I remember as a kid wanting the higher power to be Jake Roberts sooooo badly.
The rebooking What Culture did a few years back must have made you super happy then
Unfortunately, Jake was way too messed up at the time
I was hoping against hope the owen hart thing was a massive hoax and the higher power would end up as owen. I was 19 at the time but just did not want to believe owen was dead.
I was just going to comment that I saw a scenario pitched similar to that years ago on WrestleCrap's "Rewriting the Book" feature where instead it was Jake "the Snake" Roberts who was revealed as the Higher Power. Imagine where they could have gone with that.
@@cobrakaiisback4709 same
I'll never unhear Simon saying "Hower Power" in place of Higher.
Yeah. I thought the Higher Power was gonna be either Jake or at the far outside possibility, a debuting Raven.
There’s only two wrestlers that could’ve pulled off the higher power gimmick: Kevin Sullivan and Jake Roberts.
Davey Jones Christopher Daniels
I thought the higher power was originally going to be Jake 'the snake' Roberts?
Was about to mention this.. I don't think it was just somthing pitched but quashed because of liability issues.. He was however the perfect fit such a shame it didn't happen
Ah rumours of the day were wild as some were much harder to prove than now where everyone knows the outcome of everything 6 months before it happens.
It's spelt HOWER POWER geez
I always thought it was supposed to be Don Callis as The Jackyl
@@alexanderball6326 this is true also
I may be in the minority that thinks so, but I absolutely loved Papa Shango back then. I think it could've easily grew into something good and better than what it started off being. I could totally see him feuding with Ultimate Warrior (which did actually happen), Undertaker, Macho Man, Jake The Snake, and others. I didn't enjoy Kama as much as Papa Shango, hell even as good as Godfather was...I still wonder what things would be like. Had he stayed Papa Shango, it probably could have gotten better.
I agree, he was no less ridiculous than the Fiend is today.
Simon is a lame
@@marcuslee1927 Lame isn't a noun, clown.
@@skyatollah2skyharder276 It is, you lame
Oh, and I would've loved an Attitude Era, SHANGO
If they had held on for just a couple years, they could have had HIM as the Higher Power
vince is a "junior" that is why he depises the term which explains:
rey mysterio
chavo guerrero and chavo classic
and my favorite, the million dollar man ted dibiase and his son ted dibiase.
The Undertaker/ Sable thing sounds pretty good to me.
If you want an idea of what Sable might have looked like as a goth wife for Undertaker, google Chaos! Comics Lady Death.
I frickin _loved_ *Papa Shango* as a kid 🎩💀
His feud with the Undertaker was legendary
A lot of people did, these people think they're talking for everyone when they say their own opinions
@@orangemaniabrother2232 it's because they didn't grow up during that era and watched it back as adults, which obviously gives you a different perspective. It's why I don't like John Cena now, he's corny as hell.
@@c0pyimitati0n but he said WWE wanted a more adult show, Shango is kinda based off a James Bond character, he's no less adult than the Undertaker or Kane, it annoys me when people say the WWF at the time was more serious in the attitude era cos it reeeeeeally wasn't, and part of the reason I didn't like WWF so much at that time, but with that in mind Shango would have worked extremely well.
@@orangemaniabrother2232 you've got some valid points there
I actually liked the HeadBangers
I know Jake The Snake Roberts was in the discussion for higher power, but trying to name somebody different I would go with Paul Bearer or Ted Di Biasi as he was the one bringing the Undertaker to WWE in the first place.
That could've worked spectacularly, since they did have a teaming during Undertaker's feud with Ultimate Warrior. Plus, if Jake were in the right state of things at the time, he could've played a SUPREMELY effective faction figurehead.
Paul was already part of the minstry so would of made no sence and ted was still with wcw at the time
Bret Hart.
I loved the “Hower Power” reference.
"You know what I'm talking about mummy." Simon miller 2020
I thought that The Million Man was going to be "The Higher Power" back in the days. Him or a more sinister Brother Love.
