So far we can confirm at least ONE White 80s Explorer was made
🟢reverb.com/item/77507444-gibson-80s-explorer-white?_aid=growsumo&gs_partner=Trogly
Even within one color it can make a difference. My cousin had bought a satin black Stratocaster when that color and finish combination was first released. After a little playing time he decided to trade it in on the gloss black Stratocaster . They sold the satin finish models but not as quickly or many as the gloss finish. A few years back out of curiosity he checked to see what it would've been worth has he kept it. The guitar originally cost him around $700 if I recall with a case. Wasn't quite ten years ago I think but the satin model was worth a little over $5k where the gloss was worth under $4k.
Those prices are absolutely ridiculous...all of them.
Agreed !!
Crazy.
Yeah, i never understood the appeal of gibson other than legacy. Although ive only played a few, but the ones ive played never wowed me. I have some ltds that played just as good, if not a little better.
I love how these look a ton, but they are stripped down spec without the stripped down price and that's a bummer.
I just can't forgive Gibson for missing almost every single spec on those 80s Explorers and Vs
Gibson will soon sue trees for using mahogany in their wood 🪵 😅 sigh
I’m so glad I picked up my Adam Jones Standard for regular pricing when I did.
I had an original 84 white Flying V. Was my first Gibson I bought as a 14 year old kid in 1994. It was $700 and it was all the money in the world at the time. (Paper route and lawn mow jobs). I sold it off about 10 years ago and I hate myself for it. This new one looks exactly like my 84 and I want one. Tho I still want the explorer more. But that v is still calling my nostalgia out!
I usually understand Gibson prices even though I know they’re high. But 2500 is ridiculous for these.
Going off the pictures I agree with you, but the white explorer is actually spectacular in person. It’s flawless unlike the ebony run.
@@cobrakai9969 It’s just a plain explorer. Like, it’s as basic as you could possibly get. No pickguard, no neck binding, no nothing. 2500 is too high. Doesn’t matter how flawless it is.
An Eric Clapton double cream Cream edition?
I want to see a new run of the LP with Explorer headstock
I do love my Gibson guitars, but come on. This is getting absurd. It’s a color, and not proprietary. What is Gibson going to do next, sue a manufacturer for making a black guitar with 6 strings…..Freaking ridiculous.
I got a used black one from GC for $1499 plus tax (no case) and returned it. It just feels too cheap. Plus the bridge was slammed and the action still wasn’t too low. Pickups did sound good. It’s like a basic Les Paul studio version of an explorer. I love the white but at the end of the day it will be made the same and be the same as the one I tried and that was a pass.
These white v’s and explorers just looks great! Just what we needed❤❤
These cost to much for what they are. A real mahogany EXPLORER is just $1999. Why pay more for lousy painted wood?
I never understood Adam Jones getting a signature in the first place. 20 grand for a guitar is insane!
Yeah his sound can be achieved with an epiphone with a SD bridge a kemper and mesa’s. But that being said the AJ standard may be the best modern built standard I’ve played a friend has one and I can’t put it down when I’m at his house, but he’s a TOOL head and has all the AJ epiphones and a few vintage silver bursts but if they do a Gibson USA of the V, my wife’s gonna be pissed. I will preorder that one. I saw TOOL in November he played the V the majority of the show.
Insane. Only for the overlords.
While I agree that $20K for any guitar is insane, people like what they like. It's not complicated.
Insane that I bought the Epiphone version for $1299 + tax. I mean it's nice and perfectly built with a sweet case, but it weighs a ton, as it should I guess. Just not my thing.
What, because *you* don't like Tool? Tell us what guitarists you like, so the rest of us can tell you that we never understood *them* getting a signature in the first place.
I still have my black 1984 Explorer that I bought at Guitar Center in Hollywood Ca the day they opened. It still sounds and plays amazing forty years later.
Nice! Does it have a Kahler?
I added a Floyd Rose and locking tuners. I love the ebony neck@@ralpherl5657
Irony. Gibson sued Dean for infringing on IP that "belongs to them", but has been generic since the 70s, and ALSO sues DiMarzio for IP that they've had since the 70s, but Gibson claims is generic.
Clownshoes.
Just buy vintage, excellent wood, original pickups, can't beat it,it's hot and miss with current
The white 80s explorer came too late. I just recently acquired an original 84 Explorer Designer Series (black with yellow/orange/brown stripes) all original with TOM bridge. Awesome guitar. Those white ones do look sweet and will probably be very popular.
That blue SG 😮 killer 🤘
Explorers look SO much better without a pickguard.
