Ooh for braids...Draw a zig zag that starts big and gradually gets smaller and connect them with a kind of half heart shape. (If that makes sense) and from there you can kinda see how to make it look more like a braid. Idk if this helped but uh yeeee

Im only good at drawing eyes, coloring with colored pencils, uh drawing hair and poses but I’m horrible at anatomy
a tip that an artist once taught me is when your blending blacks and whites dont use any harsher blacks or greys. For white: blend with a light blue for a more realistic white shading and for black: blend with a dark blue where your shading and i use it quite a bit and i think its better than trying to shade with greys or blacks!

Draw one eye first (any side you like) but dont finish it make sure they line up first and also make sure not press hard on the drawing if you create a mistake you will not erase it easily the finish the eye then finally you can add pressure to add shade and texture to it that really works for me.

I guess one tip I would give is if it isn’t something you’re very familiar, or just for everything I general, have a reference out. Whether it be on Pinterest or Google, it all really helps.

I struggle with alot of cartoony artwork. I am trying them but they irritate me. I want to improve my painting realism as well with my pin up art. So many people seem to just have a hang of it. I understand the feeling of perfectionism. It can make enjoying a piece difficult.
I got the hang of realism (kinda) before I got my cartoony style. It took a long time to find my cartoony style ;-;

@@simrahq4712 manily tge eyes and jawlines are generally softer, noses have a smoother slope if that makes sense and if it's an illustration it may help to add blush on the nose cheeks and eyelid, but not too much. Hope this helps but like i am not a professional lmao

Hi Rae! I'm not finished with the video but I already love it. A tip I could suggest if you're okay with it is to not avoid realism completely in illustration. I draw both constantly. The differences I find is that illustration is kinda that sketch before you start turning the lines into tones. I still do change the proportions, but having realistic looking illustration is still an illustrated picture. Just swapping out most of the tones with lines is a start. Good luck and have fun Rae! 💙

Things to work on when it comes to realism:
• Never outline the lips, it’s all about shading. Real life don’t have lines, only shadow.
• when drawing the neck, make sure to go out of your comfort zone to make the neck thicker. In this drawing you made her neck way to thin which confuses realism vs appealism.
• ears. The top of the ear (if you don’t know) matches up with the eye or eyebrow and the lobe of the ear matches up with the nose. And also ears have so much form than you think, if you look at a picture of a ear and keep drawing it over and over again you’ll see a pattern within everyone’s ears and learn a easier way to draw them.
• when drawing a “the perfect circle” you should lift up your wrist and use your elbow to draw a circle. It might help you make straighter lines and a “perfect circle”
She wasnt doing realism..
she was doing an illustration in a semi-realistic/cartoonish style, not realism. In this type of style, as she mentioned in the video, the face features and anatomy are exaggerated (small neck and body, big head with big cartoonish eyes, a different example is the so-called 'chibi' style)

The way I practice anatomy is that I do one or two studies, and immediately after draw something similar, without reference, while still applying whatever I learned from the study. If I get stuck I refer back to the drawing from the study I did earlier. Practicing this way has really improved my anatomy so I’d recommend it lol

Just because you’re creating something stylized or from imagination, references are useful and reasonable to use in anything from amateur to professional work. You can reference anatomy, proportions, placement, lighting, and so much more. That doesn’t stop you from changing it into something of your own! 💕

i physically cringed when you did the fine lining. Going back over your lines in a super sketchy way like you did is a big no no. Always do ONE LINE, NOT A MILLION GOING OVER EACH OTHER lmao. love the art, the neck is kinda eh but i can look past that, but gurl the finelining

Not-So-Pro-Tips:
1) Proportions in illustration are largely due to style. Anime tends to have quite exaggerated facial features, but the bodies tend to be proportioned pretty human-like, American style cartoons tend to be extremely exaggerated in every aspect, whereas Western comic book styles tend to lean on more realistic human proportions with much more precise (read: not soft or blended) shading and linework. And all of these categories can be combined and picked and chosen from to varying degrees until you find a combination that feels right for your style.
2) Illustration is more of a distillation of realism, so, for instance, say you're drawing lips. In a realistic style you would get the shape, then the shading, then the details of the lines in the lips, and there would be no harsh lines because real human lips don't have a harsh outline (unless you line them with dark lip liner I guess?). In an illustrative style, the shape is the MOST important part, not any of the rest. Does the shape convey lips? good, you've done your job.
3) Realism is about rendering something to be as true to life as possible, to make it really tangible like it exists in a 3D space. Illustration, however, is about conveying an idea of a thing, more than the thing itself. Can I look at it and know that it's a flower/diamond/puppy/motorcycle/etc? Then that's a successful illustration. Once you have the ability to convey an idea down pat, then you can work on getting the aesthetics to look how you want (want it to be pretty? I recommend soft, thin lines, more colour than lineart. Want it to be really industrial and robotic? Harsh lines with very little line weight, like a diagram. want it to be dramatic? super varied line weight, thick and thin lines, really emphasize the most important parts)
and finally
4) Illustration can be as much about what you don't draw as what you do, a blank space can mean more to the eye than you might expect. A common and clear example would be how most illustrations don't have a tear duct visible in the eye shape, the lines just end where the tear duct would be, which gives us the shape, and the impression, without having to overcomplicate a simplified illustration.

Yeah, Rae I think that your proportions are a little off , but that’s coming from an aspiring artist, but I do draw realism, and it’s not always a bad idea to incorporate more realism into your art. But I love your art , keep doing your good job!

With the big eyes, the also make the forehead larger when doing that so they dont look out of proportion

Just because she’s drawing stuff she is bad at doesn’t mean when she draws them she stops being a professional
i'm gonna cry. copics get ruined really easily if you use them directly over a pencil sketch.
i'd suggest either lightly erasing the sketch first, so it's barely visible, or outline first, with a brand of fineliners that's compatable with the markers

Your girl came out so cute! I especially love the profile view and dripping paint. I draw in a cartoony/anime-esque style with some realistic proportions and I always have issues with the head coming out too big; it just really bugs, so I understand the pain there.
