Not tying to be a jerk or disagree with this guy but a little tip is to drop your board instead of throwing it. If you drop it, and hop on it after taking one more stop, you will go much farther. It makes a huge difference. Trust me. Good luck everyone!

3rd Gen Acura TL thinking same thing
Ok thanks I'm going to try skimboarsing for the first time soon can you tell me a good board to get because I just have a cheap 20 dollar store bought board
@@blazintowers3482a DB skimboard if your Are most to flatland
blazintowers EXO is a great beginner board
Thanks! Always fun making skim videos... and lots more to come :)
Learning to drop step is the most efficient way to ride - actually we will be doing a video about this. However it is usually too difficult for most people to try when they are first learning. The less you have to chase your board, the sooner you get on it, the more momentum and speed you will have. I definitely recommend learning how to drop step once your comfortable on the board. We will work on having a video out for that soon.
To all the haters who say he sucks and this is a bad demo.... this is obvs meant to be a BEGINNER lesson - to get ppl skimming and stoked right away. Yes, doing the one-step drop is the best method, whether wave or flatland (although they do require slightly diff techniques). But that is a more ADVANCED method. If someone just wants to learn how to get on a board (flatland), and get a ride in for their first few times... this is a great lesson.
Also... I've met and skimmed with him. He does NOT think he's "the shit". He's one of the most humble, kind, friendly, healthy and active people you will ever meet. He's a genuinely good dude. #stopthehate
You made it look like it's so easy! Thanks, buddy!
Thank you! Very informative and demonstrative! We bought a skimboard late in the summer and plan to use it next summer in Seattle, and on the coast! Seems a good intro into surfing too, which I plan on trying later on after I've gotten skimboarding down.
Thank-you! Hopefully you get to use your new board lots next year. There are some really great places in Seattle/Tacoma area. The balancing on the board is similar to surfing - just remember to keep your knees bent and your core center of gravity centered. Cheers!
Great video, can't wait to start.
The board he is riding is a Kayotics and is an excellent board for flatland skimboarding. Zap makes excellent boards for wave riding. You really need a different board for each style. If you have waves nearby and plan to skim that style, then definitely a Zap board will be great for that. That's great you've been skimming for 3 years and have been getting better at it! Your drop and landing are the most critical to learn. I'm sure you'll be charging waves very soon!!
Thanks so much!! This is really helpeful for begginers like me!
I was taught to walk onto the board, u dont jump on it. Maybe its different for the oceans cause the water is moving.
The walk into it method is for going out to waves but its still good because it converts the momentum to the board better than the jump into it
So that means it’s totally ok to do the walk method and maybe even better than the jump into it
Thank you so much! This really helped! I'll try it next time I go to the beach ;) definitely
This was the easiest video ever! Fank You
Helped me alot. Thanks!!
No problem! You are in one of the best places for skimboarding :)
Awesome! Always great to hear :)
At 2:10 in the video is so funny. The guy in the background tho. I'm am dying.
Asian Jess omg thank you😂😂😂
Thank you very much I'm a beginner I bought my board today ur so amazing at skimming I'll try to go to the beach once again thanks
Hey SmoshPit1, it depends on how you think you want to ride (long and fast or getting into tricks). I'm a big fan of bi-directional skimboards (both nose and tail are the same) - I find them really easy to maneuver. A more flexible board (DB) will give you more "pop" and can be easier to spin when doing tricks (but that will take time to learn) while a sturdier board (Kayotics) tends to be easier to control and is better in wind. Hope this helps.
Awesome - we're working on some more videos to come out soon! Cheers :)
It helped me a lot !!!! Thank you!
I have only done skateboarding I cant wait to skim board one day!
2:16 Someone teach this man how to drop
Jack Herbert ikr
Well done!
How hard is it to ride a high end wooden board (like a DB Standard Proto) on waves? Mainly plan to do flatland, but will occasionally take trips to the beach.
Not really sure what you are talking about... Trever is an excellent skimboarder and he gets on properly for flatland riding in this video.
Run, jump, fall on my ass and get scratched by the sand. XD
That was me today
+GTRGIRL28 04 I the funny thing is falling kind of helps lol
Is that a wooden board you have in the video, or a better one like a Zap or something? Right now, i have a wooden board & it does alright, but it's not too fast. I'll be buying a Zap board soon. Since practicing the last 3 summers, i can skimboard alot better now & am getting faster little by little, the more i practice. I'd love to be able to ride a wave one day back to the shore, that'd be awesome!
Yes thank you guys.I subscribed.
