- January 30, 2017 | Suraya Mohamed - When Christopher Gallant was featured in Forbes' 30 Under 30 list, the testimonial came from none other than Elton John, who said, "When I hear his voice, I just lose it." The two even performed Gallant's song "Weight In Gold" together back in September.
Gallant performed a stripped-down version of that hit when he came to the Tiny Desk earlier this month, and preceded it with another of his best-known songs, "Skipping Stones." Written with Jhené Aiko, that tune radiates sultry intensity and passion; here, the talented Dani Ivory (who's performed as a touring member of Imagine Dragons) sits in for Aiko.
Ology, Gallant's 2016 debut, is up for a Grammy next month - for Best Urban Contemporary Album - and another of its falsetto-driven highlights opens this three-song set. On the record, "Bourbon" is produced with a funky, old-school, Prince-like drum track, but here, a steady drum beat grounds the hypnotic song just as well, if not better. Best of all, "Bourbon" gets a welcome bonus at the Tiny Desk: a guest rap by Saba, a charismatic rising star and frequent Chance The Rapper collaborator.
Ology is available now:

Still think this is one of the most slept on tiny desk concerts. His voice is impeccable
With the emergence of acts like Gallant, Anderson Paak, Yuna, Brent Faiyaz, Bryson Tiller, Dvsn, Kehlani, Leon Bridges, Dram, Sampha, Ari Lennox, Ro JAMES and countless other great new acts I think R&B/Soul music will be thrusted backed into the forefront of popular music!
I hope so
don't forget Khalid
Darrel Be can't forget JMSN
are these the really good current R&B musicians?
I mostly listen to Jazz (older bebop and jazz ballads), but I really like this. Any more recommendations?
Yes they're current musicians but not all strictly R&B. Nao, Abra, Shura, The Internet, SZA, Jorja Smith
he's so expressive when he sings, love that
He's got an effortless falsetto. Am I the only one who prefers the live version opposed to the actual records?
his energy is through the roof live
Eryz Canlas I saw him at Okeechobee fest back in March. easily one of the top 3 performances.
Yes 1 million times
Tha KeeMan either or for me both sound amazing
Most def npr has this shit figured out idk why he doesn't sing like this on most his live performances
This tiny desk concert has enhanced my life. Thank you
Same here. My life has a lot more color now! I'm a musician/singer and I spend a lot f time watching other artists. This channel is for people like us!
This channel has definitely enhanced ours!
YESSSS!!!!!
Amy O 100% agree, all Tiny Desk concerts keep enhancing mine too :) Stay Blessed
I love Gallant so much! He’s full of talent and he’s unbelievably underrated.
yessss Saba you killed that shit
I love how Gallant moves to the beat of the music while he's singing. You can tell he's feeling it.
His falsetto is phenomenal 🙌🏿🙌🏿
jesus, he sounds the EXACT same as he does on the album. no auto tune no nothing. 👏🏽👏🏽 beautiful
Man I love Saba. Pure positivity
It's becoming more and more apparent with every passing day that it is impossible to listen to Weight in Gold too many times. What a talent
Joshua Carrig SOVTRUE
7 years later and its still impossible!
What a tight sound! It feels like the band was playing their whole life together.
I SECOND THIS!!
As a musician, I was going to say the same thing. Very tight.
Thanks :)
I love how happy saba looked during his verse, he killed it. such a great performance all around
Gallant probably has one of the best voices in modern times, can't wait to see how far he's going to go
DΔVO dvsn
andy wang dvsn live is nowhere to gallant imo
In 2019 I saw him in Vegas. He’s amazing live
@IM O just gave it a listen, yeah you right his raw voice is better than I expected. still prefer gallants chest voice much more powerful
Man, Gallant has got some pipes! 😯
I wish I worked at NPR so I could see all these live.
Is Gallant's falsetto the best in the game right now? It's certainly the best I've heard, so much power and color in his voice. And his range is insane.
He's also in for best teeth in the industry beside Anderson Paak.
+Lec sjfsadk and Anthony Fantano
BEST TEETH IN THE GAME
Maxwell and Michael Jackson has the best falsetto I've ever heard.
Luke James has an amazing falsetto as well
Now this is why I subscribe to NPR Music
DAMN! This man is amazing! not just his voice but his body language while performing is beautiful. So confident and unique. Handsome as shit too! I just caught a crush in less than 4 mins!