WHAT?? No way.
Maybe the project for the cream is a better Jimmy page number 2? Hopefully cause the old one had black humbuckers
Gibson's pricing really is a joke. What a rip off.
Considering they’re in custom shop prices for boutique and brand name guitars (where the CS will likely be of higher quality) it’d be shocking if they managed to move ANY of these.
@watersnortmoment3734 if people are paying $1500 for epis then certainly these will sell.
@@jordanpratt3821 oh yeah they'll definitely sell, but it's still a rip
@@jordanpratt3821 🎯
If That SG blue flame Maple Custom. With the blue clear overspray. Had 24 frets. It Would be Gorgeous. But. $7500. ?! Yoo much. Not even s titanium Floyd Rose?!?
That should be custom guitar prices lmfao. I don’t understand how Gibson’s still in business, I’ve never played a Gibson I’ve liked.
Don't worry in 3 months they'll have the same guitar w a few stickers for like 8k and call it the James Heffield Signature
Priced way too high!
I have an 84 designer V with a khaler. It’s so yellow and beat up. I love it
Exp and V should be $1499 or under
Agree
Love the white Explorer but that price? Oof. I'm a big Hetfield fan and would get a Snakebyte over one of these. That or look for an actual 80s Explorer.
Ugh. Just bought my first Les Paul and it has me wanting the Adam Jones Standard. FML.
Brazilian rosewood isn't as rare as you think. It's readily available for small runs.
It's the same line of rubbish Gibson use for korina when that's one of the cheapest woods you can get
@thatninjarider as a guitar builder. I can say it depends on the clarity and size of the Korina you are using. Actual good Korina is expensive.... black limba (Korina that has black streaking) is inexpensive.
Wrong.....
Oml the Tom’s tea is beautiful!! I love those kind of bursts, one of my favorite finishes is honeyburst
That gold stinger on the ‘57 gold top looked good, but not $10k good
20k for a guitar thats premessed up is mind blowing. Just buy a nice top play it for many years and then ask 20k cuz its "aged" i think its the biggest joke out there. I mean the reproduction guitars, like greenie, or adam jones.. ok i can kinda see if youre a die hard collector but 20k for some random company to beat up a brand new guitar? Lol f that
So Gibson thinks they should own the copyright to an acronym for them APPLYING for a patent. Reminds me of when Ohio State tried to copyright THE.
Or when the Fine Bros tried to copyright ‘react.’
Kiss air guitar strings
That's not what they're trying to do though, is it? They're trying to _cancel_ DiMarzio's trademark, in part by arguing it has become genericised. And if they successfully argue it has become genericised, that pretty much precludes them taking ownership of it in future.
That's like a recent thing I saw about the inventors of the game Trivial Pursuit. They were sued because they copied an entire book of facts by some publisher that had put an intentional error in the book to detect plagiarism if it gets used, forgot what it's called. ANYway - The judge threw it out because no one can copyright facts. Saw it on The History Channel - The Toys That Built America - (which is awesome).
I hope epi get the 80s White Explorer version... that would be a really good seller...
The purple website exclusive is gone also.
The Dimarzio patent thing. To me who grew up in the 70s you saw double cream you started to assume it was Dimarzio it was that look. In 1981 I bought two Dimarzio PAFs I still have them.
Now why didn't Gibson do anything for over 40 years? In my opinion they should have let it be.
I have seen a couple of accounts on instagram have the guitar in hand. It sold out within the hour of release.
Regarding: Double Cream Suit-GOOD!
I can confirm that there were a handful of white explorers released. The quality control is much better over the ebony ones. Absolutely flawless. They feel exactly like a 70s explorer in both weight and neck.
the slow motion pan of the black one around 1:25 you can clearly see they used a body contoured jack plate instead of a flat one and its standing off the body. COME ON GIBSON! all in all i wish they were ebony fretboard. i have a 98 black explorer with ebony board and from all i can tell, it's rare.
6:03...6 R9 Brazilian Rosewoods @ 50 each = 300.
If they did a run of reverse burst AJ LP it would be kind of neat.
I have a 2020 70’s White V. What’s the difference?
Beano burst, that’s why they need the double white
Wicked SG
Good Old House Of Guitars! My home shop!
Crazy alright!
Prices are just out of control!!!
Wondered if Gibson was going to discontinue the AJ Silverburst les Paul Standard. Noticed more than a few Guitar shops with them on sale (as low for a new one as what the demo shop was offering the demo's for). Used there has been a number for sale in my area. Most with something like " Gorgeous Guitar, like new, just not for me" on the ad. I liked them, checked out a couple and was not thrilled with the pickups.