I had time off of work yesterday & drove to Fort Fisher,NC & spent the day strictly skimboarding. Later in the day, I was like u said, charging the waves & riding further. Saw some there throwing their skimboard out, then running & jumping on it. I heard that's a big no-no to ride like that as u tend to wipe out more. I myself run, drop,& skim. I wipeout once in a while, not much. My balance is better getting on/riding the board that way.
nice video thanks!
Thanks for the tips. Simple but effective. Recommendations on choosing a board?
Hi @Nscalers Club, I do know the store Target (and they actually just opened in Canada this month!). I know the types of boards they would sell and I would stay far away from them! Even if you only intend to skimboard a little bit, cheap boards that are mass produced like that will quickly deteriorate, bust or just won't perform and your rides won't be as good as they could be. For wave riding, you will want a foam core board such as Exile, Victoria, Zap, Slotstik - all good boards.
Hi Pj Jacob,
I had a look at the video you are talking about - that is called tow-skimming or bungee-skimming. It's an easy way to get a feel for the movement of the board, but you won't learn how to actually skim. You need to learn how to throw it and land also.
Are you trying to learn wave riding or are you learning along the shore (flatland)? Our video here is meant to teach flatland.
It also helps to know what style of board you are riding.
awesome thanks for the help. Corbin travels
nice job
I live in the US so we have a place called target ( not sure if u had a target in Canada) spits place when you can get clothes bicycles archery stuff shoes and yes skimboards. Do u think that the boards there would be crappy. I'm probably going to do more beach skimming than flatland skimming since I am living in Florida thanks
You might be able to find a used one for that, but a decent board will cost you about $150-$200. You can check out the skim classifieds section at the Skim Community website - sometimes people sell used boards there.
Nice vid
How thin can it be can you skim wet sand with like 0.5 inches of water?
Any videos on how to skim going into the waves?
That board is a Kayotics and is about $189. A decent wooden skimboard - for flatland riding - will cost you anywhere from $150-$200
It's not so important which foot you land on when flatland riding. Most people actually land front foot first in this style. But when riding waves, you are right that it is more efficient to land back foot first, although many people do land with their front also.
Thanks you very much!!!!!
Awesome tutorial video. contrary to what I was thinking, I actually didn't do so bad on the beach just now with my board.
I like how you broke it down to the basics step by step. Good stuff.
Also, shameless advertisement - if you want to experience what the 2017 full solar eclipse was like, check out the vlog I posted on my channel. If you can like and share it too that'd be great and I'll return the favor!
Alright thanks man. Good video, I'm gonna apply your techniques outside in about an hour while I'm out here on the beach.
I like that Pacman ghost you got on the grip of your board
Do you need to be a fast runner to do this?
is sandfish a good skimboard brand?
where was this, this is perfect for skimming, what state?
its near vancouver
Has it helped you with your skimboarding Ricardo?
Could you tell me the price of that skimboard more or less? Thanks
hey nice job, i have an instructional video too but for wave riding!
What type of board is that
do u need grips for your feet
So i'm a beginner, but i cant skimboard that much because i don't live near the sea or any ''low water'' places. I saw a skimboard online for 27,- and it looks really good.
But i'm considering if this is a right board for me.
I'm 180cm and the skimboard is 104cm so they recommend it for me.
Am i doing good buying this or not? And thanks for the video, really helpfull! :)
wave zone are cheap beginner boards, better are zap Victoria, and exile I own a exile
+477Elite skimboard are better on high tide steep hills riding the shorebreak and the best board is exile and this is not skimboarding this is running on wood and doing a crappy 90 degree shuv it and falling
But I have a full wooden board and no fiberglass should I get one with fiberglass or just a better board
fiberglass and a pad and be sure to use wax
mrs palmers surf wax is sufficient
zap is the board i have and it comes up to my chest that is where your should aim for length/hieght wise
im ride with my right foot at the back of board what is that name of ride?
john Aldrin's regular broski
Glad it will be helpful for you! Feel free to ask us any questions :) Happy Skimming!
i got a question. I want to know if it matters wich foot you put first on the board ?
You most likely want the front foot first
The KrOOb however you feel comfortable
Nice, thank you :)
Thank you so much- that is really helpful.
We will definitely be making some instructional wave videos in the near future. Where we are based it's all flatland, however we are working with some other wave riders to produce wave videos.
I thought this was an excellent instructional!
Okay so what if I'm goofy footed but right handed, do I still throw it like that? Because it seems a little unnatural
I'm the same like that. Just position your self however you feel the most comfortable
+Victor Cuen P.S. TEAM INSTINCT!!!!!
