What Does Tesla Do With Old Batteries?

  • Cars as we know them have been around since the early 1900s, but for over a century we have been burning fossil fuels at an alarming, almost careless, rate. Only in the past decade have we seen the electric vehicle market really taking off.
However, all EVs draw power from large battery packs placed deep beneath the car, hundreds of times the size of your latest smartphone’s battery. Have you ever wondered what happens to them once the car reaches retirement age?
A ban on petrol and diesel cars is fast approaching for many of us, meaning electric cars are becoming a much more common sight on our roads.
What happens to tesla batteries once they go bad?

There is a company with a environmentally friendly process to recycle Lithium Ion batteries. The process recovers close to all of the valuable cathode material ready to go right back in a battery manufacturers front door. The large battery manufacture's are well aware of this company.
Tesla has likely know of the company for several years but as it is with all large companies decisions are made at a snails pace. I'm thinking Tesla is and will continue to be slow to properly recycle its batteries. Tesla has never been a company about the environment, as usual it's all about the money.
I believe the company's process will soon come to the market place but as to which company will pull the trigger first, that is the billion dollar question.

I am sure he is decent at coding but he is definitely not the one behind most of teslas and his other companies' ideas. Search up JB Straubel patents, that guy and most likely some other people probably came up with most of the teslas slightly more innovative designs(judging by his patents). Elon musk is more of a mascot, his awkward personality appeals to most losers and makes people who don't pity him, great marketing tactic. Car companies are not involved in the recycling of the vehicles they manufacture. Never have been. The EPA can require that manufacturers make products out of materials that are recyclable, and Tesla is doing that. Battery recycling is already happening, although Tesla's batteries are lasting a lot longer than anyone predicted. There are many Teslas on the road today with more than 250K miles on them and still using the original battery.

Well done! It is worth noting that one of the pioneers in lithium-ion battery recycling is J.B. Straubel, the former Chief Technical Officer at Tesla and Elon Musk's original business partner. Straubel founded Redwood Materials, a Nevada-based company specializing in the recycling of lithium-ion batteries. All of the elements found in these batteries can be reused in the manufacture of new batteries, and the cost of recovering those elements is substantially lower than mining new elements from the ground. This savings provides a financial incentive for EV manufacturers to use recycled materials in the manufacture of new batteries.

It’s early days really. Early Tesla roadsters should have a 4680 pack designed and made for them. That would be a good way to swap out their early batteries and provide material to recycle. Same with packs on S and X. 4680 replacement for their original units. Once they have been swapped out then all earlier cells would be recycled into 4680 and all cars would run standard cells. 2170 packs should all go to home storage units until the earlier ones are finished then they can create a process to recycle 2170 units until they were used up.
By standardising on cell type as soon as possible, the recycling process can be made very efficient.

In the EU there exists a producer responsibility to make sure their products are recycled.
This is the producer or importers responsibility and concerns Chemicals, Plastics, cardboard, paper AND BATTERIES.
    It works like this...
There are companies that work with recycling, in the case of batteries the importer/producer declare amount and type of batteries sold each month and pay an amount/Kg and type then the recycling association takes care of the rest (collection and recycling) so it is already going on.
In the case of EV batteries they are mostly being stored at the moment and will be so for 2-3 years while building up recycling capacity for this kind of batteries.
There is the possibility for giving EV batteries a "second life" as storage for another 10+ years before recycling but the volume of batteries has to go up quite a bit before this industry get going.

When my Model X can only hold a 50% charge, I will move the battery into the house as backup powerwall at 50 kWh. I have a powerwall but only 14 kwh. So the old car battery could be used another 10 years then recycled

Very good instinct l also do it with my old batteries of my ebikes l can used them all night free of 12v lights in single charge for a month for another 2years before the old batteries totally busted and can also runs my tv and electric fans for 4hrs using an inverter during brownouts how helpful they are just make full the used of it in an ecofriendly way.

Shouldn't even be making anything like batteries without a plan to recycle them in place. Then a backup plan for that.

Yes. When my S batteries die around 2031 that owner can recycle and trade for a new recycled battery pack!
NOTE: Tesla recycled batteries are now available as replacement golf cart batteries. Thanks for info.

Seems incomplete to not juxtapose the $650 with the cost of newly mined materials for the same size battery.
The first google result says $22/kWh for raw materials.
    85kWh x $22/kWh = $1870

Currnt price of buying an EV is far too much for most people even with government rebates so the issue of recycling their batteries is mute to most folks.

Bruh NOBODY sends li-ion batteries and the like to landfills. There's a huge used market for batteries. I'll actually volunteer as a "landfill" for whoever wants to throw these away and I'll repurpose them all if that's the case, which it's not because, again, used batteries do hold quite some value and get sold instead of thrown away

5:55 How is that expensive? 650 dollars per 85kwh? That's about 7 dollars per kwh, to recycle. Currently companies sell batteries at around 100 dollars per kwh. This is a huge difference compared to 7 dollars.
