I started boarding in 95 with my Dad and my older brother. My Dad saw some kids hiking the mtn and riding down and hitting a Jump and the next weekend was like hey let’s try this snowboard thing. I was hooked and even though my Wrestling coach warned us not too, cause he was afraid of me breaking a arm. I went most Sundays during my high school years. I became really good friends with other fellow boarders and started riding weekly through most of my 20s. Now I am 41 and I am the only one of that group of friends that still boards and skates. Due to my dad who was already in his late 40s when he started boarding in 95 taught me if you want to be able to do things when you are older you need to take care of yourself. You need to lift you need to stretch and you need to just stay active. My dad RIP boarded all the way in to his 60s. So anyone reading this working out lifting does not make you a jock it allows you too keep doing the things you like doing longer and to stay rad.

I feel the same way. I'm 37 and plan to ride into my 70's. My dad was still skiing with me through the toughest terrain until he passed away at 70. We would have had many good years left riding together if his heart hadnt given out. Stretch, stay in shape, and keep doing the activities you want to enjoy in your later years. The worst thing you can do is stop and become out of shape

As a skier and skateboarder I can’t speak too much on my own connection to the ‘punk-rock’ snowboarding culture of decades past. However, it’s hard to overlook the impact that the rising cost of lift tickets has had on the culture surrounding the mountains. Couple that with the growth of freestyle skiing in the past 10-20 years and you realize that the terrain park is no longer the exclusive domain of snowboarders. Either way, we all share a love for the mountains, show respect to others and good vibes will follow.

Over 50 and disabled. Snowboarding is the only thing I do where most days I don’t feel disabled, and I can be better than I was before I got hurt. I took some training to learn to hit large jumps and now it’s my favorite thing. For me it’s about leaving the corporate world behind, firing up a punk rock playlist, and dropping in. For everyone else, do what you want. If I’m going to throw my fingers to the sky in rebellion, I’m sure as hell not going tell someone else, “How they should do it.”

I always knew snowboarding had this sort of grunge vibe to it just like skateboarding but i just cant get behind people that gatekeep the shit out of these, especially in skateboarding. People need to realize that these sports are not new anymore. With winter sports being so much popular it adds to more newcomers. I definitely regret not "training" more when I was in my youth so that I could have become a more capable rider, both physically and mentally. It would have helped me relax and be excited to progress instead of stressing about trying bigger tricks and stuff, which started to ruin the fun of it so I kind of gave up. Now at 36 I feel like I'm playing catch up and the physical training is an absolute must at my age if I want to go for tricks without hurting myself. It definitely doesn't help that I haven't been able to ride consistently in the last 5-10 years. I have no problem with snowboarding being less of a grungy counter-culture thing and being regarded as more of a sport. Snowboarding has so much fun to offer and having enough physical strength and a good riding technique really helps you get the most out of your time doing it.

On ski's I'm out of my comfort zone and that makes it funny again without the need to push myself to hard. Now I have more options to have fun. My wife her way of fun is slow and elegant. My way of fun is the contrary. To each his own. Gatekeepers gonna gatekeep. The same in skateboarding. Funny thing is that my skateboard sees a skatepark from time to time but the gatekeepers from back in the day just stoped and are keeping gates in other parts of life. Live your life, and live and let live. Peace!

If you need to push yourself to hard on snowbard means you have wrong technique. So you do not use the energy from gravity and centrifugal forces, but use the muscles. This is mistake. You need to do unloading and horizontal work on the snowboard using the turning power. Take a good instructor for a couple of days. Ask to learn carving and skidded turns again, watch RyanKnapton channel. Most likely you are crouching hard and sweeping with your back foot to turn. A lot of people quit snowboarding because they didn't learn how to do it right and the muscles get tired quickly due to mistakes.

Very good philosophy. Great thoughts and humbling. I started at 18 and still riding at 51. Did it because it looked amazing and it WAS rebellious. It was also the alternative to surfing for us in the mountainous regions. In the early days when places started to let snowboarders up the lifts, the hate for us was real, I got spit on and yelled at, threatened…but more skiers were curious than angry and it felt cool to be a representative.
Like surfing, there’s two very different camps; soul surfer and competitor. There’s room for both rebel and jock in snowboarding, too. The activity became too big for a single, close tribe and human nature ends up in competition so it was inevitable.
I use snowboarding to get in touch with my confidence and as a way to meditate, to truly be in the moment. There’s a stoke factor and the inclination to progress. So many positives that it’s hard to deny anyone, no matter why they want to shred, the lifetime adventure that is snowboarding.

Second, as an athlete (Mma) and a snowboarder since 1999/2000, training is absolutely a part of snowboarding for me. Definitely off mountain to stay capable on the mountain (flexible, strong, good endurance) . But on the mountain too, maybe not so much for me as an in person coach for me, cool if that’s your thing though, but definitely in the way of friends who push you to expand your riding and will answer questions like “hey, how the hell did you land that?” You just have to be humble enough to ask and get outside of your comfort zone. Progressing together is what the sport is all about.

I used to be a pretty decent skier. Got MS. Stopped skiing. Forced myself to learn snowboarding. Became a splitboarder and it let's me experience mountains again, but in a new way.
This then turns into training motivation for the rest of the year. Since staying functional and fit should make snowboarding easier (much like preseason training made skiing more enjoyable in the past).
How-to-snowboard-videos started showing up on my youtube feed but they did not resonate with me until this one!
Much like you the counter culture is what drew me to my past life. I viewed (view?) ski/snowboard school with a bit of resentment. But all my friends are skiers and training in snowboarding could lead to the riding more enjoyable. It could also make the crap days on snow feel more inspiring.

