2017 Ford E-450 6.8L V10 Trition Review-Uhual 15ft

  • Here is a review of a 2017 Ford E-450 with the V10 Triton (305hp/420 ft-lbs). I ended up driving this rig 700 miles, so I was able to get a pretty good feel of how it runs. Over that 700 miles, I got exactly 7 mpg on mostly flat terrain. The total scale weight of the truck, trailer and load is 17,500 lbs. I was able to maintain 70-75mph on flat ground, but any type of slight incline would have this truck dropping gears in a hurry. It did not have the torque to maintain speed on the hills, and dropped often below 50 mph. This truck was very rev happy and really wanted to stay within its power band which is around 4500 rpms even at cruising speed. This made the cab an extremely loud place to be, and a normal conversation between driver and passenger not possible. The V10 is running '90s technology and is really reaching its end in service life with more efficient options on the market. IT's really marketed as a diesel alternative, but doesn't perform as such. The overall maintenance is hit or miss with Uhual, as pointed out in the video with the tire alignment causing the tires to go bad on one side. The pickup dealer didn't really care but I expressed the concern to the drop off dealer and they pulled it from service to get new tires. Uhual is not a customer friendly company as much as they try to persuade customers they are. If they were going for customer friendly company they would (a) equip trucks with cruise control (b) use trucks that feature more fuel efficient engines (whether diesel or next generation gas truck engines) (c) Renew their fleet at much quicker intervals (d) Ensure all employees are knowledgeable on trailer and truck hookup (e) Adjustable mirrors (f) Make the marketed truck size the actual full length of the usable box, not including the overhang.

    There are plastic covers on the end of the mirror arms that protects the mirror adjustment. Use a small screw driver to remove it. There is an Allen screw that you can loosen to adjust the mirror. Once set tighten it to set it. Don't forget to replace the cover.

    Thanks for this video. I just rented same setup from Florida to New Hampshire. I pretty much agree with your observations. I got 9.0 mpg towing a 3,500 pound car. The E Series is ancient but I was impressed with the way tow-haul mode effectively used engine braking to slow the truck down. The cab was noisy but it got the job done without any drama.

    Funny thing. Those mirrors actually do adjust. U have to move the whole unit. I rented one and took it back immediately and they laughed and told me that I wasn’t doing it right. Essentially, u just have to tug firmly on them. They won’t break

    One thing to keep in mind is these trucks are usually loaded and most of the time towing a vehicle behind. The short wheel base and cargo load + trailer tow causes the front end to become some what light as its working and creates a front end camber out problem. That causes the outer wear on the outside of the tires.

      Gotta love that Twin I Beam suspension. Great design for the 1960s but Ford really needs to get rid of it. It's still currently in use on brand new E450s and similar.

    I've just finished a 700 mile trip over Rocky mountain with a 26' uhaul at 5.9mpg, and agree with you, no cruise control, it's really exhausting! Watching your video since I'm going on another trip with a 15' and an auto transport, so seems not much of good news on CC either!
    But for the side mirror, I think you will need to use a lot lot lot more strength to adjust them like I did on the 26' one, I assume they are so tight in consideration of the vibration on the road, but once you get it adjusted, they stay there all the way.

    One thing uhaul should do to their 15ft trucks is add more marker lights on the side.uhaul there nice trucks,and comfortable seats.if Penske could get rid of the bench seats and install 3 air ride seats that will be nice and Penske should add more reflective material on the trucks for more visibility.thanks for making these videos I learn something new about these rental trucks Everytime I watch your videos 👍👍👍👍👍👍

      Penske's 12's and 16's do have double bucket seats, the 26's that are Rental spec are driver air seat, double bench (lord knows why, but i end up driving anyways for just thay reason). There are very, very few off lease trucks in the rental fleet, but only a few of those have opted for fixed passenger bucket seat). The old International Durasters with hydraulic brakes (thank god I haven't seen one of those in eons, they can't stop for shit) with three person bench seats are (to my knowledge) almost completely retired. I have yet to see the new MV's, but i have a hunch they will be driver air, double bench spec.
      As well, Penske's trucks (being required to follow DOT law, how uhaul manages to elude dot enforcement is beyond me) are marked, lit, and DOT reflective taped exactly as is required and mandated, no more, no less.