I really thought back then Kevin Sullivan was going to be the higher power
I also heard Jake Roberts was a name suggested for the Higher Power. Never liked the idea of an evil more powerful than Taker though.
I mean Vince is more evil than taker irl
i love these kind of videos keep them coming
fact: if you can't handle a storyline like the bobby and lana storyline , then you wouldn't be able to handle the attitude era *AT ALL*
Seth Colby I never experienced the attitude era firsthand unless you count the Monday Night Wars Docu-series so I am legit curious; Did attitude era storylines of the Affair variety last as long as the Lana/Rusev/Lashley storyline?
Usually just as long if not longer. From what I remember about the AE there were way too many segments and very little wrestling. And the matches that there were on Raw and Smackdown were usually between 5 to 10 minutes on average.
@@TheArremNoire some were long some were short but most of those storyline were stupid yet entertaining.
No fact!
Papa Shango legitimately scared the crap out of me as a kid.
I was a WCW kid and my mom wouldn’t let me watch WWF because she said it was “too bad” for a kid to watch. My cousin watched it and I went to his house one day and watched RAW with him and that was when I first saw Kane. Kane legit scared the absolute shit out of me when I first saw him. Haha
I would have liked to have seen the story line where Papa Shango was behind Bob Backland turning heel. That's just me though.
Simon, don't feel bad about not getting the "Venis" last name thing; I can't tell you how long it took me to get the "Prince Albert" name, and I was 17, 18-years-old then...
I was 30 when i was told what that meant. Wwe is really gross sometimes
What does Albert's name mean
Darnel Anglade a “Prince Albert” is a piercing where the “earring” enters the urethra, & exits out the bottom (or top) of the tip of the penis. One is called a “Prince Albert” & one is “Prince Charles”. Idk which is which 😂
Is it just the fa t that Venis Rhymes with penis... i dont get it...
Similarly, when I was about 10, my parents asked me what Al Snow's "Head" meant. And I had zero idea of any innuendo or connotation behind the name. It took me several more years before I got the joke
Thought they were going to get Don Callis (The Jackal) as the Higher Power.
Ive Always heard it was Chris Daniels
Surprised he didnt mention Goldust getting silicon "gimmicks" or Prichard reprising the Brother Love gimmick and managing Taker against Bearer & Kane.
I wanted papa shango to be the "higher power" and i still do
Boogeyman was basically the updated Shango. I'd still like to see Papa Shango in the Rumble instead of another Godfather appearance.
Papa Shango was a great character and not offensive. This would have worked in the attitude era, but his godfather character was great too.
The NEW higher power!! REPO MAN!!!
NO NO NO, It's....THE SHOCKMASTER!!!!
Wow, Taker bride Sable.... that would have kept her in the company for much longer. Every storyline he was in would have had an extra twist that made it that more popular
They could of had kane or paul bearer as the higher power to unite the brothers of destruction.
paul was already part of the ministey and kain was not talking at that point
A "howwa" power
Or Howard Power
Lord Howard Power, he invented the colour yellow
Power Hour
Was Christopher Daniels doing the fallen angle in 1999? Didn’t he only just debut? TNA only formed in 2002 so I think you made that entry up to extend the run time
No the had the gimmick before TNA
I disagree with the Daniels as the higher power thing. Gangrel said himself, Daniels was supposed to be in the Brood. Gangrel, Edge and Daniels. But Vince didn't like Daniels due to his size. Though he wasn't a fan of Christian either... HOWEVER, Edge wanted it, and they had a lot in for Edge. So... They went with what Edge wanted.
I've heard the Daniels thing as the higher power before, but it doesn't make sense. Vince had already said no to Daniels... And how could he seem equal or better than Undertaker... So... 🤷♂️
awkc 63 agreed it makes no sense because of where Daniels’ career was at that point, a member of the brood does make sense. The person in charge of the biggest storyline going at the time is crazy
That Vince impersonation jc that make me lol everytime
Definitely wasn’t expecting that Spineshank reference. Use to love them in high school and had all their albums on my Sony minidisc Walkman.
