HOLY. CRAP. I made this for my family for dinner tonight and it is hands down the best dish I have ever made, possibly best dish I've ever eaten in my life. Sooooo delicious, it's like better than restaurant quality. Also shockingly easy to clean up after, too! THANK YOU NISHA!!!! Will be making this again very very very soon
Iâm so flattered to hear that! Thank you so much for sharing and so amazing to hear it was one of the best dishes youâve eaten!
I will give it a try for sure
I made it tonight also and it's so good! And using ingredients that are cheap and that I mostly have in my pantry! This will definitely be becoming a regular!
GIIIRRLLL!! Tried it too! I AM OBSESSED can't stop talking about it. EVERYONE loved it even the toughest ones!!!!!!!
Oh Iâm so making this and sharing it with my neighbors. They are an elderly couple and my husband and I trade recipes with them and routinely have them over for dinner in non-pandemic times. Weâve all been so isolated so we make sure to bring them a meal every week. When they are done eating they usually take a walk to the house to drop off our clean dish and we enjoy a scotch on the front steps. Itâs getting cold so outside drinks will stop soon but we are not going to break tradition and it starts with this meal.
YES!! A trip to India years ago made me realise I could eat veg without even think about eating meat ever again.
I am with you there my friend !
India is vegetarian heaven, yes but vegan friendly? Absolutely not. I am a vegan living in India and life is much harder than if I were living in the west. There are no plant based alternatives to any animal products, which means no plant based milk. I have to make almond, cashew and oat milks at home, which I don't really mind, but store bought ones in the west are fortified with calcium, vitamin b12 etc. I have to take b12 supplements. No soybeans in the market, no soy milk and therefore no tofu. (And I used to love cottage cheese when I was vegetarian). India is a dairy loving country and the biggest producer of dairy so dairy products are found almost everywhere, especially desserts. Ghee (milk fat) is also used in almost every dish.
Plus vegan restaurants are an EXTREME rarity. There isn't a single one in my city.
The only good thing about being vegan in India is that I don't have to endure the stupid and blatantly tone deaf arguments against veganism that one comes across in the west. No one even knows the term "vegan" here. I might be the only vegan in my city.

Hot tip: Keep the ginger in the freezer (it will never spoil!) and then grate in the frozen state. Much easier, super fine, perfect.

Ingredients:
â 1 tablespoon refined or virgin coconut oil, or a neutral-flavored oil
â 4 cloves garlic, minced
â 2 inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled and minced or grated
â 1 tablespoon minced fresh turmeric, or 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
â 1-2 serrano peppers, diced (adjust according to desired spice level)
â 1 teaspoon ground cumin
â 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
â 1/2 teaspoon Indian red chili powder (if you only have regular chili powder, which is a blend, use 1 teaspoon)
â 2 teaspoons curry powder
â 1 teaspoon garam masala
â Kosher salt or sea salt to taste (I use about 1 tsp kosher salt, and add more at the end)
â Freshly cracked black pepper to taste
â 1 cup (180-190g) red lentils, or split red lentils (the split variety will cook a bit quicker)
â 2 cups (480 mL) low-sodium vegetable broth
â 1 (14-ounce / 400g) can crushed tomatoes (or half of a 28-ounce can)
â 1 (13.5-ounce/400 mL) can full-fat coconut milk
â 3 tablespoons unsweetened creamy almond butter
â 1/2 a small lemon, juiced
â 1/2 cup (~8g) fresh cilantro, roughly chopped
â For serving: Basmati or Jasmine rice and Indian flatbread such as roti, paratha, or naan

The is the best vegan dish Iâve made so far! My husband repeatedly said, âThis is so good. Thank you for making this!â Even my picky daughter was lured in and ate it up. I swapped a few items based on what I had in my pantry - paprika instead of chili powder, tahini instead of almond butter, and white balsamic vinegar instead of lemon juice - and it still turned out phenomenal. I canât wait to recreate this using all of the original ingredients! Thank you for helping to make vegan dishes that are gobbled up by all!
Thank you for confirming with me that this recipe still tastes delicious with a few swapped ingredients!!