    So glad I found this video. Pretty much everything you said was on point with my experience (rented one a week ago). To my shame I didn’t realize it was a v10. I find it interesting how the exhaust was loud given it’s a closed system and the muffler was quiet enough. I’d have to disagree about the engine being loud though because i intentionally listened to it through the firewall under load and could barely hear it. Heat from the engine bay was also nicely isolated. The carpeting by the firewall was indeed a bit warm but not as much as I would have expected from a design with the engine partly inside the cabin. By the way, would you happen to know who builds these vehicles for these companies? Also, in your wide experience with these trucks, does UHaul’s “gentle ride” claim have any real meaning as far as plushness of the actual ride quality goes?

      Uhual actually builds their own trucks. Body wise they are built pretty well out of the aluminum. The ride isn't terrible. It's not as nice as an air ride truck but I would say it's nicer than like a spring ride International from penske. Although they have swapped a number of there stuff to air ride.

      @@crazyjdkid Thank you for replying. I'm really interested how they mod the suspension to make them ride nice. When you say they build them themselves, did you mean Uhaul actually has their own shops, or do they farm out the job and have them built to specs? Haven't rented from Penske yet but your statement that Uhauls ride better is even more confirmatory for me that they're doing something to those suspension systems. I've been trying to research about this on the web but you're the only person I see who has the most knowledge about the subject.

    nice vid :) i passed a bigger Uhual on the highway a few days ago, it looked the same as urs but with a bigger box. the truck sounded like that 1 truck from the movie called maximum overdrive...lol

    The only downside of Penske is that they limit their trucks to 77 mph. The cruise control is limited to 70mph

    I have to take one of these 700km through and out of the mountains and into the prairies with a 3500 pound car on a trailer. Any tips/advice? I live in a very small town so this is our only option.

      You be fine, give your self plenty of room and don't rush it. Make sure to inspect your truck when you pick it up for any damage or anything not safe. On the highway you will hardly notice the trailer, just be careful in the city with turns and take your time.

    I'm glad they still use the Econoline style on the bigger trucks. Also, how long has the Triton 6.8 been around? Since 1999? I don't like the new start-up sound of the Triton.

    transits are less reliable just sold mine with 100k mile and had nothing but problems. before that i had a e350 with a v10 and ran it up to 350k miles no problems, ended up buying a e450 because of reliablilty.

    The mirrors actually are adjustable. You adjust the whole unit. Not the glass.

      All the Uhual trucks I have had you could never adjust them. I have put a lot of force on them as well, they didn't budge.

    It's interesting how they're still using the same front clip design that they've had for the past 10+ years. You'd think they would upgrade to a 17+ front end.

      You would think! This chassis is at the end of its production life I do believe. A lot of the bigger operators like UHual and a lot of motorhome builders are trying to drag it out as long as possible. The Ford Transit chassis is a decent replacement for the E series, Ford just needs to throw in the towl on it and force everyone to redesign there up fits. Thanks for watching!

      Why they don't just put it on the back of the pickup frames is beyond me. I would looooove our company to start getting our 12's and 16's on F350/F450, Silverado or Sierra chassis. As much as i love Ram's, our company doesn't have a contract with them. Our newest van based trucks in the forseeable future are Savanna chassis, although this past summer, we went to Morgan body to get a couple dozen E-Series trucks (I genuinely do not enjoy driving the E-Series trucks, i can tolerate the F-Series, but the vans just suck). Anyhoo, with GMC now the only ones with american spec vans, and i'll venture out to say no pickup based box trucks coming off the line, you'll see a GMC takeover. On a larger scale, from what i see coming in, box trucks will be predominantly International's (i've heard the MV's will start appearing in the fleet around the 2nd quarter of 2019), 12 and 16 foot box trucks will be almost exclusively GMC. Panel vans are Transits.
      Afterthought-if i'm not mistaken, the Ford engines are just Triton V10's 🤢 with either 2 or 4 cylinders missing, I believe ours are V6's.

      Funny you say that, I saw a 2018 16ft Penske on a F450 chassis here in Texas. It was definitely in the rental fleet and not a lease. It had the V10 in it. Caught me off guard but looked like a pretty nice truck! I don't like the MV series, but I guess the Duramax is a better engine than anything Navistar could design. I had a Savanna 4500 for a little bit as a work truck, not a super great truck but definitely more comfortable than a E-series

      @@crazyjdkid Ford is planning to replace the 6.8 V10 with the 7.3 Godzilla V8 starting in 2021. It will be more fuel efficient and more powerful than the V10.