Idk I was just at Keystone and had some awesome conversations with some fellow shredders on the gondola. The stoke is still alive. However, I will say there are less and less mountains these days where you feel okay to let loose. At Breckenridge there were Jerry's everywhere and I was constantly looking around me instead of looking into my riding.

Practicing off season and at the bottom of the mountain before hand is so overlooked. If you want to do a trick, first imagine yourself landing it,then practice the motion off your board. Then practice it strapped in. Whether it's at the bottom of the mountain or whether it's on grass. That motion and muscle memory goes a very long way. I have such good board control compared to my friends because I believe in working off the mountain. Snowboarding is all legs, agility, creativity and balance. You should be doing squats and have a strong core. Even do carving will you're just standing there strapped in,really focus on balance and being solid in the legs.

The only difference between “back in the day” and now is that just riding a plank instead of two doesn’t make you special. What you do with it can make you special. Just like with skiing, where you can be super boring and basic (yet still enjoy it, which is what counts), or you can be a super stylish newschooler..

We need to do better to our fellow shredders on the mountain. Encouraging words can be the little push that someone needs to land that trick that they were practicing for the past week. I’ve seen this first hand in encouraging my son to play outside of his comfort zone. Be kind to one another out there. Stop calling people out from the lift because they ate sh1t. One day you might just piss off the wrong person while they wait for you to enter the park. Just saying. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤘🏼

I think it's like any other skater/boarder/punkrock scene it matured into what it is now and with anything else, there is the individuals that feel the need to measure their skills against others. For these boarders there is competitions such as Olympics! And then there is the ones that don't want to measure and want to be free, NO RULES. I just want to rip with my son, he does park and I myself (44) ride along and film him and be a proud dad and expose him to what drew me to this, and he is loving it. I have had experiences on the slopes good and bad with Snowboarders from all walks of life. I teach my son to be cool and accepting of everyone in life, not just on the slopes but everywhere in life! Thanks for this great conversation topic Ed!!! Keep on Shredding!!

Bro maybe it's just a out west thing but us out here in the Midwest where 200' is a hill and 400' is a mountain its still pretty much the same yeah its gotten commercial and yeah there's daytrippers and weekend warriors but I'm a newly married new father and full time construction worker so my time on the hill is like my sacred escape from the mundanity of life. I like to cruise the corduroy but what really gets me lit is chasing a powder day and smashing little hidden sidehits and trying to push my luck with the ropes and passthrus. I rode a beginner park at this hill called Little Switzerland and these kids riding the park in there are absolutely ripping it dude. I felt like a old dude in there and I'm only 27 but nothing has me more stoked than stoking these kids up and helping out if someone is hurt and needs someone responsible to take charge. The true spirit of snowboarding will always be with Tom sims and jake Burton arguing about who invented it, and the kids who could just barely afford their gear hiking uphill to ride one run stoked out of their minds. Guys like me that pile 4 of them into a beat up chevy to chase a snowstorm up a mountain pass in hopes of some fresh pow, sleeping in cars, living out of board bags, smoking weed on the chairs, spending their last hundred bucks to ride big hills. It's not the people who belong on the hill in their vale-esque courchevel status Columbia jackets and brand new gear every year. It's the guys who ride 10 year old thrift store rigs and stay stoked, the people who never would belong on a ski slope, but who broke in because of the hard work put in by those before us.

52 and skated hard as a kid and snowboarded for over 20 years to this day. My two teenage kids are skiers. this dad joined them last year. I am moving away from the darkside after all these years. I will still continue to splitboard, but my resort days will move into skiing. Its not as jarring as snowboarding, and who doesnt love pizza and french fries. I will keep my boards and still break one out from time to time.

It can all be a bit much but he enjoys the competition. He also enjoys freeriding and finding dope tree runs, side hits, and job lines in the park. That's what we'll do this weekend. Both are valuable.

Gosh I needed to hear this! I was finally able to afford my first snowboard setup after a lifetime of wishing and envying (Im 28 lolol). Only to further be discouraged about the insane price of jackets and pants, and them virtually not existing for a 6'2 250 pound rider. But Im gonna take the approach I did with skating in my childhood, teens, and early adulthood; fuck it, wear what I want, feel comfortable in, so long as I look rad and have fun. My goal is to incorporate what I know from vert surfskate and hope that it translates into something cool going down a mountain slope

Also, stores often have deals towards the end of the season. I got my pants and coat from the shop in my town in the clearance section and have had them for years. Hoping I can have them for another year or two. Got some grease stain on my pants this year but they still work!
My daily driver I have was probably $450 at the time, but I’ve had it since 2013, so it can pay off if you save for it. I don’t really ride park, but I push myself and ride when I can, and my board is still in great condition. Again, you can find things on sale end of season, but selection might just be limited.
You could also try ski swaps too. When starting out, I got equipment there. I can’t stress enough having the right equipment though (correct size boots, bindings, etc). I just bought what was available and cheap when starting out. I feel I didn’t progress enough because my boots didn’t fit right and my board wasn’t right for me. Nothing wrong with discounted or used, just make sure it works for you! I hope you figure it out and have fun!