That's amazing! I'd've never thought to swap almond butter for tahini. How much do you add? I know Tahini is very strong and would hate to ruin the dish by adding too much đ
@@umarishaque3936 i just made this dish yesterday with tahini and I used the same amount as stated in the recipe (2 tbsp). Howeverrr, you're completely right! I would recommend just 1 tablespoon :)

I think I may have Hashimotoâs or something similar but I have to wait too long to get into my endocrine doctor and what ever I have is hard to catch, my blood work shows my thyroid is bad only when Iâm in the middle of a bad attack to the point I canât breathe. Did your GF experience attacks at night with heart palpitations, soar throat, anxiety, sweating, tremor, shortness of breath, burning in lungs, intense hunger, difficulty sleeping, pain everywhere, for a couple weeks at a time every night, only at night or the afternoon? And then an off period where you feel sort of normal but also very lethargic, not hungry, and sleep a lot for like a month or so? Did she suffer from low B12 and low Vitamin D before getting diagnosed? Did she use heavy amounts of cannabis and nicotine to control her symptoms before she knew what was wrong?

Grated ginger hack: Buy a large batch of fresh ginger. Peel and chop into pieces. Throw into a Vitamix and add just enough water to make a thick paste. Put into an ice cube tray and freeze.Pop out and store in a freezer bag. Each cube is a potent 1Tbsp of grated ginger.
Thank you! My mom does something similar and always tells me to do the same. Do you think the flavor retains its potency over time?
Great tip.. Would you know what's an alternative way if you don't own a vitamax?
my mom grates both ginger and garlic and blends it and keeps in stock
The ginger cubes in freezer bags seem to keep the strong potent flavor for months. I usually do a couple pounds at a time.
I think the tricks is to use minimal water in the vitamix, freeze immediately and take it out of the ice cube trays right after freezing because itâs exposed to air and freezer burn if left in the trays for too long
If no vitamix, you could try a regular blender or food processor and see if it works. Iâve only tried a Vitamix though so Iâm not sure.
Love this ginger hack. Thank you!
I can't believe I even made this! I had indian food like twice in my life, in my country it's not much popular, because we use less spices and less chilli and ginger, so for me is Indian food like a fire in my mouth. But I tried to be careful with the spices in this recipe and I love it so much! It's the best Indian and the best vegan food I ever had. And still can't believe I made it. Thank you so much for sharing these recipes, I'm starting realizing being vegan is not impossible for me.

Ugh. I hate that kids are so dang mean sometimes. I canât believe people teased you because your house âsmelled like curryâ. My neighbors were best friends with me and my brother growing up. They were Indian via the UK. I STILL remember how good that house always smelled to me. I remember their mom wearing lots of jewelry and jingling when she walked and listening to her sing along to the Beatles while she cooked. Such a bright happy home and family. They used to serve a dish just like this often. Great memories associated with this dish but Iâve never tried to make it myself. Didnât think it would be this simple!
every kid was teased about something...kids are little shits! I'm German and we had some bizarre meals, and the kids mocked me for it too...
Their loss is that they will never get to experience what that smell tastes likeđ. I use to be. One of those ignorant fools that had no clue of the awesomeness of the Indian food! đ±đ€
I would have said "What's smells so good? Curry?" Goes home: "Mom, can you make curry???" I had a 4th grade friend who just moved to NJ from California is 1965....I had TACOS at her house and had never even HEARD of a "taco." Got my mom to make the Old El Paso tacos....my dad LOVED them! I will never forget that! Well, we ALL loved them!
My house smells of beans and red chili and onions and warm tortillas!! Mmmmm
What's wrong with a home smelling like good food?
Being British and a curry lover I was excited to try this, I'm neither a veggie or Vegan but I do often try foods from these categories and my wife sticks mainly to veggie and sometimes vegan diets. So wanting to make something nice for her, your headline grabbed me in and we were not disappointed. Superb recipe and so very tasty. Thank you
so i've already been making this for months but it's one of those recipes where you need to keep a batch of it in the fridge at all times, it's so delicious and comforting
Iâve been making curry for 25 years. This recipe is the best Iâve had. It is now my go to curry and the family is thrilled!
I've made this three times in the last three weeks and we've just run out and I'm planning to get the coconut milk to make it again today. It's so so good.