I for one would have loved Papa Shango 2.0
Absolutely
"Hower power" - Simon Miller
2020
Undertaker screwed up his line during a promo and said "hower power".
@@ronn4238 I didn't know that. I only started watching WWE again shortly after the ministry stuff
"He would sit in the ring brooding away …"
This is why I love Simon.
😎👊
The "new" age outlaws is an exception 🤣😂 3:37
Thanks for the Spineshank reference! One of the most underrated bands ever.
Val Venis was awesome!!! One of my favs from that time!
A Spineshank sighting of all things and of all places. Simon, you beautiful man, you.
Papa Shango 2.0 could have worked. I was disappointed as a kid when Vince took the hood off to reveal he was the Hower Power.
Undertaker was not with Sara in 1997 he was still with Jodi Lynn
Spot on. What culture don't really research their material. They need to step up their game
But this occurred in 1999.
@@miketesterman that is true as he divorced Jodi that year the married Sara in 2000
6:27 How is *Spineshank* the _most late 90's thing_ 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ I think *Limp Bizkit* ticks that box a bit more.
Id say limp bizkit hit there peak around 2001, so I wouldnt call em stupidly late nighties
That the first time anyone has said spineshank in a video, I didn't know anyone knew that band. I've never met anyone that has.
@@wayneallen408 I saw them open for *Slipknot* around 1999/2000 alongside *Amen* it was an absolutely _killer_ show 🤘
This comment section gave me a new disease...
Spineshank was never a thing, so it’s impossible they were bigger than Limp Bizkit.
Simon's Vince impression is too damn funny. About pissed myself in public.
I miss attitude era when wwe was amazing
Back when it still had balls
Was thinking Jake the Snake Robert's will be the higher power. Especially with his "trust me" line.
Never trust a snake
I love that Vince McMahon impression hahaha
The Edge being a deaf mute thing would be weird... Especially with the vignettes showing him beating up a random guy on the streets.
Friggin love Spineshank and the Attitude Era. Btw the Sable thing actually sounds compelling
No Simon, I liked Papa Shango as a kid too. Oh and again, please don't die against the death machine. X
Just wanted to take a moment to say that according to Triple H, The Game gimmick was never intended for Owen and it came about from him saying he was the game in a promo. According to him that is.
He said the same thing on an episode of Wikipedia Fact or Fiction a few days ago. I had always heard it was meant for Owen too. That interview was the first time I had heard otherwise.
@@Principaledpragmatist That's what made me bring it up, I just saw that interview yesterday.
I remember Daniels name being rumored around back then. After it was Vince the report of his character work on TNA being noticed etc etc was also going around.
Edge was ORIGINALLY supposed to be Val Venis. He wrestled under SEXTON HARDCASTLE
well we all know how Minor League that Vals gimmick got him, so EDGE was probably the better gimmick, god knows how that deaf mute bit wouldve fared him though had that passed, this is why Vince Russo was fired by WWE and hired by WCW, cause the guy obviously was on crack.
That spineshank reference 😂
Commissioner Mick Foley once threatened to book Albert as George Steele Jr in indy shows on an episode of Heat. I remember this somehow.
Spineshank was dope lol
I'd say the Albert thing was nixed because Vince hated being called Junior by all the old wrestlers who worked with his father and grandfather.
Technically, he's not a Junior, since he and his father have different middle names.
Yeah I have one, alot of people don't realize that Owen Hart, & NOT Triple H. was originally supposed to be The Game before his untimely passing on May 23, 1999 in Kansas City!
Liked for the 'Hower Power" reference.
lol "DDD Dummy Boyz"
I remember reading that Papa Shango's return was dropped because Kane had just debuted and the WWF thought having Shango back would damage the impact they wanted Kane to have
Prior to Kanes Debut. I read in the dirt sheets that Papa Shango was going to resurrect Kane from the dead to begin the Kane vs Taker story... Can you imagine USA airing that? Paul Barer and Shango digging up a body and doing a spell on it...
I thought they were gonna call Christian “The Crock”, not “The Lock”!
