I've been a dog rescuer for 24 years. You are absolutely right. You could have called animal control but the end result would have been the same. Liability is too high for that dog to have been re-homed.
Like my Daddy used to say, "After the broom stick, comes the boom stick".
I wouldn’t care what others think…protecting your family is TOP priority.. you made the right call

You did the right thing. As a livestock owner, I've had my hens destroyed by the neighbors dog. I've had 3 sheep taken in one night by a bear. Living in the Rocky Mountains isn't for the faint of heart. Thank you for helping your family. There are also laws regarding dogs that roam.
If you hadn't dispatched the wild dog, then you would have been negligent in taking care of your wife, kids and animals. Great job Granger! You did the right thing!
No need to apologize, so many people who live on acreage and have young children, animals and pets have to defend their family from anything or anyone that will harm them.