As someone who used to get teased as a kid for bringing Indian food to school, and now as an adult gets requests from friends to make Indian food Iâm so happy to see you teaching everyone how to make a simple dal. Letâs make everyoneâs house smell like curry!
Just a couple of things, if one is not allergic to peanuts, using coldpressed peanut oil to sauté spices in actually gives a lot of additional flavor.
If you sauté a small amount of ural dal or some cashews, it will give a slight crunchy feel at times to the dal. A little bit of textural variety, I guess this is why Indian moms are always yelling at us to not forget the tadka!
I love the coconut milk idea, thatâs brilliant!
Incidentally my grandmother did not eat onions or garlic for spiritual reasons. What Iâve been told is that if you add asafoetida (hing) that actually can substitute for that flavor.
You have inspired me try this in an instant pot (which has been sitting unused in my kitchen for at least a year) đ
Thank you for your comment! Yes, let's get more kitchens to smell like curry! I will be staying with my parents for a few weeks, so I'm looking forward to raiding my mom's stash (I know she has lots of urad dal and asafoetida!). Neither of my parents really use peanut oil so I'm not too familiar with it, but I will try it out!
@@RainbowPlantLife As a peanut sensitive person, I'd caution you about using this for your public recipes, It's generally consider a low quality, very mass produced oil. And makes some of us very ill. When I was small it was in lots of foods since it was so cheap, even candy. I never had an M&M until they changed the formula when I was an adult đą. I've lately gotten into avocado oil (slightly healthier as oils go, with a mild flavor and high smoke point). I buy the spray bottles so I can get just a touch of oil for nice browning with virtually no calories.
I only rediscovered the flavours of peanut oil or groudnut oil after 25years of living out of India.
I remember that my grandmothers kitchen used to produce amazingly mouth watering dishes with this oil.
Of course, one has to check intolerance level.
But an honest confession is that using groundnut oil in my Indian cooking has helped me to lose weight too.
Thank you for sharing friendly sarathy.
Education in another style of cooking is always welcome đđâ€
Anna - so nice to hear your perspective! I had been using canola oil in America for many years, found that olive doesnât really work well with Indian spices, itâs also not high heat friendly either. And then when I was spending time in India I realized that people are using ground nut oil or peanut oil and it would create a really beautiful taste in the dishes and this is a traditional cooking oil in certain parts of India. I like the spectrum brand expeller pressed peanut oil that you can find at Whole Foods. Also realized that different regions of India have different cooking oilâs, Yes, I find that cooking in peanut oil also helps with your weight, I think perhaps you donât end up using as much oil because the oil itself is so flavorful. Good luck on all your cooking and health endeavors!
Thanks for the tip about adding some cashews. I really loved the crunchy texture.
This is DELICIOUS! Seriously! The flavor is on point!
Ive been eyeing this recipe since the day you first uploaded the recipe, and now, over a year later, I finally made it!
My family loved it! They all went back for seconds, and thatâs really saying something!
Thank you thank you thank you for this amazing recipe.
I made this again last night and it's soooo yummy. I do always add a large finely chopped onion and this time a grated courgette/zucchini as wel and used less liquid to compensate for the wetness of the courgette. It's a pretty forgiving recipe, I've made it with a jar of pasta sauce when I didn't have a tin of crushed tomatoes or passata, I've used really soft cream cheese when I didn't have coconut milk and so on. Coriander/cilantro tastes soapy to me so I use different green herbs instead. There are always containers of this curry in my freezer so I can have delicious meals really easily.
Been trying more plant-based cooking this year had this recipe recommended to me and have now made it twice and it is one of the best dishes i have ever made. I added diced kale to mine because I am trying to get more greens and a diced potato. This will be in my regular rotation of recipes. love the channel!

As a meat eater... I fully & wholeheartedly approve of this message. This "Daal" or Lentil Curry is my personally comfort food.. nutritious, easy on the tummy & easy to make... I have been eating this for so long.. and I always salivate at the thought of eating this again
I think we need to revise the word "meat eater", you don't exactly eat meat exclusively, you eat other food including meat, so vegan food shouldn't be repulsive to you.