George the Animal Steele, Jr? Did I shave my back for this?
The Daniels stuff is surely wrong. He was signed to a developmental contract in 1998. The guy had done nothing of note until that point.
upvote for the spineshank reference
Shango rocked.
I didn't hate the Lord Tensei gimmick, didn't love it either.
damn, my angsty late teen self would have loved to see a gothic sable.
Hower Power is the best kind of Hower
Not sure how true it is, but a few weeks after Meltzer reported on the Papa Shango character returning he reported that Paul Bearer's big secret reveal was going to be a returning Shango instead of the debut of Kane. Bearer cut a promo about how there were 3 graves, and the third was supposedly going to be Takers grave but Shango raised him from the dead or some shit. If all that's true, I'm glad the called the audible. The Kane premise was goofy enough, trying to sell Undertaker as a zombie controlled by Papa Shango in 1997 is some real Dungeon of Doom shit.
How could Bruce see Daniels do the Fallen Angel gimmick in 1998/1999?? Didnt Russo and Daniels come up with the angle in like 05/06??
Edge comes back for the Royal Rumble, dressed in his Viking gear from the show Vikings. Wouldn't put it past WWE for them to tell him to do that.
apart from edge is an already estblished wrestler so they would not
I was today years old when I finally got the joke of Val Venis' name
I still love watching episodes from the attitude era. Its silly and campy but if u like silly and campy as i do, its not a negative. lol
How many times can this channel make the same video over and over?
falvalisious with all these channels dying they have keep the doors open. They give us great free content so just watch.
@@greatstate58 "Just watching" is becoming a struggle after hearing the same info over and over again. Once something becomes repetitive, it becomes unappealing.
You clearly haven't seen this channel before recently. I've watched the same video with different people narrating idefk how many times but I keep doing it and they keep cranking out cuz we both know us wrasslin fans are idiots
Tonto 😂🤣😂
How would faking being deaf even work in a pro wrestling match. Noise are happening all the time: the crowds, the pyro, other wrestlers, referees, etc. How could any superstar maintain the guise of being unable to hear anything for more than one or two matches?
I have just recalled so much crap from the Attitude Era that I have forgotten who I am and where I am!😋😝
lord Tensai was trained by Killer Kowalski, and Kowalski was trained by the great Lou Thesz
And i was just bored by Dhaat Dhood
I would've take George "The Animal" Steele Jr before the Lord Tenzai shit LOL
The Lock? I don't get it. Hold me. 😌
You're not alone. Is there anyone out there in the ether who can explain this one?
It was simply a play on "the Rock".
That Sable-Undertaker angle sounded cool. Damn shame!
Spineshank....that's a name I haven't heard in a long time.
I thought the Higher Power was a non physical thing, an excuse to do the things they did, not an actual boss someone could attack
Papa Shango, the Higher Power. I mean, he’s a pretty big guy. But Godfather was going strong at the time, so guess they weren’t going to stop that train.
Hower Power?! :D
Lol “hower power”
Nice. 👍
A Spineshank reference? Woah.
i would have loved to have seen a darker more edgyer version of Papa Shango durning the AE 1st fuding with Taker b4 joining him.
There's not nearly enough Spineshank references in attitude era videos.
Is Spineshank the new Repo Man?
The "higher power" was originally going to be Christopher Daniels but when Vince first seen him he thought he was to small so he put the squash on it
That's what Simon said. Thanks for reiterating it tho 😰
More of these
Sinister Minister as the higher power. Back story Vince sold his soul to beat steroids trial and IRS the devil wants what he is ode
Why is everyone so negative on Papa Shango? Alright, the voodoo medicine man gimmick probably wouldn't fly today, but he ROCKED it back in the 90s.
Lol I love Spineshank!!!
Vince Russo thinking he knows who does and doesn't have the talent to be a top guy. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Edge is the single most decorated WWE Superstar in history and is in the HOF. I think he did alright. Oh, and it wasn't WWE who were all high on Sable. It was only Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn. Everyone else was much higher on Sunny than Sable.
Higher Power? Repo Man!