Yes, this was filmed at Spanish Banks, Vancouver, BC.
I just got one and it is all wood. Do I need to put that grip stuff on it?
you could put that foam or you could use wax
u can use wax or buy traction pads just go to any surf shop they will have them
Or just rub sand on it or just leave it
U live in Canada??
i really want a db board or something like that but i cant afford one. can i get a good skimboard with good pop for 70 bucks anywhere?????
Hello Vancouver :)
U drop then step with back foot with the one step start and not jump on the board which pushes the board down and slows momentum
Thanks a lot this really helped me
how do you fall without hurting yourself?
number6 tuck your elbows and roll! throwing your hands out is natural, but it's an easy way to hurt your wrists
I am goofy but i throw the board with my right arm. Is that okay?
You want to drop the bord bc you lose speed if you throw it
I am not the same type of skimer as you because I do the wave riding kind and what we do is run full speed drop the board then step on it back foot first
thanks this video helped alot
mine is 20 bucks and its very good
Top Time square mine is 35 :/
Mime 20 and it skims perfect ly
Can u even get waves tho
I'm goofy footed but I toss my board regular with my right hand on the back...crazy
Same here
Tom Sweeney same here lol
same here :D
Same here!
+gino cataluna going to be hard but if you can try to match up it will help in the long run repetition
What's the difference between a cheap skimboard and a good one?
G Harter You make the difference
G Harter Cheap (Just wood) breaks easy. And doesnt go as far. Good one (Carbon fiber, eglass, ect.) is ment for riding waves back intro the shore and shit
you get what you pay foe
thanks bruh
Ron Jon's skimboards are really for when you just learn how to skimboard..they are cheap and will break easily. If you wanna get a good intermediate board it will probably cost around 150-200$ for everything
well I am at the beach so this will be helpful
Tim Ladner bruh where is Daner (Dane)and Kyle? Lynch
These boards are more expensive but you can find some used ones too. Try searching forums, facebook skimboard groups or you can post a free Ad on SkimCommunity (.com) - (I would do all three). You should be able to find a good quality used board for an affordable price. You will be much happier with it than a cheap board from a cheap store.
I have friends that skim but I cant I don't know how this video will help me thnks plus I don't have to pull them on a bike look at the video im the kid rideing the bike here
trainedzombie the video is called..... bike boarding at vero beach plz look and tell me whT U THINK THXS
As long as it works for you.
Not sure about Ron Jon's boards in particular, but I've never seen a board under $99 that hasn't warped or broke in the first few rides. I wouldn't recommend it! You won't learn how to ride properly, you'll get frustrated and probably end up spending more money anyways because of having to replace the board.
Thanks, very clear class for beginers like me
does it matter if i have my nondominate hand on the back?
Not at all that's how I do it
copy & pasted comment, huh, Lucky?? heheh
Cozzy Internet what do u mean I was actually wondering about this
Lucky I saw ur same comment on a previous video..... nothing wrong with it :) I'm still new to it anyway; never tried on waves
Cozzy Internet oh ok cool
There are lots of good boards and lots of crappy ones - whatever you do, don't get a dollar store board or, like Trever said, you'll hate life haha. Do some research, ask around, and if you can, get out and try different ones... that is the best thing you can do because everyone likes different styles and brands.
don't you just hate it when people teach things the wrong way then people learn it this way and it's hard to break the habit
but what i hate more is a bunch of douche bags tearing someone else because said douche bag does nothing with his time but bitch about and lay around on his lazy ass,
+Tom Walton maybe you should make your own video instead of reading all these comments if you don't like them. Go buy a real skimboard and stfu.
+Tom Walton ur afucking idiot i skimboard surf play football basketball golf and tennis i literally never lay around cuz thtas depressing its just that u and the guy in this video are a bunch of fucking idiots
I agree he’s teaching everything wrong
Once u get good enough your supposed to drop and step
So imma fall a lot at Florida /Jacksonville beach lol
I go to cocoa beach
You do a one step
NP! :)
I run then drop, and slide, thats how i see most do it, all the chasing after the board seems unnecessary.
run jump fall backwards break my wrist twist and sit on my ankle twisting it
SORRY FOR THE MISS SPELLD words
\
Some random board from a surf or skate shop.
Go on with your bad self! Just don't leave your garbage in the ocean - or the ground... or anywhere but the garbage.
What if you have a $13.99 Ron Jon's Skimboard