I'm an omnivore, I eat what I find to be good. Whether it's a Vegetarian, Vegan or Meat dish. I've had lentil curry many times. I personally prefer spicy Lamb Madras. But I'll sit and eat Vegan food with vegans without complaining because if the food is good, it's good. Now... vegan cheese on the other hand.... that's just wrong.
i just made this and it is SO DELICIOUS !! iâm not vegan but iâm trying to eat less meat and animal products, so this was just perfect! my family loved it as well and iâm definitely going to make it again. thank you so much for this recipe !!
Hi! So inspiring to hear youâre trying to reduce your meat intake, howâs it been going?đ
Made this tonight⊠OMG it turned out sooo freakin good! Like I couldnât get enough of it! Will definitely be trying out Nishaâs other recipes!!! Beautiful dish. Thank you so much for sharing đđ»â€ïž
This is just scrumptious! I loved it! Iâm sure mine was not quite as good as yours, but it still made me eat too much of it. Iâm already planning to invite company and serving them this fabulous dish.
I made this tonight and this was so amazing!!! Iâm two and a half weeks in going plant based my kids donât want to try what Iâm eating but tonight they all ate it and more!! Thank you!!
Great timing! Just this morning I was staring at a bag of red lentils in my pantry and wondering what I would make with them. Your recipe answered my question, thanks!
That's such perfect timing :) I hope you'll love the recipe, John!
RainbowPlantLife question for you: I notice you (and other CZcams chefs) dice or mince your garlic rather than use a garlic press. Iâm lazy and the garlic press seems a convenience, is there a practical difference? Should I avoid using the press?
@@jpe1 no difference at all.
Subhajit M good, because itâs certainly much more convenient, especially if Iâm doing more than one clove (which I often am)
I guess the big difference is, as you said, convenience. Personally, I find it more convenient to only use my chef knife when cooking as I just have to clean one item instead of two.
I just made it for Dinner. WOW! my fav new dish. I was never crazy about lentils until now. Thanks for the great recipe.
Made this twice itâs absolutely delicious! Some changes I made the 2nd time and I love: 1tsp Indian chilli powder instead of 1/2, 3 chillis instead of 2, and added a tsp of red chilli paste. Also used peanut butter instead of almond butter. It wasnât spicy, just super flavourful đ
Itâs the first recipe of yours I tried. I then tried tens of others in your book because itâs just ridiculously good and makes me fall in love with your recipes!
Aww I am so happy to hear that. Truly makes me smile!
What is the name of your book?
This is now a staple in my house! I make this once a week and everyone loves it, even my picky one year old. We just use less spice for her baby mouth lol. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this gem with the worldđ
Absolutely amazing recipe!!!!!! I was just looking for a regular curry and never could find one that had enough flavor and it never tasted super flavorful until I tried this one. Now itâs my go to and only curry recipe I use!!! Thank YOU!
This is the best curry recipe Iâve ever made. The first taste and I knew I would make it again đ thank you!!
Quartrinity="OKAY...WE'RE DONE HERE!" Chef, you had me crack up with that responseđ€Ł
LOL
I thought it was kinda rude..
@Eric Babcock , That's funny to you, whatever.
I agree with Erin-to the person who would NEVER talk to her husband this way...no one cares. You probably have a boring marriage. Get a sense of humor. She almost always takes his feedback but in this case she just decided to joke with him and his word no one knows. I replayed this about 4 times and cracked up each time! Perfection.
Iâve been making red lentil curry for years, itâs one of my go to meals. Iâm super excited to try it with the coconut milk, almond butter, and lemon. Thanks for posting! Looks amazing
You're so welcome, Chris! I love how satisfying and easy red lentil curry is!
Love it. I've tried dal recipes before that without terribly inspiring results. This was terrific. The almond butter, the squeeze of lemon, the cilantro -- it all comes together for both an irresistible taste and texture. Looking forward to exploring more of your channel.
I just did this and it is one of the best curry recipes I have made so far! Really delicious, definitely will be coming back to this dish
THIS WAS SO GOOD. Made it for my family and everyone loved it so much.
I was never a fan of curry. I wanted to expand my tastes and tried out this recipe. Itâs absolutely delicious! Not only will I make this more often, I want to explore different kinds of curry. Thank you for providing this recipe!
a dish this simple has no right being so delicious, thank you soo much for the recepie
This is one of the best meals I have ever eaten! So many wonderful flavors! Thank you so much!