Every single note from Gallant and the band is perfect.
He channels something ethereal. He's hardly even there- it's beautiful.
gallant is going places
joalco3 straight to the nba
Gallant is just so unparalleled in how amazing his stuff is. Ology is a brilliant album.
that girl with her keys totally fire
first thing i noticed
Wendy and Lisa's baby
His falsetto on Skipping Stones, good God, it's incredible. Added this straight to to my library on Apple Music. I skipped over him after seeing a few meh reviews, but this just sold me. His lyrics aren't too special, but like Maxwell, his voice is enough to keep me glued to incredible vocals.
I disagree with the lyrics part. His lyrics on Bourbon, Percogesic, and Dynamite with Brandy are top tier. Ology is his best work lyrically imo.
you can tell that he is just a guy who loves music with everything in his soul
I just recently heard Gallant for the first time in his collaboration with Korean artists, Tablo and Eric Nam on Cave Me In, which I can't get enough of. This was an amazing Tiny Desk Concert, thank you!
A Peckham SAME!
Cave me in introduced me Gallant too! He's a true talent.
I saw him perform on some late night talk show a few months ago and have not been able to get enough of his music ever since! Extremely happy he got a tiny desk concert!
It was probably Fallon, when he tore the stage up I knew he was one to watch!
for me it was fallon!! man was amazing there
ALovelyScarf the james corden performance was great.
thats the happiest rapper ive ever seen haha
You haven't seen DRAM then
^^!! LMBO!!
rapper??
ddrckmamafine he's talking about Saba
Paul van Maldegem oh thanks
HIS HIGH NOTES 😍 up there with Miguel & The Weeknd
Bohn Baratheon i think he is passed them more like Maxwell and Eric Benet
Bohn Baratheon yess. His Falsettos reminds me of Maxwell.
Bohn Baratheon I'd say better, both the weekend and Miguel are phenomenal too!!
terrell jenrette Actually, I think Miguel and The Weeknd have a stronger and clearer falsetto than gallant...gallants falsetto is little more faint, raspy and weaker than both of there's in a live setting. Just cause they're more popular don't mean they can't sing with best of them and Miguel and Abel are no joke at all, they sing extremely well and can do alot more with their voices compared to gallant.
His falsettos are so effortless, it’s the most beautiful thing I have heard
he makes me miss Maxwell!
He is so underrated I could cry😭❤️❤️🏆
this touched my soul
That intro to "Weight in Gold" is so iconic...
And I love how excited Saba is (BTW he has a lovely smile :))!
This version of Bourbon is funky, it's a great remix/revision. It's just full of life.
Definitely got the Usher and Maxwell vibe!
Usher + Maxwell fusion right here. Band is tight too, man.
#InThePocket
Malcolm A exactly what I was thinking LOL
I said the same exact thing on his only one song... this is a talented brotha!
Exactly what I said! ❤️
Can't be a bad thing 😅
i was so hyped when saba came outta nowhere. this group has such a great group sound
The flawless falsetto✨🤗😩🙌🏽😍
gallant is so damn talented
Fr
I can relate to the drummer having his eyes closed because the groove is smooth and tight!
Cj Herbert who’s the drummer??????
Watching/listening to these desk concerts at the end of the day are one of the ways to self care and self love.
The production value in this cubicle is significantly higher than on his album. Hmmmmm. Great listen. So happy to hear this.
Mannn this performance is so slept on. Truly one of the best from NPR.
Keep doing good music, Gallant! Don't ever stop! Don't ever change! Save this generation!
What an incredible vocalist.
Get this man on a track with Leon Bridges
p a r a \ \ a x holy shit I would fucking lose it 😭😊
Hope you see this KI, but when Leons album dropped Gallant put up a short Instagram video of him singing the song nd they talked and swapped phone numbers over a possible future collaboration.
That range! My goosebumps have goosebumps.
Brilliant, also props to the drummer, very tasteful playing
R&B world is getting richer and richer thanks to the artists like Gallant
If you didnt get get chills in the first 60 seconds of this; this isnt is for you. #unreal
Russell Westbrook got vocals lol
baaaahahahahaha im done!
He looks more like marcus smart imo.
