The fact that the kitten ran right to you is already a good indication that he/she has the beginnings of being an outstanding lifelong companion. Good luck. "Mister Lucy" was a very small kitten and not old enough to be away from his mom when I rescued him a little more than 13 years ago. He is the best friend and best companion I ever had. One important thing to remember, never tease your cat. They won't appreciate it and they won't understand it. Mister Lucy was so trusting I could spray the patio off with the hose and could spray within a foot of him when he was lying there and he would never even flinch because he knew that I would never squirt him with the garden hose. He was the most personable, easy going, well mannered and gentle cat ever.

I rescued 2 feral 8 week old kittens. They were very ill (in fact, the rest of the litter had already died) so the vet had me put a gel on the inside of the eyelids and there were liquid meds, as well. To do this, I wrapped them up together, in a towel, did the meds first, then continued to hold them, while I watched TV and occasionally spoke to them. Most of the time, I was "talking" to an empty room when I came in to refresh their food, water and scoop. After a couple of months, it was like a light switch and they came to me to seek affection...then I became their Mommy. Watching them play together, clean each other and curl up with each other became such a joy. Hat's off to you for rescuing your fur baby.

I was not a cat person, but was living with a girl who had a number of cats, including a Russian Blue who was a little tubby around the middle and had a dread on her back just south of her shoulder blades where she couldn't reach. She did NOT like people and would run and hide as soon as I would walk in the room. One day, I got it in my head to cut that dread off and I suffered quite a few scratches/bites when I would brush her back every day for the next couple of weeks. But when I woke up one morning to her head butting me and purring, it was pretty special. She was my little buddy after that.

previous cat owner here. I believe from your description of events that the dread was causing her pain. you may have subconsciously picked up on the 'signals' she was giving off, which would explain your sudden desire to cut it off, and constantly groom her. it also appears it took her some time to realize 'this human isn't going to hurt me no matter what I do, and she help me with my grooming by getting that spot on my back I cant reach. she is my friend.' cats tend to be fairly reasonable creatures, and the motives behind various behaviors can easily be intuited if you spend time thinking about things.

I’ve found that if you’re making eye contact with a cat, it helps a lot to blink slowly and have a calm expression.
They might blink back or calm down if you do this. I think it’s a message meaning “I trust you” and the cat might be like “ok, you trust me, I’ll try trusting you” and possibly try relaxing more around you.
Then you go back to doing your own thing or gently holding your hand out (or something with your smell) for them to sniff.
Once my nervous kitten came up to me and sniffed my arm, we made eye contact and I slow blinked and she did it back and walked away.
She later came back and just walked back and forth from my head and arms back to the bottom of my bed. She did this to get use to the idea of laying with me and I just let her do her own thing.
Now she likes to sleep on my chest and it’s adorable ^_^

Doreen Morales oh that’s a big negative, you want to teach them tht ur hand is not a toy. That behavior will carry over into adulthood for sure if u don’t stop it now. Buy a couple of toys like the mouse on a string for it to play with. U want to strongly reject the cat playing with ur hand as a toy and biting it. I have a cat now and didn’t know any better and it’s awful when ur petting her and she thinks it’s play time and rolls onto her back, grabs ur hand with her front legs, puts claws into ur hand, starts kicking and biting u.

I've been owned by +35 cats in my life... I've actually had this happen... I was walking down an alley when I lived in Baltimore, and a cat ran off the back porch, climbed under the fence, plopped down in front of me and wouldn't let me past until I gave him a tummy rub and some snuggles. I made sure to remember the house and would walk past every couple of days, to find him doing that each time !
The feline's staff person ( female ) told me that she was amazed by that, as she said he avoided most people who came by.
I told her that cats know a 'cat person' so I wasn't surprised by her cat's action... ended up by the lady being a friend, since she figured that if her cat would so obviously choose me... I must be a good guy.
I've always attracted cats... and I've never refused a purrball's request for attention !
    CATS RULE !

