being warded to instill that feeling of dread until the person unlocking it is proven worthy... kind of like greeting/blessing to access his sanctuary/ hidden compound in trespasser... I think there is a reason they were made so stand out, an entire quest chain completely separate from the main story... If nothing else, it's sus.

    @loonyman83 Před rokem +2

    fade is DA:O is definitely a slog... that skip the fade mod is a divinie blessing upon us mere mortals. The Deep roads while annoying isn't so bad... i've basically got it down to a science where I can complete the whole quest in like 2 hours so not the worst thing in the world. If you don't like it or are still struggling then there is also a mod to skip it as well lol. I didn't really have any issues with the Bone Pit... my main problem with DA:2 is that everything starts feeling samey and repetitive. Guess that's to be expected for a game they made in 18 months lol. The Hinterlands definitely was too crowded... I mean you had the main quests of meeting Mother Gisselle, Reaching the Redcliffe Mages and helping out the Outskirts village (not technically a main quest but feels like it). On top of that you have Fade Rifts, Shards, obtaining mounts, establishing watchtowers, clearing out possessed wolfs, a cult holed up in a castle, a long landmark quest, a demonic ritual in a house, and so on and so on... The worst part about DA:I is that there are entire sections of the game you can completely ignore and it won't affect the story at all. The Emerald Graves? No impact on the story. The Hissing Wastes? No impact on the story. The Exalted Plains? Only if you care about Vivienne. The Forbidden Oasis? Only if you care about getting some elemental resistence and some materials for crafting runes. Essentially DA:I just has too much fluff and not enough substance... the good bits are AMAZING, but all the side stuff is rather forgettable.

    @DogFlamingoXIII Před rokem +1

    I really liked the Fade part in Origins. I was only disappointed that we never got to tell Morrigan that we got to shapeshift and try to bond with her over it.
    The Hinterlands were so bountiful in missions, because it was intended to be the first zone and wanted to offer a full range of things you could do at any skill level, many being quick fetch quests.
    I really liked The Deep Roads. It really helped you better understand the reasons the dwarves will struggling so hard and why they generally had less sympathy about helping the surfacers in The Blight.
    I loved The Bone Pit quests. They were always big things to fight that were challenging and fun.
    I felt that the Dragon Age games were all pretty fair and easy in combat, except for a couple of rare exceptions (usually in the DLC, where they became challenging), so I don't really understand the people who couldn't get past the combat in regular quests.
    The fetch quests did make a lot of DA:I feel like an MMORPG that you were playing alone. I feel like a lot of the things got totally wasted, because people just ignored them. I really loved that they were there, because when I really wanted to spend time fully diving into a game (like at the beginning of COVID), it gave me a lot to do, but if I didn't want to do it, I could just skip it.

    The biggest problem Inquisition has is the bloated maps. Just using the Hinterlands as an example, did we really need a Bandit fortress to the southwest? Or a Andrastian cult in the southeast? The Hinterlands should’ve been that small opening village, the forests full of rebel mages and templars, Dennet’s estate, and Redcliffe. Cut the map in half and you’ve got a much better experience on your hands.

  • @Avyrsoul

    I remember playing Inquisition for the first time and reaching the Hinterlands, i thought "Damn, is the entire game this tedious?". It was many years before i would actually push past it. I probably could have skipped most of it, but i wanted the extra experience and power. What actually inspired me to get through it was my friend. We both had interest in the series itself and neither of us had played it. He showed me Mass Effect so i decided i'd show him Dragon Age.
    I tried to start with Origins but i hated the gameplay so much so i decided to start with Inquisition. Finishing that inspired me to go back to Origins/Awakening and play through all of them chronologically to get the bits i wanted to see in Inquisition. Origins has great story, but the gameplay had me grinding me teeth by the end. Currently on Dragon Age 2 now, and i'm enjoying it so far.

    @suprizeoptomist4680 Před rokem

    The trick to the Hinterlands is that you're not supposed to clear the whole map all at once. You technically can, but large sections of the map are intended to be too OP for the player and later quests will send you further into the area as the game progresses. Once you've completed the early game quests that took you there innthe first place, you're supposed to leave, complete other quests elsewhere, then return as needed for further quest completion.
    ...or you can pull up your big boy panties and power level through most of it until you hit the parts that are sealed off with barriers until later in the game. Either way, it's up to you, but following the quest journal (conveniently marked with level recomendations) is the easiest way to go.

