    Cans of chicken or tuna or salmon, rice cups, vegetable cups, soda crackers, Belvitas, Atkins bars. So many things you can load up that don't spoil and are easy to open and eat.
    Empty prescription bottles can carry instant coffee or tea or sugar or salt etc.

      @@dadbudgetadventures Crystal lite is 10 calories and pickles are 0 big misses and your 24 hour ration is 1740kcal at a price of $21.98... that is really really bad. It will also be super bulky. I can get freeze dried 72 hour kits for under 30 dollars that have over 6000kcals. You are literally going to the opposite way of what you'd want out of a MRE. You'd need to do at least 2000 calories a day and most army 24 hour MREs are 3000kcals or more for a single day.

      @@thomgizziz you’re missing the entire point. First, we aren’t in the army and are not going into combat. This is an example of products that are available, not a roadmap for copying exactly. Yes, I can buy freeze dried meals or military MREs but that’s not what I’m doing here. Most Americans can do with losing some calories from our diets and we aren’t exerting enough energy sitting in our homes or campsites to justify that many calories. I have some of the 72 hour food kits and they are great for what they are, but people need more than oatmeal and potato soup.

      If you want, ask historians or archeologists. Food preparation is one of the first things that made us human (along with a language). Especially for wandering people, making those food kits, you can just take out and eat, without too much hussle (like perheaps you are a part of a group hunting for more food for your tribe). And with those kits, you have a clear view on how much you have: 3 portions - 3 days. No brainer.
      As a service tech, I was doing a lot of "wandering" to customers (visiting service and maintenance). I learned to have at least a few snacks, a couple of instant noodles and some dry, smoked sausage with long shelf life in my trunk. Not much, just enough to survive a day or two in case of a bad situation. And those happen when you travel to fix machines . Even my gf knew that she would most certainly find a snack in my glove compartment when she needed. 😁

    • @ogi22
      @ogi22 Před 4 měsíci

      @@thomgizziz Being human makes me a human... Nice... And gorillas are gorlillas, because they are gorillas.
      Many species climb trees.
      Do you know why plants don't move too much? Movement requires energy. And taking that energy from the sun by photosynthesis don't make enough to allow for movement. Just a bit - flowers following the sun as an example. But there are plants that move. They just get more energy by trapping insects and consuming them for that extra energy.
      Eating just plants provide much more energy for the organism. Herbivores can move very nice. But you can check yourself how much time they spend eating. Hunting for food and eating other animals is much more efficient. Omnivores and carnivores can spend much less time for eating. Long before Homo Sapiens, our ancestors found, that if you heat some food over a fire, it works much better than eating it raw. It helped them to spend less time eating. They could also store their food for longer after cooking it. Cooked food provides much more energy.
      Do you know what organ uses the most energy in our body?
      It's a brain. About 1/5 of everything you eat and convert to energy is used by your brain. Chimpanzees, our closest relatives, use about half of that. But they don't cook their meals. AFAIK we (and our direct ancestors) are the only species to prepare their food like this.
      No, cooking as an activity here and now doesn't make us human. It is something that humans do.
      Cooking as a method of thermal food preparation allowed our ancestors to use that surplus of energy, to develop brains.
      The oldest traces of fire-roasting come so far from Africa and are dated around 780 000 years. Long before Homo Sapiens.

    You made great choices for your MRE. Last year, my brother got me a 12 volt "lunchbox." It works FANTASTIC! Road Pro also has 12-volt ovens and so on. Lighter socket or a rechargeable power station (12 volt, solar). No more expensive fast food/restaurants, we eat hot meals! I got my neighbor one for Christmas- she LOVES it! I also have 12-volt coffee cups for soup packets, coffee, etc. Folgers has instant coffee and hot chocolate and dried soup packets too. I buy them from the clearance racks every time I see them. When I was homeless, a woman gave me nearly 2 dozen of the dinty moore meals. Jerky, bacon jerky, 6 oz cans of meet, small cans veggies, dried fruits, pudding cups, single serving cracker/chips bags, canned soups/stews/chili. There's a wide variety of methods to make grab-and-go MRE bags tailored to everyone's taste.

Perhaps try half unheated and half heated too see if you would choose that entree again if you didn't have a way to heat it up. This was my first video of yours as well and I’m very impressed with your vid, Dad! I got a few excellent ideas for things to choose from. I normally home make everything for my outdoor kits but this gave me plenty of ideas for ready made things.
      I like the handy yogurt in a pouch, I have seen fruit purées in a pouch in the store as well. Single packs of mixed raw veggies are in most every store. Of course little packages of cheese and crackers or peanut butter and crackers are great to have on hand as a snack. M&M’s don’t melt so I like those. If I make my own trail mix I usually use M&M’s along with dried fruit and sometimes Cheerios or other cereals.

    Someone may have mentioned this guideline in one of your previous MRE videos, but I recall a rule-of-thumb from my years in the service about eating MREs in the field or on deployment. If you can’t eat all of the MRE, you should, at a minimum, eat/drink a portion of each of the main MRE components (not counting the accessories packet). The way military MREs are formulated, this rule-of-thumb provides the best well-rounded nutritional intake at any one go. This is especially important if all you’re eating are MREs. As you continue refining the nutritional aspects of your homemade MREs perhaps this could assist as you plan your menus.

    • @dadbudgetadventures
      @dadbudgetadventures  Před 5 měsíci +4

      I kinda mentioned that concept in passing but haven’t gotten too deep into trying to balance the meals for perfect nutrition. Right now it’s a thought exercise about looking past the basics and getting creative. Once I start building these with more thought and purpose beyond just a one stop shopping thing that will become more important.

    Thank you so much for posting & sharing this!!! Pop tarts & baby food type squeeze pouches are some of my go to's already when I'm feeling lazy but they really are packed with some vitamins & minerals. My other is usually dry cereal in a sandwich bag bc sometimes I even mix honey nut Cheerios with Golden Grahams or something like that in a pinch. It's nice to have different options & choices, kinda like a buffet. Convenient doesn't have to mean boring & I feel like your video proves that. I am a cheese lover & usually will munch on Goldfish, occasionally using them crumbled up over salad when I don't have shredded cheese so I will have to check out those Whisps. Also the pickles seemed curious & I'm glad you found them too! I also like that you were talking about more evenly heating things using a water bath bc it seems like something everyone might not know too.
