SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY BAND is the Human Juke Box and Jackson State is The Sonic Boom of the South without question. However one fact that wasn't mentioned in either of the videos that puts the whole argument to rest and clearly proves who was the originator. Back in the day a Southern Alum and former band member under the direction of Dr. Issac Greggs later became one of the directors at Jackson State. Paul Adams brought the overall Southern style and look to Jackson State. So it goes without saying that Southern is truly often imitated but not duplicated. So please check the real facts not fiction.

Grambling. Damn near everything you see from HBCU bands today, Grambling has done it already.
When you have the opportunity to visit the new AA museum in DC. Notice who’s honored under the same roof with Oprah, Rosa Parks, Eddie Robinson, Michael Jordan/Jackson, Harriet Tubman and a host of other larger than life legends. Dr. Isaac Greggs (Southern University’s Famed Legendary Band Director) the same guy who has more high schools and colleges imitating what he produced than any other. When we start seeing other bands imitated as much as Southern, then we can talk. Just stop stealing our shit. Just stop!

Last year, Juke fans were cracking on the Boom for Sanford getting zipped for having undocumented students in the band, not to mention ugly rumors about Boom members stealing(which were just that, rumors), and now Boom fans doing the same to the Jukebox for Haymer getting axed because of kickback accusations.
This is the reason why the BoomBox Classic is the MOST EPIC Band Rivalry in all of Band Season, and I can't wait for this year's blowfest!

So what's your point, it is a known fact that much of what is known today by HBCU bands was duplicated by either GSU or FAMU. To try and bash SU as a program that has stolen your identity is just wrong.I did not go to either school but i would not speak ill of neither in this tone because both are a symbol in their perspective community. Time will always produce change, so what it the overlay's were changed in color it only magnifies their uniform to what they see as impressive. The concept of having golden attached to their coats will never offend Grambling because Mr. Hutchinson created them for color contrast (old overlays were basically full black and red front but full red with black/gold trim backs)well before SU did theirs. This national bashing has to stop, just be proud we have witnessed some of the best musicianship by black youths in this country ever imagined.

Who ever you are, THANK YOU FOR THAT!! I remember the JSU-SU game in ‘87. I was the band in high school, and if I remember correctly, Liberty High Marching Band (Amite County, Mississippi) performed the pre-game show that year. We performed for several JSU-SU games, both in Jackson and Baton Rouge. Any-who, this video finally cleared up a few erroneous misconceptions about The Sonic Boom. I once remember hearing the announcer for Tennessee State say some outlandish BS, “now copy this JSU,” or something to that effect. Really? Who want a to copy anything TSU does? Really?

Old GSU, FAMU, JSU days of fame are over so just keep reaching & working at it & the Juke will keep setting the standards higher & higher! I love all HBCU bands but SU is one of the only bands that can compete with larger schools across this nation!

I don't usually comment on anything but I have to on this. The Jennifer Holiday song was performed by Jackson State first because they were the visitors in Baton Rouge. The lady from Jackson State had a big voice and sounded good. Southern's band did the same Jennifer Holiday song right after Jackson State because they were the home team. All on the same night, I was there and I remember.
Also why is everyone upset because Jackson State band uniforms have Columbia blue?
That's Jackson State if they want to wear Southern University's school color.
More like JSU reaches. We all know from JSU to Alcorn there has and always be a strong influence of SU. Jsu you invented nothing and duplicated everything from SU. I like JSU but I love SOUTHERN. The Human Jukebox has won every award (except the biased Sudler Trophy) and received every accolade a band can have. As Doc would say "often imitated never ever duplicated." Thee only truth in this video is about Michigan, never denied the influence. Dr. Davis marched in the MMB and brought that to Southern in the 60's. Overall we have a good rivalry and two great bands, but only one can be the champ, #SUHumanJukebox

@@upt123 You are STILL incorrect. Your statement was, Su has received every band award and that's NOT TRUE. JSU was enshrined into the NCAA Hall of Champions. Southern has not been inducted into the NCAA. There are a host of different magazines (such as Rolling Stone magazine) has listed JSU as the top Hbcu band and Su was not even on the list. Su has accolades, but not all of them. NCAA has yet to acknowledge you all as champs lol

Touche, however the Hall of Champions is a sports museum not explicitly for band. And for the record we have been acknowledged by the NCAA rating us number one in the nation and in a recent poll number two behind Ohio State on a list where we were the only HBCU involved. We happen to be in one of those museums as well it's called the African American Museum of Natural History. We can converse semantically forever but again I digress, see you on the 27th of October.

Honestly I do not see anything wrong with JSU wanting to be SU. The standard for all black schools in the swac for as band should go through the human jukebox, Jackson State have already fell in line.