Whenever I am walking on a sidewalk or on a walking trail, I ALWAYS get dogs coming up to me with their owners wanting to be pet. Same when I visit someone with a cat - usually, the cat comes meowing to me wanting attention. Hey, I'm not gonna turn down some animal love! :)

When the cat isn't absolutely horrified by humans, touching them frequently makes them see touch is normal and even good :) Finding out what treats and toys a specific cat likes is important too because they are all different and may not like same things as others. Also let them sleep, don't wake them up unnecessarily. It would be amazing if the cat can climb high, since they feel safest in a high place where they can see everything. Cat caves are good too. It's also good to make the cat carrier a normal part of their environment so they won't associate it with only negative things like going to the vet. Place food and water in multiple places so they can eat and drink wherever it feels the safest, then you can see which is their favourite place and start using that for feeding. Also, if they get dirty don't soak them, use wet towels to clean them as getting wet it's extremely stressful and sometimes even harmful for some cats. These were from the top of my head, sorry for rambling!

Watched this for fun. I've had my cat Sami since she was a kitten. She's about 10 now and she's always by my side. Sleeps on me at night and whenever I'm sitting (even on the toilet) she's jumps on my lap without even asking or without any warning. She's my furry baby and I love her to pieces. It'll be hard to let her go and move on when she one day passes. People have told me she's lucky to have me because my mom and I give her a good home. I tell them I'm lucky to have her. Don't know what I did to deserve so much love. To deserve such a loyal lifetime friend. (My mom adopted Sami and/but Sami adopted me.)

Thank you, i just took in a stray kitten (about 5mths old) that turned up at my door starving, she was just skin & bones. She's obviously been traumatised & bullied by other cats by her scars & her reactions to seeing other cats. She is very growly, unsure of everything except food but each day is a little better. This video makes sense to me regarding her now.
So far i've mostly let her do her own thing to settle in how she wants to. I wish i could just pick her up & hug & kiss her until she feels safe, comfortable & confident but i can't. It breaks my heart that she has these trust issues & forced to go through what she's been through. It will take time & i have to be patient.

During this time of grief, my other cat has been very distant and nervous around me, she’s not eating or drinking and just seems very confused all the time. It’s like she lost her other half and she’s just not there. I find her meowing a lot lately, just randomly, as if she’s still waiting for her brother to come home. Anyways, I could really use some prayers right now during this hard, devastating time. And thank you so much for this video. 😊

My wife and I have always had numerous cats in our home (2 story with full basement access) and we treat them as part of the family which they are. They are always rescues and it is so gratifying to see them develop their personalities and become more comfortable in the new forever home we provide. Always fresh fountain water and good quality food plus health care as needed. We cherish them and spoil them and they love it (and show it) just as we love them being part of our family.

I try to keep environment calm and tons of patience, and show I trust her and visa versa. She is still scared of boys bc they had thrown rocks and sticks at her. She refused to leave her babies. I am in MI and she came from Cinn. OH. I knew I wanted her immediately, to show her unconditional love, attention, and to know she is safe. For those of you who just want to get your friend's cat to feel at ease with or approach you next time you visit, I can offer you four tips to help. (I am well known as 'the cat whisperer' among family and friends, and even the 'scared' or 'mean' cats are usually sitting in my lap by the end of a visit.)
One, get on their level. Or even sink below it. I tend to kneel or sit at a middle distance from the kitty.
Two, relax your posture. Let your shoulders drop and all your muscles soften. Cats are masters of body language, and any tension you carry will put them ill at ease.
Three, slow blink. This is the one my friends scoff at, but I am serious. It's almost magical how a slow blink will calm a cat down. I've heard some people call it a cat's way of saying "I love you," and I could see that.
Four, present your hand, but in a very specific way. Keep your elbow loose, and keep your fingers in a loose curl. Never extend your fingers. This gives an aggressive, 'claws out' message to them, whereas a closed hand invites them to sniff and perhaps rub against you. For some cats, presenting your hand up close will be fine, if they are not opposed to you being near to them. If a cat is aggressive, stressed, scared or timid, doing so from across the room (or down the driveway... yes, I have a habit of petting cats around the neighborhood....) leaves the option up to them as to when they want to approach. You may have to give up and try again in a little bit, but eventually the cat will come towards you and sniff.
Don't pet them unless they invite you to, even after the hand ritual is complete. Try to be as aware of their own body language, posture and tension as they are of yours. But if you're patient, not pushy and calm, you too can become a cat whisperer. :3