This video was recommended to me; so I watched it. Then, I immediately got in my car and hit up the grocery store for the ingredients I didn't have. Having just tasted the final dish, I can honestly say that the flavors are so beautiful, and this dish is definitely a winner. I'm packing up an extra container to take to a coworker for lunch tomorrow!
I can confirm this is THE BEST curry recipe Iâve ever tried
Wow, thank you! so nice to hear that, Martha!
I just made this for the first time and it was so good! Not only did it taste absolutely delicious but it was incredibly filling! Everyone loved it and wanted the recipe! Thank you Nisha đ !
Watch these videos all the time for the last couple of years. Yesterday was my first day actually trying to make one of the recipes and this was it. So easy to make and so delicious. Made the mushroom stroganoff today and it was also delicious and pretty easy to make.
This is so amazing that I make it over and over, always consistently delicious, full, rich deep flavors, all meld perfectly together. Brilliant again, Nisha!
Iâm not plant based, but this is one of the best meals Iâve ever made. I will make this forever, for myself and for guests in my home. Thank you for this easy, cheap, and mainly pantry staple meal. 20 stars out of 5
I love this recipe sooo much!! First curry Iâve ever made myself and it is perfect! One of my comfort foods now and even my non vegan/non vegetarian family likes it đ
I've made this dish at least six times, and it was delicious every time! Thanks, Nisha, for your videos and recipes. You're the best!
This recipe was super easy and delicious. Its actually given me so much more confidence in the kitchen. Can't wait to try more from you! Thank you!
That's such fabulous news - I love to hear that it made you feel more confident in the kitchen. Can't wait to hear what you make next :)
I made this last week, added tofo. Asked my boyfriend his opinion without context and he said next time I should just make the pieces of chicken larger, as butter chicken needs bigger chunks of meat. đReally an amazing recipe- I added the tofu and used light coconut milk.
Hii :) I have a question because of the tofu, have you just like idk threw it in there or have you baked it before or sth? Just curious because I have to admit that whenever I try to make tofu it comes out horrible..
@@sannanas5597 You can bet a large sum of money she prepared the tofu in advance. I'd bet she used an air fryer, too. Pro Home Cook has a video about three dishes he makes, and he air fried some tofu and they came out super crispy. Getting tofu right takes equipment, skill, and practice.
@@sannanas5597 If you want crispy tofu that also absorbs sauce, you can cut smoked tofu in little cubes, marinate them in a mix of sesame oil, fermented chilli sauce, a little shugar and soy- or fish sauce for a few minutes then put them and some flour in a bowl with a lid and shake them. If you have marinade left, add it to the tofu, add more flour if needed and shake again untill they are evenly coated. Then spread oil on a baking sheet and put the tofu on it. Bake in a preheated oven on 180°C for 30 to 40 minutes and turn the cubes over from time to time untill they are golden brown and crunchy, then add them to your sauce.
@@kiri23234 thank you so much i ll definitly try this!!!
Just made this and it was fantastic! Really appreciate recipes like this being shared âșïžđ
This is absolutely delicious. I only wish I had doubled it, my two boys and I nearly finished the entire pot of this deliciousness!
Yâalllllll this was BOMB!! I followed the recipe to a tee (which I never do) and it was sooo incredible. Iâll be adding this to my rotation of meals. THANK YOU đ
OMG! I made this for dinner for tonight and my family absolutely loved it. My whole family were all saying "mmmmmm" on the first bite. Thanks for sharing. I have subscribed to your channel đ
Definitely the best curry dish I have ever made from an online recipe!!!! Thanks for sharing such delicious meals with us!!!
I tried your recipe today. I switched out lentils for garbanzo beans since it what I had on hand, still came out delicious! Thank you for sharing your recipe!
Have made this dish many times... never gets old. DELISHHHH, we all love it. Easy recipe and easy to find ingredients. Thank you for sharing it with us.
My wife tried making this - so, so happy with the way it turned out! Great recipes!.
I just made this for my daughter....14 years old and adores Indian and heavy spice! She adores this curry! I added curry leaves and minced onion but otherwise stuck completely to the recipe. I cook for other families also and will add this to my rotation with them! Awesome.
Just made this (but also with onion and peas) and it was so gorgoeus with pilau rice âĄâĄ thank you for always having amazing recipes
