Driving On WA SR-2 North In 1983 (Spokane)

  • Back in 1983, The Washington State Department of Transportation drove North on SR-2 and recorded video to document the highway. This was part of a project that photographed/videotaped the states highways every couple of years. This video now resides at The Washington State Archives who were kind enough to share it.

Wow, takes me back. To those who say so little has changed -- OMG. You can start with the fact that we pass three drive-in movie theaters on the way out of town -- the Auto-Vue, the Y and the Starlite. And so much more.

Im not from Spokane nor have i ever been there lol but i noticed that a few of the businesses in the 1983 video (in the area of Division and Lincoln) are still there. The gas station and the Steer Inn behind it. And much of US 2 north of the split with 395/Division was still 2 lane and not very developed.
I could make out where the future (circa 2009?) interchange with the North Spokane freeway would be by locating some nearby power lines.
It’s interesting how things change within the course of your life and to see how things were the year before you were born (I was born in 1984 lol).

The lack of traffic!!! Unbelievable - seems like only a quarter of the cars in 1983 on roads that are now so crowded you wait for two light changes to get through an intersection.

The Diamond bowl that was torn down in about 1992 and then sat as an empty lot for 30 years until Maverick finally built a gas station there. That always peeved me. I loved diamond bowl as a kid.

Such a cute city! Love the area but the smoke and long and grey winters have gotten to me over the last 2 years so sadly this is my last year in Spokane! I’ll absolutely cherish these last few months I’m here for sure but I’m so ready to be in a different region of our beautiful country 🇺🇸 probably somewhere a little more green and warmer ❤

I remember being around Spokane in 1983. I remember when they changed lower Division to a one-way street for some reason. Look at those telephone booths. I've been to a lot of those places over the years: The Zips (which is still there), The General Store (Still there), The Cathay Inn (Still there with the new building, ate there last week), The K-Mart (gone along with the movie theater they built there years after this and is now where the Lowes is), The White Elephant (Closed after the 'pandemic' and they are building a Panda Express there now). They Kentucky Fried is still there. Used to get food there in the 90s.
The North Division Six. I saw lots of movies there in the 80s and 90s. I probably saw Return of the Jedi seven times that year(which wasn't easy, because I lived in Cheney). I don't think it was playing at the North Division theater, though. I can't believe that everything on the west side of the road turns to trees once you get up to where the North Town Mall will be. I don't remember that, but again that was a long time ago.
It's weird seeing open fields where the Target and Best Buy are now. Then you've got the drive-in theater where the Newport theater would be later. Then it closed and was dilapidated for years before they finally tore it down.
    Some other observations:
3:09 Where the Comic Book Shop was in the early 90s. I got comics there everyweek after I got my license and a car.
4:41 Didn't know that used to be a Dairy Queen. I don't think there is anything there now.
5:55 There is a Staples where the Rosauers was there.
6:49 Where the coin shop eventually was and I think still is.
9:55 Looks like the Taco Time is there already.

As an 80's kid. I still have good memories from back then. Always liked seeing the spinning 76, when we would drive by. Going to the Dairy Queen that eventually became New Harbor (miss New Harbor too). Countless White Elephant memories...It should have stayed around! The old Pizza Hut locations...Straw Hat Pizza, Chuck Wagon. Anybody remember the Panda burger joint too?! I miss Pizza Haven in the Flour Mill and, Godfather's Pizza as well!

I have only lived in Spokane since 2012, but this was pretty cool to watch! I do see many things that are gone and some businesses that have been here for half of forever. I watched it with my husband who is from Spokane and he remembers a lot of what was in this video. Also, it is kind of funny to see that some people couldn't drive back then either! Edited to add that I noticed the Cathay Inn sat in a different position in this video, versus the way it is now. My husband said he couldn't remember exactly, but thought there might've been a fire at some point?