      No, they have the 3 valve version. Look up "Ford modular engine" on Google and it will give you all the various Ford modular engine options. Scroll down to "6.8 liter" a d it will pull up the info for the 2 and 3 valve versions and for what various vehicles it came in. Since I'm here and commenting, I will tell you that if you have any reservations about buying any vehicle that has the Ford V10 engine in it, you need to put those 100% aside because you will be happy with the V10 in spite of some of the people that claim that it has horrible fuel mileage. I own the two valve version in a 2002 F250 extended cab long box 4 x 4 with an automatic transmission and it has been nothing but an awesome engine and I actually get pretty reasonable fuel mileage. I have the higher Highway gears that are 373 so that helps as well as compared to something with a 411 or 4:30 rear end but still, I get very decent fuel mileage and it has a pretty good amount of power. I also own a 2005 model that has the three valve version but unfortunately, I bought it with the engine locked up so I need to rebuild it. I cannot wait to get it rebuilt because I know that based on my experience with the older two valve version that I'm going to be more than happy with the three ball version as far as power. I actually worked at a couple Ford dealerships back in the late 90s and early 2000s as a technician so I am fairly familiar with working on vehicles but I will admit, I never did work on the Ford V10 engines at all and never even drove them to my knowledge until I actually purchase one about 6 years ago. I've been more than happy. Don't listen to people that claim that the engine is not that great or that it gets horrible fuel mileage. My guess is the people that are getting horrible fuel mileage are the ones that are constantly mashing their foot to the floor everywhere they go even though it's completely unnecessary or they set the cruise control when they are trying to let it go 70 miles an hour or 75 miles an hour and don't realize that you're never going to get reasonable fuel mileage at that speed when you are Towing things. If you are willing to not always use the cruise while you are towing, I have been able to get anywhere from 7 1/2 Mi to the gallon with an extremely heavy load of about 24,000 lb total and in some cases 8 to 8 and a half miles per gallon with about 20,000 pounds total. This is going anywhere from 65 mph to 70 miles an hour so I don't think that's completely horrible. I could obviously get better fuel mileage if I wanted to go slower but I don't like to go that slow.
      I personally have driven the largest 26 ft U-Haul box cargo truck with the V10 and 6-speed automatic transmission while I was also pulling the auto transport trailer with a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer that is the extended version and not the short version. The truck was completely full of household goods and had more than enough power to get up and down the mountains that I went through and got very good fuel mileage considering I was going quite fast for most of the trip. I got at least 7 Mi to the gallon but I know I could have gotten 8 to 8 1/2 had I decided to go slower but I didn't want to go slower. Considering how heavy the whole combination was, that's very good in my opinion. I've also driven the newer 7.3 L gas engine and although it was in the next size smaller truck that I believe was 22 ft, I was also towing a trailer with a smaller SUV on it and it had plenty of power as well but the fuel mileage wasn't any better. I am not impressed with the 7.3 L gasoline engine and I won't consider buying one if I ever have the option. It's not that it doesn't have a decent amount of power because it does and you can look up the specifications to see that it does so there's no reason to argue that. However, it doesn't get any better fuel mileage than the V10 and considering that the 7.3 L gasoline engine has variable camshaft phasers and the V10 in both versions does not have variable camshaft phasers, I'm not going to waste my time considering the 7.3 L gasoline engine because it's just going to have issues down the road with multiple failure points

    Those tires are probably the extra thick ones that you can get re-cut with a tread cutter . Heavy truck tires are a lot different than passenger tires.

      These are not heavy truck tires. Michelin LTX are for light truck and SUV tires, they are not regrovable. If Uhual actually inspected their vehicles and took pride in their equipment tires like this wouldn't be on their trucks. No excuse for their tires to look like that.

    I rented a 16foot truck from Penske to move from Chicago to Orlando and I specifically requested a GMC because of how much the Ford sucks. I got so lucky and they gave me a brand new 2019 GMC with only 700 miles on it. It was pretty dirty so I had to go on the 4th of July to have it cleaned at a Penske location. It had power locks and a backup camera. It also had Automatic headlights and automatic braking. Also a USB port and a power outlet. It did have cruise control even though it was limited to 70 mph. I was surprised with how decent the truck was. I didn’t mind putting 1,500 miles on it. I was so pleased with Penske.

