- Carlos was the last native speaker of Guazacapán Xinkan, an indigenous language spoken in Guatemala for generations. BYU linguistics professor Chris Rogers has spent his career studying and preserving dying languages like Guazacapán Xinkan. In 2008 he visited Carlos and listened and recorded his language so that it wouldn't be lost after his death. Today Carlos's language lives on as local people learn Xinkan in classes.

Dr. Rogers was my linguistics professor at BYU. He is an extraordinary linguist, teacher, and person.
I am from puente arce, el salvador. Neighboring Guatemala. I am stunned to learn more and more of the xinca heritage. Wondering if I am really a descendant of xinca. I will probably never know for sure....sad
@Y magazine Thank you soooooooooooo much for this Y magazine channel & for all the work it took to save this ancient language Dr. Rogers & everyone that had a part in this & all the wonderful things you have been blessed with to be able to do.
It makes me happy to see an effort to preserve culture rather than wash it away.
