    This last November I went to my sister's and she didn't have ANYTHING for Thanksgiving dinner. I got up at 7 in the morning and went down to the Dollar Holler (as they call it because it is in a little saddle cut in the mountain) and I got EVERYTHING, and I mean everything for the Thanksgiving dinner. Including stuff for green bean casserole. Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, pumpkin and apple pie, green beans and onion topping, sparkling wine for the toasts, etc etc etc. I mean E V E R Y T H I N G. And I didn't brake my wallet doing it. Fed like 11 people after the "drop ins" even. Had a very HAPPY time with friends and family.
    Actually, it was one of the best Thanksgivings ever too.

    Another thing for a good cup of coffee, Folgers and i believe Maxwell House have a product like a tea bag, only its coffee. Puor hot water over it in your cup, let it steep a bit, and it makes a good cup of coffee. Each bag is sealed in a foil packet, so it has a good shelf life...

    • @JohnTBlock
      @JohnTBlock Před 4 měsíci +2

      @CrunchyPBJ oh, I agree completely. I can't stand instant coffee at all, but this "coffee bag" thing is not that, my friend. As I said, it's like a tea bag, but with coffee, sealed in a foil packet. If it had been their nasty-ass instant,I wouldn't recommend trying it!

    Another homerun, sir. I used to be an apprentice knife maker with Habilis Bushtools and did a lot of stuff with the Pathfinder School guys. Good times. Let's see a day hike with 3 meals cooked with different methods. Baro, mess kit, open fire. You do a great job of interacting with your fan base and that will serve you well!

    I was today years old when I found this channel! I'm a long haul airline pilot and I'm what you've described as a packett tuna or energy bar guy when it comes to my "pilot MRE" requirements. Often times we land from a flight when all food options including room service are closed, no walkable 24/7 convenience store options, or hotel "pantry" options. Thanks for giving me ideas beyond my tuna, sardine or occasional Wild Planet Salad back-ups I carry.

    Don't forget that you can use hot water for drink mixes too. In the winter, hot lemonade or tang can fill a need when you don't necessarily want caffeine. Sometimes, I am just tired of hot coffee, tea, or cocoa. Hot fruit juices can add variety. As far as the Folger coffee goes, you probably had too much water. Those packets are for a 6oz cup I believe. But most guys like their coffee to kick it's way out of the cup. We have been drinking Folger instant for a while. This works for my wife and I because she can tone hers down and add her flavored creamers, and I can add more coffee and drink it 'unadorned'. My brother turns his nose up at which I really don't get, it's brewed coffee that's been freeze-dried, not magic. I really try not to be a coffee snob.

    • @markfergerson2145
      @markfergerson2145 Před 4 měsíci

      @@thomgizzizThat’s definitely true. They’re kind of like audiophools who swear their gold plated speaker cables do some kind of undefinable magic to music but when blindfolded can’t tell their high dollar setups from a fifty dollar boombox.
      I’m not a coffee snob despite my wife and I subscribing to Gevalia some years ago. They carry some really really good coffees that make Folger’s taste like the proverbial dishwater by direct comparison, but at twenty or more bucks a pound I came happily back to Folger’s.

      Hot juices are great in winter especially if you get a little scratchy throat. Very soothing particularly if you can fortify it with some, uh, fermented grain product. Not too much, the last thing you want is to be loopy out in the wild.

    That pasta entree is a great idea. If it's a little bland, that can be helped with a six shooter of seasoning and that 1 dollar hot sauce from wal mart. That cooker is amazing, it's based on the German mess kit which so many other nations based theirs own.

    You are so right, the meatballs also remind me of chefboyardee meatballs in taste but has a more robust mouth feel. Rather salty on its own, but simmers down when paired with pasta or more sauce. I like smashing it up into a meat sauce.

    I use the Barilla pasta in my homemade MRE’s all the time. I got a deal on Italian sausage and meatballs in marinara sauce from MRE Depot awhile back. I bought a dozen of the pouches and built my meals using the various types of pasta available to accompany them. I also have a ton of the McCormick individual Italian seasoning packets. Helps to improve the flavor. Anytime Publix has the pasta on bogo I load up. I usually cook them together instead of just heating the pouches but that works in a pinch. They make a great main and it’s easy to source all the snacks and beverages from any dollar store. Great meal and great video.

