How to CQB and clear rooms alone

  • Former Green Beret and GRS contractor Mike Glover goes over the fundamentals of single-man close quarters battle (CQB).
We've all seen it - the sexy CQB videos with full kit. That has its place, but as a civilian, it's not grounded in reality based training. More often than not, you're going to be alone with a pistol.

Bro, you have no idea. I have sort of been on both sides of this coin. I was a street cop before 9/11 happened and then I became an Air Marshal(retired now). Not that I was an "operator", but I was initially trained by those guys and have had them as co-workers. And had continuous specialized training during my career. Back in '01 there was virtually zero street cop advanced training. My eyes were opened up to a whole different world of tactics. All we ever knew as cops back then was take cover behind the car door or trunk and wait for a shootout. I also know it's impossible for departments to train as much it takes to reach this(or near) level. I look back on the ignorant(lack of training) situations I had been as a cop, compared to what I know now and I wonder how I stayed alive. Unfortunately cops have to take extra training on their own time, but fortunately there are guys like Mike out there who make info available.
If I were working the street today, I would get together with some like minded co-workers and have youtube "training parties" every month for a day and practice these things. Stay safe.

I'm Seattle PD though so not sure about smaller departments. You shouldn't be clearing buildings without a back up Officer unless of a extreme scenario where preservation of life is a must. Sounds like your department may be lacking on safety if you're clearing houses by yourself in my humble opinion.

A couple of advanced subjects he didn’t cover:
    1) The first time a pistol goes off, X amount of bad guys now know you’re there.
    2) After that, rooms you previously cleared, might no longer be cleared.
    3) Floor debris/types are your enemy. Here his shoes/boots squeak? Slow deliberate movements. Situational/environmental awareness is imperative!!!
    4) Taking a knee is humble. Don’t be afraid to drop to one knee. This deliberate movement might give you the edge in a shootout. He’s going to be adjusting his aim. You already know where to shoot.
    5) This isn’t a video game. Depending on the building materials (in this case a residential home) you might be able to shoot through a wall to get to a hardened target behind cover. Think outside the box.
    6) Just because you have a suppressor doesn’t make you silent!!!😂
    7) Solo CQB is the most dangerous thing you can do. There’s a reason we operate in teams!!!
    8) G’luck and have a gud’n.

We also have a 4k square foot house including the basement so I would want a 2nd shooter withe as we have lots of opposing doors. I go to clear one and get shot in the back solo, but with a 2nd man I'm more or less all right. I'll clear while he maintains rear security, them join me in clearing if the room is big enough or has closets or doors that need to be opened to cleared. One opens the door and the second clears said space. We also know the layout of our home like the back of our hands haha so it flows seamlessly

Hello Robert. First and foremost, thank you for having stepped up to do such a dangerous job for your community. A retirement well earned I'm sure. I'm retired military and supporter of LE . I have a concern which I hope you can clear up for me.
As of late, I have noticed an upward trend of LOD deaths involving ambush during disturbance/domestic calls/serving warrants. Most recently the tragic LOD death of Deputy Sheriff William Petry of the Floyd County Sheriff's Office, Kentucky as well as Capt Ralph Frasure and Officer Jacob Chaffins, both of the Prestonsburg Police Dept. Even a K-9 by then name of Drago was killed in this encounter. All shot and killed in the same incident.
If you wouldn't mind sharing, what do you feel are the biggest dangers officers face as well as any fatal errors officers make during these types of encounters. Is there anything you may have noticed in the incidents you have reviewed that raise any red flags/concerns about the type of training LEOs are receiving or lack there of? Tactics being used or not used? Your reply would be greatly appreciated Robert. Thank you.

(@@EddieLeal ) So many Law Enforcement Agencies are broke, meaning our regular training, and specified tactics are almost void nowadays. Ever heard the saying, you practice like you play? It's so very true. It's just not there nowadays. Most Agencies so short staffed nowadays, guys are mandated to work 56-70 hour weeks. It's insane, guys are exhausted and lives are being lost. Retirements or resignations are at a all time high. Officers are so scared to do their jobs anymore, they are worried about making a mistake, as a result being brought up on charges by the Bureaucrats! Officers hesitating to Police the way they were taught and trained, or through all the experience they gained through their careers has came to almost a complete halt. This is exactly why so many LEOs are being killed. Its sad, the politicians are now running Law Enforcement..

This is really good stuff for those watching but have never done this before. I was a LEO for 16 years with most of my career in a urban county in Georgia, we had a really good training division. I have attended SWAT schools which were awesome for tactics. At one point in my career I was clearing 2-5 houses a day because of the foreclosure from the housing collapse and people breaking into them. Get used to moving the gun in and out from your body, you will need that skill. If you are wearing body armor keep your front square to the threat so if bad guy shoots the armor catches it, is no armor get used to turning your body to make for a thinner smaller target. Good stuff with this video, I am going to share it with a buddy who still teaches tactics and firearms for a small department.

I had to clear my house the other night in my boxers at zero dark thirty. It was less fun than I'd imagined, but at least I'm somewhat familiar with the fundamentals of it.
I was a cop for a while and the the first thing I did was clear a house. Clearing unfamiliar houses/structures is not overly fun. Even for such a small town force, such as mine, I was doing this at least twice a week.

Excellent content. Very helpful. This is the fourth time viewing and I saw something new each time. Also enjoy your dry humor. Keep up the good work.
