I have a 50th anniversary Z. It quickly became my favorite bike in the garage. Anxious to see how you like it.
XSR900 owner here, and I absolutely love it. I considered the z900, but I'm glad I went with the Yamaha. Sounds great with a proper full system as well. Just got a DNA air filter and hoping to dyno tune it in a month or two! Have fun with the bikes!

how often do you have to fill up? Only thing negative I see is the small tank capacity. It's got the same size tank as my Ninja 400 but with more than double the cc's lol

Yamaha broke the XSR900 visually, they can keep it, since looks is part of this product's purpose -- just get the MT-09 if you want the CP3. Z900RS all the way for this one.
You guys got my 2 favorite motorcycles on the market right now. From those 2, I would pick the Z900 RS .I like the looks better, the analog gages, and Kawasaki build quality.
Love the new XSR900! I too have noticed that they are hard to find. Hopefully the weather will be more cooperative.
I'm exited to hear your thoughts on these two bikes! I'm also in Colorado, and this year has indeed been brutal! this last summer I traded in my FJ-09 for a 2018 Z900RS. Was also considering the XSR, but as you know, made of Unobtainium... The RS though, hands down the looker, and has actually been my favorite bike I've ever owned! Looking forward to your adventures with these beauties!

WOW! That XSR900 is SHARP! I like that a LOT. Was not expecting to be that taken with it. Dang! That Z900 is SHARP as hell too! Damn guys, I totally envy you on this day. Shame your Ram2500 was converted into a camper truck huh? LOL So much for it being a useful "ranch/work" truck. Look forward to your ride reviews on these bikes! Do drag them and do what Kase said. lol Take a few road trips. Freeways and local and mountains if you can. I would take the Z900 over the XSR900... but that is a small margin of difference desire between the 2. 🙂
Excited to see these bikes more. Based on looks alone z900 > Mt09 but xsr900 > z900rs. I bought the 22' z900 in robotic white and absolutely love it. With the rs being detuned over 10hp and looking softer, I feel it's gonna fall short of the xsr. But.... Go kawi!!! I hope y'all love it. I'm also hoping this colorado snow will go away. I'm itching to ride so bad.

If you really want the retro look of the z900 but spend a fraction of the price just get a Honda 919. Phenomenal bike
I have an 04 and I absolutely love it , except rear shock , but overall so much fun and comfortable.

If you're more of a chill rider definitely go for the Z900RS. The XSR kinda tempts you to ride like a hooligan lol.

I was a fan of the first gen XSR900 but they lost me with this current version. I'm hoping to buy a Z900rs for the upcoming riding season.
Really hoping yamaha confirms the R9 this year, I absolutely love the CP3 in my old XSR900 because it's a hooligan motor and bike for sure. With a full akra system it sounds proper.
I'm hoping for the R9, as well. Probably going to have to go with the MT-09 in the meantime. I have put off moving up from the R3 for 3 years for a variety of reasons (mostly COVID-related). Put off the upgrade last year hoping for the R9. No go, right now. Thought about an Aprilia RS660, but no dealer even remotely close to where I live in Canada. Might have a look at the Z900 and the 890 Duke before I drop the cash though.
I bought an RS Cafe because that's what was available. I'd love to add an XSR to the stable alongside it
Too bad you couldn't get the Z900 RS SE. For starters, the black and yellow color combination is incredible, but then you also get upgraded brakes, wheels and suspension. Definitely worth upcharge if you are buying one.
I was really leaning into my next bike being an XSR900 but I honestly hate the way the new design looks. I’m all the way out on it even though I would love the tourqy CP2 engine.
I love the Z900RS style. When I grew up, that is what a motorcycle looked like. Plus, the Z1 900 took the crown from the Honda 750. Honda doesn't have a bike like this but, Kawasaki hit the mark. I recently owned a Honda 750 Custom. 4 carbs...cold blooded...the Z 900 RS has the look I want, but modern Fuel injection, no special carburetor saving fuel to search out, and such. I am currently comparing the Z with the Street Triple RS. I love the Triumph but, maintenance costs should be cheaper w/ the Kawee, no?

I have a 2021 mt09 and its my 2nd bike. Came from a klr650. a bit more power! lol
Everyone's constantly comparing these two, I just don't see the similarities at all. To me, the XSR is a sport-oriented neo-retro, kind of like a CB650R or CB1000R, while the Z900RS is more of a true retro with a focus on styling, more like a Speed Twin. To me, the XSR is just a less ugly MT09, which is exactly why I bought one.
Actually the xsr900 looks fantastic in black the new one that is.

I own the Z900RS and it is such an amazing bike except for one thing - it's just a bit too heavy and big for me. For that reason, I am going to sell it and get something lighter and smaller, but I am choked at the thought of selling it. Once it's moving it's totally fine, but when it's parked/stopped, it's a bit of a handful for me to push around. It's too tall and heavy, so I can't duck walk it anywhere, and the body of the bike is wide enough that even with shaving the seat down as much as I could, I still can't get my feet totally down. But I'm a lady rider who is not even 5'5" and ~ 115 lbs, so anyone taller and heavier than I am will have no issue with it whatsoever. It's so balanced and doesn't feel heavy at all when it's moving.
The XSR900 is a lot lighter apparently, but it's just so.... ugly compared to the Z900RS, imo. So that one is a total no-go for me for the looks department alone.
The R6 doesnt belong in a discussion about the R7. Different bikes, different use case.

Love both of theae bikes. The Z900RS is better looking but I would buy the XSR900 because it has a quick shifter and it is less expensive.
I dont think it is. I guess it depends on your love for 70s etc. The xsr dosnt try to look old
It's sportier and modern and esp in the black its cool as cucumber. Each to there own. They really shouldn't be compared. The 900RS is more in the Bonneville and REnfied genre. I don't know why they get compared, really. Xrs is on another level handling and preformance wise.
i would argue that the Monster 950, 890 duke and BMW F900R also compete directly with the Z900, street triple RS and MT-09, i can't quite put my finger on why Alex keeps saying that there are only three bikes on that category since all six of those bikes are available in the US.

The Black xsr900 reminds me of Vader's TIE fighter.
Personally I think the XSR is...not a good looking bike. I much prefer the 900RS. Looking forward to seeing more of both though!

The seat looks horrendous.
Discontinuing black version would be a massive mistake, not everyone enjoys flashy colors, not everybody wants to look like a rolling energy drink can. I personally would never buy a blue bike, and that black is something I'm actually considering. Saying this, if they discontinue it I'd never buy this model.

z900rs all time... I am too old for hooligan shenanigans, so more retro less electronics and less power... just don't like much those radiator sidewalls...would change them for something black. IT is the worse from the Z900rs aesthetic. for the new XSR900 I don't even know where to start... looks like a "Cafe Racer" done by someone in their parent's garage... with the lights out.
Alex, you can't be a motorcycle reviewer and make comments like, "the Yamaha R7 is a do everything machine." It's a freaking sport bike. Period. Will you be removing the Yamaha R7 from your "breaking news" at the top of your CZcams webpage? It's been there more than a year.

The Yamaha cant be called a retro,because I've never seen an xs look any thing like that. The kwaka is my choice, just on looks. Ive had an xs and a gsx and the gsx was a much better bike. Cheers

You need an enclosed trailer to make your transport life tidy and simple. The Kawi looks much nicer, mostly because the XSR missed the mark by not using analog gauges and that seat is absolutely the most hideous seat design in the history of motorcycling...pathetic.