I bought that lemonburst from Eddie's guitars (8:23) cause of the back a month ago...the murphy aging on this run is amazing. Please do a review you won't be sorry!
I'm generally not a big fan of all of Gibson's lawsuits, but I really hope they win this DiMarzio case. It's time to make "PAF" and "double cream" generic terms.
Everything is so expensive!
Seymour Duncan has the same pick ups names and colors so do other companies Chinese companies
I really want a cherry red explorer
The SG you showed with the gold hardware was incredible. The widowed SG was fantastic.
The blue sibling of that one is up for sale over in Austria.
That cherry SG with gold hardware is one of the GOTW series. I'd love for him to sell that to me 🤤
? 425 Explorer 1985.. the most arguably different explorer ever made..
I have not seen you talk about it or show it?? I'm interested why
They already have a Gibson adam Jones V it's under artist collection
I’m not sure patenting the color of the bobbins is valid, but it could be registered as a design trademark instead. However, if Gibson could prove that random 1950’s PAFs did have white bobbins under the covers (if they’re brave enough to pull the cover off) then it may be something that can’t be trademarked either.
I tried the ebony version of the 80s explorer and it felt CHEAP. They have a lot of nerve aaking that much $.
The white ones are beautiful in person. It’s flawless, very similar in weight and feel to a 70s explorer.
With Adam Jones I wonder if the epi versions stole the market. There are certain artists where I expect that would happen.
0:44 Played by Gary Moore too? Or?
I’m really loving your channel buddy. I am 47 and started getting into picking up my Guitars this past few months after not really been into it for about 15 years. I studied seven engineering but I was in college and I was in the music entry for a few years. Anyways, thank you for all your contact. I do have one question though. How many of the kirk Hammett Greenie guitars that are priced at 3199.00 were built?
Gibson will usually discontinue a guitar if the less expensive model is selling more than the expensive ones. Example: After decades of wait Gibson USA finally had a regular SG Junior for $1499.99 but that beat the Custom Shop 61' SG Junior reissue for $4k after just two years. Bait and switch.
I'm going to bash Gibson because the patent didn't specify color. But they did specify cover plate. So they should be suing anyone making covered humbuckers. Gibson wont win.
Gibson needs to chill before they sue themselves into trouble.
@JJ-mb5kt They’re already struggling because Gibson only holds value in the minds of the old heads now. These frivolous lawsuits will only hurt them in the long run if they actually try to innovate. It’d be funny if they tried to copy some of the new features on the Revstars and then got sued by Yamaha because Gibson set the precedent for these frivolous law suits.
Gibson will win easily
Double cream and PAF will always be associated with Gibson and they should be able to use those terms without prejudice. Those terms would simply not exist without them.
As guitar enthusiasts we should be backing Gibson on this one. If they win, everyone can use cream colored humbuckers again, not just Gibson.
So Seymore Duncan, Fender, PRS ect would be allowed to use the color.
if I am right I think Gibson only made the first batch of the White Flying V, I am not sure about the Explorer though.
so far, I've only seen one white explorer pop up on Reverb so they must be out there!
Only a handful of white explorers were released so far. They are beautiful, not cheap or bad QC.
I need a lefty one
Correct me if im wrong, but wasnt the PAF for the humbucker design itself, and not a color? BTW, Trog, your channel is the ONLY one I really try to not curse on, lol
Howdy everyone!!
DiMarzio's trademark on "double cream" is the dumbest trademark ever issued.
I prefer the black.
Dimarzio can just call them Original Double French Vanilla Humbuckers
Another Ace Frehley signature?
Some yo yo posted the white explorer on reverb for $4000 lol. Order from Gibson for $2499
A long with the white V at the same price of $2499
The Blue Widow SG is awesome, but $7500?
Looking for some help, By the white Explorers an Vs being exclusive does that mean that the only place to purchase them will be Gibson's Website? Or will they eventually get shipped out to other shops and dealers?
Only Gibson.com and eventually the Demo Shop. No dealers at this time
Thanks for replying! Currently debating whether to wait and chance getting this or to Buy the Mustaine V in Natural finish. Keep up the good work, love watching the vids, very informative!@@Trog
Cool show
With the price of Gibsons constantly going up, I feel like owning one is simply a pipe dream
Actually all the old big house brands, all of them, we all can name them, aren’t worth a tenth of what they ask for the mediocre crap they’re trying to sell.
As others have said, Gibson way over charges for Brazilian. PRS does it all the time for a few hundred dollars up charge. My early 85 Jackson Soloist Student has Brazilian and all it’s worth is for bragging rights.