I was told by a vet decades ago that if you get a kitten, that it's better to get two, preferably from the same litter... that's so when you gone at work/shopping... they have someone to socialize with. I lived on 10 acres of country land as a kid and our 8 cats would damn well invite other neighborhood cats over for dinner !
We had to get a 18" wide pan, fill it halfway full, walk out the back kitchen door, yell 'KITTY...KITTY...KITTY " THEN DROP the pan and step back ! Within seconds all you saw was about 14 - 18 cat behind's with tails straight up and many sounds of ' nom nom nom '

Stray cats are surprisingly easy to tame with one formula I’ve followed. It will take a little time, but not necessarily more than a month. Don’t start out by approaching a cat. Let it see you every day and talk to it. It will be accustomed to you being around enough that they will feel comfortable with you being nearby. Begin offering it food. Get closer every day you feed it. Eventually it will be comfortable with you being very close. After it is fine with you being a few inches away, you can easily pet it while it is eating. After this, the cat will actually begin to pursue you. When it wants to eat, or when you are generally talking to it, you will notice it rubbing against nearby objects (like it wants to be petted but is cautious). It will inch closer by itself and rub against you leg. That’s pretty much it. I don’t recommend picking it up. Let it move away and don’t bother it if it doesn’t welcome your advances. The interaction just becomes easier from here.
I’ve tamed three stray cats this way. I don’t recommend doing this if you are not willing to adopt the cat or don’t currently have someone else willing to.

I have been caring for two feral cats for almost ten yeats. They are brother and sister, both born in my backyard. I was bonding with them and the mother by spending time in my backyard. I would stretch and throw a baseball at a pitch-back - talking to them. They gather safe distance from me or jump up on the fence and sit and watch me frim the closest point to me on the fence. I would also hit small whiffle balls with a tennis racket and they would tear after it and steal it from one another. I do not know what happened to the mother. She was not around after I retuned from a trip caring for my as$hol@ father. And, all those trip...i was gone so long./..I lost that connection wiith them. The brother and sister were always so close. Never leaving each other. Past few weeks, the brother has been leaving during the day. I dont know where he goes. His sister is either depressed or not feeling well. She seems to be eating some at night (maybe after her brother returns) but I never see her eat or drink during the day. dI am broken hearted for her. She just sits outside my arcadia windiow and sleeps. I am going to try and trap her in a few days and take her to the vet. I am also trying to spend time with her outside and talking to her. I dont know what to do and I filled with guilt for leaving them all that time, although they had food and water (I have wondefful neighbors). G..guys.. when I picked up my cat the very first night. He was purring so loud, going right up to me, showing me his belly, (means trust) and lied down on my lap and went to sleep! On the first night...

Our cat is like that too. Offers his belly to anyone who wants to touch. My wife, me, our visiting family and friends, the mailman, neighbors. Nobody's ever been threatening to him or even teased him, which may explain why he is so trusting, but I suspect that some cats are just hussies 🤣.

My cat Sophie was like that. She immediately followed me everywhere, would wake me up every morning sitting on my chest and pawing my cheek. I miss her so much. I now have another cat, adopted her yesterday. She’s been hiding under my bed ever since. I just need some ideas on how to make friends with her.