Ya Man Brandon Tyler lol hilarious!!
cant look at him without seeing it now
Holy fuck, that's hilarious
We can add Gallant to the short list of great falsetto singers... Marvin Gaye, Prince, Maxwell, Luke James...
Gallant and Saba are gonna blow up this year
well considering the fact gallant is nominated for a few Grammy's I'd say he already has
One of the best R&B singers ever. Rekindled my interest
He sounds a lot like a young Maxwell! I love it.
Favorite male artist for sure 👌👌👌👌
His talent was clear from the beginning, i Hope 2017 will be his year
My old biology teacher put me on to this guy. Glad he did.
Man I heard him sing in at 2019 Afropunk and I can assure you HE SOUNDS AMAZING! I have never heard a male singer in out generation sound this good live.
Ology was the best album of 2016!
What a soulful performance ! Gallant is an incredible singer who feels the music so deeply and completely . Dani is great as well as the rest of the band . They are tight . I'm going to be following this very talented group . Thanks again, NPR . These Tiny Desk Concerts are a delightful gift to all listeners . The talent presented is almost always tops , and the tech folks are flawless . George Lewis, Sr
Natural performer this kid is. Found him late night about a year ago, by total chance. Went and purchased his LP immediately, been on my platter rotation alot lately. His voice is absolutely magnificent, almost zero vocal rub from his album to live performance. A true talent here, wish him well.
he would sound nice singing womans work by maxwell
alix hanes omfg yes
Same thought crossed my mind
Actually This Womans Work is a Kate Bush song, a Maxwell cover, but yes he would kill it.
Yes!
I just thought about that....I totally agree.
This is pure therapy!!! ❤️❤️❤️
That stripped "weight in gold". Almost cried tears of joy
not sure why i’m only now seeing Gallant’s tiny desk from 2017! he is one of the BEST vocalists in the world. He never misses.
Just love when Saba just steps in and just starts rapping like no one's there at all. Who agrees.
Definitely!!!
gallant is incredible. along with the band, saba and dani. beautiful voice. how did this get 200 something dislikes is beyond me
His falsetto is so piercing. He doesn’t hold back his vocals and never sound whiny. Good job gallant. Your music is great.
Love Gallant - so talented and underrated.
I would LOVE to do something like this in Africa.. Cameroon in particular.
Tiny Desk concert heals my pain .
Weight in Gold is such a spiritual moment.
How did i just find out about this GEM!!!!!! Blessed for him to have a tiny concert
What a voice range... Thrilling during the whole the video
She killed the keys🔥💯
Saw him perform at Afropunk 2016= amazing voice
Just watched him perform on NPR's Tiny desk concert= just as amazing
Gallant is the truth
Man I have watched this like 30 times, played it for my 8 year old so and all he could say is how does he sing like thatt?!!! This is my favorite tiny desk!!!
Stunning, truly a masterpiece of musicians and talent
I had chills throughout the whole performance
i love his voice!
Man I love this dude!!! He is truly music!! That voice and lyrics.. Something to behold!
It's so nice to see a non studio artists. In other words artist who can hit all the note of their songs outside the booth.
There are to many studio modified artists out there today.
I just hope he wins his grammy nom ... ❤ in love
saw his video feat tablo and eric nam a few weeks ago..
much respect :)
That vocal range is gnarly
Such an amazing performer. His show was without a doubt THE best that I had ever been to.
He opened for Maxwell, and did an Amazing job in Dallas! He’s definitely slept on bc his vocals are on point! He gained a fan ❤
✨Oh my god, instant chills, head to toe✨
One of my favorite albums from last year and best discoveries.
Krista Roman yum
Saw these guys open for Sufjan a while back! Love the laid back sound in this video, especially in Weight In Gold. He has an insane voice ❤️
King of falsetto!!!
Thought I was hearing some Usher new incarnation. So much talent.
This hit the SPOT.
He is absolutely incredible as a singer and performer, singer and arranger, writer, artist as a whole!
What an amazing instrument Gallant has. I’m so glad that I can watch him grow. An amazing talent that can’t be denied. You go BOY!!!!
Gallant can do no wrong
what a voice
He has such an incredibly unique voice wow
GALLANT THE G.O.A.T!!!! my favourite tiny desk concert ever!