Oh hell yeah. GK-55 Reissue with double creme Dirty Fingers coming up!
I love the commentary and times where you share your inner monologues. Thanks again for the awesome knowledge you always share with us!
As far as the Adam Jones guitars go, manufacturers really don't like people buying out limited runs simply to flip them for a profit. Keeping production until there are enough in the market that the value stabilizes around MSRP might not be a bad move. It actually establishes the selling price as the legit price. As time goes by the value should rebound. But that's how it should be. Something shouldn't have a "collector's premium" the day after it launches.
Yeezzz, $20k for a LP with a Bigsby, just because it has Tom’s name on it? Come on Gibson, are you building guitars for musicians or freaking wall hangers in some rich dudes man cave, and he probably doesn’t even play! I have been looking for a burst with a bigsby, but NO new guitar is worth $20k!
Younger guitarists don’t play Gibsons anymore. Your suggestion may actually be their strategy, selling to wealthy people that want to look like they play.
Gibby is marketing to rich Boomers and X Gen.....just like Harley Davidson ...
Not surprised that they discontinued the Adam Jones LP standard. They are everywhere and even tho a lot of people like silverburst (me included) not everyone wants Adam's name attached to their guitar. I truly believe that Cesar being a Jones fanboy, pushed Adam's signatures a bit too much and people just got tired of it. The same with the Epi AJ.
Is it me or does anyone else think of the actor from Joe Dirt that says life is what you make and tom favor each other.
Maybe the AJ is being discontinued for an Epiphone release with no artwork?
i wanted red :)
Not fond of the tone and volume knobs layout
I got my V in 85 brand new for $399. this is just stupid money.they could at least make the fretboard ebony.but what would it be then 3K?
Hey Trogly! Slightly off topic question prompted by video around timestamp 4:25. I noticed the bridge pickup seated dramatically higher than the neck pickup. And now I’m seeing it (?) everywhere. Is that intentional? By design? Personal preference? Am I hallucinating again? Too much egg nog? Thanks for the continued great content and happy New Gear!
If both pickups are perpendicular to each other the neck pickup will be closer to the strings(i think)
It’s more apparent on the bat wing pickguard sg’s, but it’s the same for most Gibson’s. It is because of the neck angle.
@@StagliafI guess I could see the rout being different because of body shape and amount of wood to work with in the bridge position. But wouldn’t you just set a CNC to uniform depth for both pickup positions? I’m just wanting to make sure I’m not missing some obvious magnetic/electrical principle that might account for such a disparity.
When the hell is Epiphone putting these out????
i would love a new angus signature 😂
and maybe the mike morton les paul and the phil x sg happens
Not a regular guys guitar
Bummed Hetfield doesn't seem to be getting a signature series like Kirk, he has some really great candidates. I know he was approached about a signature like 5-10 years ago, but i hoped the new management could make something happen. But some sort of 80s Explorer is better than nothing I suppose. The price seems a bit high, but it's the same as their other painted Explorers.
that blue sg custom looks like it has a face in the headstock emblem, kinda looked like a ninja turtle to me lol.
@trogly I'm hearing lots of rumors that Gibson is going to go majority direct sales as the economy tightens up.
From where?
@@flamedmahoganytable9749 industry people here in Nashville. Evidently the Demo shop and Mod collection were very successful betas for Gibby so they're gonna cut out middle men and increase their profit margins
You can already see it in their business model for sure! I feel it makes sense when "the times were good" but I'm scared that could come back to bite them with times are tough
@@Trog I don't know as someone who has made a purchase from the Gibson demo shop and who tries to keep up with the mod collection, I've kind of been asking why I would ever buy a Gibson from Guitar center. Sweetwater, Sam Ash or retailers like that. Granted I'm a professional musician. Not really a collector necessarily. But the level of detail that they provide as far as measurements for the guitar is concerned greatly helps me find the guitar I'm looking for. Plus regular run of the mill finishes are kind of boring to me now. So if I can get something that's kind of a one-off. And no really really well what I'm buying. I don't see why I would not buy directly from Gibson
@@TomSJazzBass Very good point. I've gotten several really nice Les Pauls from the Demo Shop for well under retail prices that are all MOD stamped one offs having had factory upgrades or mods. And all are super nice, very good quality, unique guitars. I know coming straight from the factory (via Reverb) what I'm getting and usually surprised that they're always better than described.
❤
Thanks Trogly-you help all of us understand Gibson offerings in the past and current! I may get a white explorer and decorate it....