      I thought everyone herd of a modular 2v ford engine gutless but pretty reliable and cheap to fix and keep up but it's hard to beat the old gmc with the 6.0 vortec and not to forget the 26fter with the big block 8.1 vortec and the old tbi big blocks 366 the f700 429s where just as good as the old 366 427 chevys

      @@kwb200 I own a 2002 Ford F250 with the 6.8 l two valve version of the V10 and it is far from gutless and has plenty of power. Sure, it doesn't have as much power as the 6.0 or anything newer as far as diesels and not quite as much as the 7.3 L Powerstroke but it is pretty close. It is also widely known to be extremely reliable and mine has over 340,000 Mi on the original engine so I am more than happy with it in the 6 years that I have owned it. It has been very good so far. I also have a 2005 model with the three valve version of the V10 but the engine was locked up when I purchased it so I need to rebuild it and I'm looking forward to that. There are plenty of owners out there that are extremely happy with their v10s from Ford and you can go online and look at all the different forums or groups or watch videos of various people that are happy. Sure, there are many people that complain about the fuel mileage but I actually get just as good and better fuel mileage than the newer 7.3 L gasoline engine from ford. I am betting that the reason a lot of people get crappy fuel mileage is because they can't keep their foot out of the accelerator pedal everywhere they go around town because it's got a pretty decent amount of power and most people like that. Also, I am venturing the guess that a lot of people just like to set the cruise control at 70 mph or maybe even 75 mph while Towing and just let it take control and unfortunately that will eat the fuel mileage up pretty bad. If you are willing to not always have the cruise control on and use your foot to control the acceleration going up and down hills, you can easily add a couple miles per gallon if you know what you're doing.

    Litte unfair to comment on gas mileage when your towing 5,000 lbs of dead weight behind you.
    And doesn’t Penske and budget use the same chassis for their trucks? I mean the bald tires are unacceptable and I’ve refused trucks from them for that crap.

      The 26ft diesel weighing about 10k pounds more than this combo gets better mileage, so not entirely unfair. In this size of truck, yes they generally use the same chassis. That said both Penske and Budget spec their chassis much nicer with things like cruise control, adjustable mirrors and usually actually perform the maintenance. Do you know how painful it is to drive 1000 miles without cruise? In the 26ft class of trucks, Penske wins hands down for using diesel. The best one out of all of them though is Ryder, they spec their trucks like Cadillacs. I will also note that in this class of truck Ryder gives you a diesel cabover with a liftgate rather than a cutaway Ford E-series or Chevy Savanna.

      To each their own. I’ve had bad luck with diesel Penske trucks. The transmission in them is garbage and it just dogs along. The last truck I rented from them had recapped tires and was just a real piece of junk.

      You probably rented them when they still had the Eaton Automated Manual with Hydraulic brakes in their trucks. And with that, I would have to agree with you they were garbage especially with the MaxxForce DT. They have moved away from those and now use a Cummins with an Allison Automatic, which is a legendary combo.

      Yeah I’m a commercial driver and I love the Cummins and Allison combo. The last Penske I had was a 2014. It had air brakes but that Eaton tranny it was so awful lol.

      He didn't realize that you need to turn the steering wheel when trying to start it and that's why the key wasn't turning that well. This is a security feature that virtually any vehicle has and the fact that he doesn't know that tells us a lot about his knowledge of vehicles in general. He doesn't even really know how to drive a vehicle to be honest if you can't figure that out. Quite frankly, he's somewhat clueless when it comes to these trucks. I've worked on many Ford vehicles and driven a few of the U-Hauls and actually had the privilege to drive the biggest 26 ft U-Haul with the three valve version of the V10 with a 6-speed automatic transmission and then also the next size down which was the 22 ft with the newer 7.3 L gasoline engine and 6-speed automatic transmission as well. The newer gasoline engine had a good amount of power but honestly, the three valve V10 version had probably just as much power in my opinion. Both times I was Towing the auto transport with an SUV on the back but the bigger 26 version I had was towing a heavier 2002 Trailblazer and the smaller 22 ft box truck I was towing a smaller SUV (I think a small Kia or Hyundai) to compare. Both trucks performed very well but honestly, the V10 was plenty powerful and got just as good a fuel mileage. I would never take the 7.3 L over the v10. The V10 beats the 7.3 L in my opinion and is a trusted and tried and true reliable performer and the 7.3 L is going to have issues down the road so I wouldn't trust it. The v10s are simply a reliable engine and I agree with you that he's complaining about way too much and that tells a lot about his knowledge of vehicles. These are moving trucks and they are not meant to be quiet. Also, they're not going to ride very well when they are not loaded. They ride like crap when they are unloaded but when you get them loaded up they ride very well. I know based on my experience. But, that's a given with virtually any pickup truck with the exception of the half ton trucks because they're meant to be more of a car nowadays than anything else. 3/4 ton trucks and up are meant to be used for work so they're meant to have a trailer behind them so if they're not Towing something or they don't have the pickup bed loaded down with cargo, of course they're going to ride like crap. I also got better fuel mileage with a larger U-Haul and I was going quite fast on my Thousand Mile trip.