    • @coconutcoco150
      @coconutcoco150 Před 3 lety

@@audreychurch Not all kitties had good start and trusting people in their lives. My kitty who's very happy with my family now, had such begining and also tried to hide under bed. I tried to enclose bed so she doesn't go there, but then it was impossible and I just got rid of all obstacles and I allowed her to sit there (give your cat toys, cat bed or blanket wherever it decided to sit). Idk how old your cat is, but it's better if you put it into some smaller designated space and be able to reach and pet kitty and give them food and talk to the cat a lot and try to play with it. Give your new kitty around a week of accustoming to 1 room, it will be comfortable in that space, then gradually introduce to the rest of house. She had litter box, water etc in that room I made for her ( it's still her favourite room also where I sleep). I was with her almost all the time at start, she meowed like crazy when I wasn't in the room. So, try to put kitty on literbox so it knows where to pee, show water, food. It'd be nice to buy a sturdy cat tree with tall scratch posts. It will grow to love you just show you're friendly. Maybe try to make a purrito out of your cat - put to blanket and pet ( watch Kitten Lady vids on youtube about feral kitties and how to make them trust you). I think such socializing in blanket helped a lot, we used to do that with my kitty, she was only 2 months old when we did that and when we brought her, sitting and petting her like this for hours the next day. My kitty is almost 6mo now. Your cat will show you when they're ready to learn more about your house and meet more people. Keep watch over it at all times right after bringing them. If they jump on counters, keep taking them down until they stop. I did scold my kitty sometimes but it was necessary for her safety, like when she attempted to jump on oven etc. She doesn't ever since.

I just adopted 2 persian kitties (3 and 5 years old) they were rescued from a hoarding situation. Lady had about 60-80 cats. They were terrified on day 1 but have now been snuggling up to me- it's now day 3. Sometimes they get scared of everyday noises like the dog barking or the washer/dryer going off, but I think they'll learn slowly that they are safe here (:

I have found that a very effective way to reassure a scared distrustful cat is to introduce a kitten to the scene who trusts you and comes to you. The big cats fears can vanish in no time. That’s if you have a kitten of course.

Long story short, my siblings noticed a stray cat walking around our house and they opened the door to check it out and it somehow ended up in the house (it went through the wide opened door). And we were all screaming in panic because we’re not good with animals. Every time the cat came in close range we would shout for our mum and run to an empty room. I got tired of being scared, so I started searching ways to befriend or make it seem like I wasn’t a threat to the cat. Found this and now me and the cat are tight 😎 (Well that’s what I think)

There is a tabby cat at my school, it's passive/aggressive. As long as you dont bother it to much until it makes her uncomfortable, you're on good terms with the cat. Sometimes after school, she hangs around in the canteen. I mostly give food if i have some leftover. She usually sits on my lap while i sit down. It has been months because of quarantine, recently i have been able to come to school for important matters. I didn't see her anywhere... If she fled, i hope she is still alive, living her stray cat life.

  • @jhowe5571

Yes, you're right about a person's behavior will "scare" a cat away, when the person approaches with loud, jumpy actions! Most cats will run and hide when a child enters their presence! I often use the slow eye blink and a very calm attitude and giving food/treats to gain the trust of a cat. It has worked with even feral cats! I found it works on squirrels, as well! Just the other day, there was a passing squirrel, with food in it's mouth, when I was entering the public library. I made some squirrel noises and tried the slow eye blink along with an uber calm attitude towards the squirrel. Surprise of surprises, the squirrel stopped and stared back at me!!! Then, we both calmly walked away from each other....

I’m now going to put lots more activities in their temporary ‘zoning’ room. I believe the male will tolerate a harness so I can take him for walks but the female won’t and will have to stay in the room for three weeks. I hope to make progress with her following your advice.

Doing so in 3 years we managed to get from a stressed running wild cat when vacum cleaning to a relaxed happy cat even in the presence of the allmighty vc!! Also I talk to her and she actually understands! It took a lot of patience and love but now we actually communicatw very well!