    The main part of the Fade quest(DAO) that makes it feel tedious for me is the fact that once you leave the fade, you can’t return. If you miss some of the magical fonts or essences or even some of the codex entries, there’s no going back. Whenever doing the Fade quests, I’m always keeping a list of which codex entries and which fonts and essences I’ve collected and it feels more akin to a chore than fun.

    My biggest complaint about the hinterlands is that you wouldn't be able to complete in one go due to some quests being a higher level. Like some fade rifts that were way beyond my character level. So you are forced to return at a later level and then just steamroll through

    I think the devs made the hinterlands large with many quests on purpose. The purpose being to impress. It was their first attempt at large open world areas. So the Hinterlands had to give a good first impression. Look how big this area is, look how rich in activities it is etc. Btw the thing I found tedious in DAI was picking elfroot 😁

    So I decided to dust off my copy of inquisition this weekend and give it another go. I was one of the ones that got stuck in the hinterlands. I I am old and have years of gaming experience told me that I risked locking myself out of content if I "moved on" to different content. As a lover of all bioware games inquisition did itself a huge disservice with its quests and area setup if it could not get long time gamers like me to understand that it would be ok for me to leave before I did everything.

    Thanks for the vid! :) Though some might disagree with me, one of my favourite games ever was Dragon Age 2. I have played it probably close to 100 times now and the responsiveness and ease of play still amaze me. Dragon Age Inquistion? I was excited as hell when it was first released, downloaded it and played it exactly one time. Once. Call me old-fashioned but it was far less appealing than the predecessors and IMO, far too complicated.

    Another one I'd consider for this list is the Blood Mage hideout in Denerim back in DAO. Straight up combat stomp through a long dungeon full of blood mages. I don't even think the quest rewards were all that good either?

Just go everywhere you can, then you’ll slowly unlock all the forms and back track go everywhere possible and you get HUGE rewards that really help nightmare difficulty. Idk I liked the concept it’s super easy bc the forms and it has great rewards. I wish you could exit it tho, it’s nice to go back to camp to mentally recollect then head back out.

    I actually loved the Fade. It's meant to be disorienting and confusing; it's literally the first time the mage has to face it, and the fade constantly changes. You are a mouse running around a giant Maze and the demons are all chasing you. It wasn't supposed to be straightforward and is meant to be dreamlike and confusing. Even if you do figure out the mechanics to fighting the demons, that's also lore-friendly, because Mages are supposed to know how to deal with demons; that's what they learn.
    Same for the Deep Roads. You are a Warden. You should definitely expect to face tons of darkspawn down there. In fact, that's the only time I felt anytime that the Deep roads were well represented. The next two games made it simple to go through, although at least with Dragon Age 2, there was a repercussion with the sibling getting sick. Dragon Age Inquisition made darkspawn seem way too much like any old generic mob, and not the Thedas-unifying threat to existence that they actually are.
    Spot on with the hinterlands and the shards though. I definitely got stuck my first game through and almost quit, as I was sick of them.

    The Fade in origins was one of my favorite Dragon Age experiences. Something I hate about games in general is NPCs talking about how difficult a thing is & then you get past it lickity split. Not the Fade people tell you how dangerous & draining the fade is trapping everyone of it's victims & only those strong willed survive as inevitably the demons pounce on those who have been witled down. The Fade tried me, not gonna lie, but I love how deeply it emerges you, into it, I blame the Fade for my love of from software games, even though I completely suck at them 😅

    I actually don't mind the Hinterlands, and it's definitely not an area I try to complete right away due to higher level enemies I can't manage until later. Honestly it's not that bad if you're mindful of what quests are possible at your current level. Some quests are also just best left for later when Skyhold becomes your base as more things open up in the Hinterlands near the higher level areas and then you can do that area pretty much all at once with less difficulty. I think part of the reason you are continuously brought back to the Hinterlands is it's a connection to Ferelden and the first game since you the Hinterlands provides you with Redcliffe Village, the only Origins place you get to return to.

The deep roads was fun because I like combat at the time I was good at combat system used in DAO. I can see how Hinterlands could be a problem for new players I always came back at a later time at a higher level to deal with it and would do it in small bursts at a time. Over all good video and good points.