    Here’s a tip I learned from a lady CZcamsr (Danielle) out of Maine…
    Keep 1”-1 1/4” binder clips handy. She keeps one clipped to the visor of her ball cap. It’s good for closing a foil retort bag while heating it (Incase you damage the zip closure) and also for keeping ‘leftovers’ (1/2 a tang or coffee tube etc) closed up for later use. You could incorporate one, or more, in your MRE depending on how many you might need.
    Whether it’s Folgers or Tasters Terrible, I double up on the amount of coffee recommended. 2 tubes in a typical “coffee cup”. The exception to this being the 3in1 Vietnamese (Nestle’s) coffee pouches

    Tasters choice is the only way to go on the instant coffee front. Not as good as real but passible. Also makes great iced coffee. Splash of hot water and instant coffee and a little sugar in a glass and mix. Then ice cubes a milk with a dash of cinnamon. Very refreshing

    I like to add some minced ginger and/or a little bit of cayenne pepper powder to the lemonade, tea, or other citrus type drink mixes. I thoroughly hate most sugar substitutes and the ginger/cayenne really helps to take the nasty sugar sub aftertaste out of it.
    This trick also works super well when you have used purification tablets on water. The ginger/cayenne is the best way ive found to make it take waaaayyy better.
    Btw, another great option on the mre dessert/walking snack is the indivual serving packs of nutter butter cookies or pork rinds/chicharonnes

    Just finished watching all your homemade MRE videos. The structure of the show is perfect for a binge watch. I would love to see you do a video for a store like Costco or Sam's Club. You might have to buy some mega packs, but the unit price would probably be substantially better.

You really have to be careful how you mix it 1 teaspoons coffee too 8 or more ounces water as it can be very strong and bitter.. I do love the meatballs from DG. My local DG doesn't have the cooked pasta, but I believe I can get it at WM. The $1 tuna and chicken packets add protein, small package and can be paired with mac&cheese ready foods. I use these on road trips. Obertos jerky also has bacon jerky- pair that with powdered eggs and powdered milk for a good breakfast. Vienna sausage, the small 3 oz cans of meat pair with pasta or instant rice; add veggies. Those coffee sticks only work with 6 oz of water. I have a 16 oz cup- I use two. I do like folgers and tasters choice too. Things like powdered eggs/milk/"just add water" mixes can be part of a "kitchen kit" that has spices, flat wear, cooking stove and so on. Crackers instead of bread as they last longer. I was homeless for nearly 3 years and lived in a tent with no frig. I do like your videos and they're very informative. Could save someone's life in a pinch. Add these and the kitchen box to your vehicle when traveling any time of year- you never know what could happen or how long help will take to reach you.

    If you've got a good asian market in your area you have access to some of the best instant coffee ever. South Koreans apparently take their instant coffee seriously. My daughter is addicted to the maxim mocha gold, a premix mocha with cream and sugar. Each sachet is about a half cup's worth, so use two.
    Also, my local asian market has these wonderful retort packed Indian dishes that are fantastic (though can be spicy) and more substantial than you'd expect. One of those retort packs plus an uncle ben's rice in retort is a chunk of food.

    I saw those meatballs on the shelf a few months ago and had to try them. They're practically identical to the meatballs and marinara MRE menu, and in my opinion are definitely serviceable. As far as the drink mixes go, citrus seems to play very well with artificial sweeteners. Country Time lemonade in particular has a pretty inoffensive zero sugar option.
    I've been thinking about scoping out Aldi for this kind of challenge. It seems like snacks and sides would be pretty varied and interesting, but mains might be hard to come by outside of your usual suspects.
    As a side note, Hormel Compleats have really taken over in terms of my personal homemade ration mains. The pot roast with carrots and potatoes is particularly good, even outside of it being essentially canned food. I know you've taken a look at them before, so I just want to second that recommendation.

    IF you are actually storing these to use then I would suggest either a much more robust "accessory kit" or a "chef pack" of spices and add-ins you can add to your mess kit. I would make a small fudge or chocolate bar - or if you have a protein bar you like as a standard as well as salt/pepper/sugar packs and pepper sauce. (if we were going to the field we found we could ask the mess SGT nicely and he would make sure that sort of stuff was on the "MRE" table at lunch) Sealed instant coffee and tea bags last forever.
    My ziplock had sugar packets from the mess, because I like my MRE coffee sweeter than one pack of sugar.
    Since the swedish mess kit doesn't have a canteen in the middle you can carry spices/tea/sugar/coffee in the kit.
