Split Second is the racing game time forgot. It deserved fanfare. Instead, it shut down it's developers by being born the wrong genre. Is it the most underrated racing in recent memory? Time to find out.

About the pc version, if you like the game try the disk version instead of the steam version. Dunno what it is, but some of my friends were also frustrated when I introduced them to this, but I never suffered a single bug in S/S and I believe that's cause I had the disk version instead.

Agreed - Marc Canham really hit it out of the park. He started down a different path on the music and then completely redid it to better match the energy of the game - and boy does all the effort show. My favorite part is the use of dynamic layers on Elite races.
He talked about it in an interview with Chris Greening on Square Music Online.
“impressive electro-orchestral soundscapes. How did you ensure the score was still compelling and catchy, while maintaining an explosive feel throughout? Did you intend the score for stand-alone listening or was it primarily composed with the context in mind?
Marc Canham: I found this score very tough, and collaborated with Rich a lot more with regards to the programming elements on Split/Second. I started out down one avenue at the beginning that we all creatively liked, but it soon became apparent the score needed to be far more 'in your face' than what I was creating. The orchestration had to be simplified a lot to allow for the amount of programmed elements to take the lead and deliver the wallop that SS needed. So what was once a very orchestrally lyrical score become an onslaught of drum machines, meaty guitars, and some basic lead lines with the orchestra.
At the end of the day, I totally think that was the best approach and was the right call from the developer for the type of game SS is, but it was a challenge. It was purely made to work with car engines and create lots of adrenaline, but if it works standalone then great. Not all soundtracks do stand up on their own of course!”

Huh... Thanks for giving this game some love!, My dad worked on this at former Black Rock games studios in Brighton and he was responsible for a lot of the cinematic camera work in scenes/gameplay, and the iconic big destruction animations featured in the more memorable races. For example that cargo plane crash he had a hand in creating!. As a kid he would take me to the studio like a lot of the devs did back then, and I actually got to playtest this with their bug reporting team :), I spotted a lot of the bugs like the sinking truck that deployed the explosive barrels haha.
It was a great studio, and my dad loved it... It was sad to see it closed down resulting in a lot of turmoil for the families who worked there.
They actually modelled some toy cars using the game assets for the team to give to their kids when it was all finished, wish I still had mine lol. While the Studio was eventually closed down due to the dissolve of Disney interactive, I still vividly remember seeing concept art on the walls for the planned sequel which intended to take the experience into the 70s and 80s aesthetic. No doubt it would have been something special...

    This game deserved more
Edit: If its not okay to just say this here are my thought on split second although keep in mind that they are pretty similar to whitelights.
Racing games have been my favorite genre for years and nothing captured that love like split second did. It's a feast for the eyes as long as so don't look to close during crashes (or the power plant level in general) but it is made up for by how it all looks in motion especially when things are blowing up. I can't say that the music is special but it is memorable be that form its excellent fit with the game or from all of the times playing it I don't know.
This game made me indirectly want to loose the race because I utterly suck at the drifting but nevertheless always wanted to see what insane power plays were on each track. And as for the tracks while they are good they began to drag over the course of the season and that's not to say the explosions are any less good it's to say they become less impactful once you've been hit by the same exact obstacle swinging across the track multiple times.
While all the game modes are good and use the base mechanics to their advantage my favorite has to be denotator. When you boil it down this mode is a time trial which is something we have seen in nearly every racing game or its kind but what sets it apart is how it iterates on a familiar formula to create something special.
As for blur I have played it and while it is good its selling point becomes stale faster than split second despite it being applicable to many more situations.
Do I want a new split second? yes. But that doesn't have to be another racing game with power plays because what split second also is is innovation in a genre that will truly need something new in this age to bring it back to the position it once held. (note: I would probably still buy another game exactly like it and here's hoping that some indie team can bring some new ideas to an old formula because if it doesn't print money then Disney won't do it).

I would argue the rubberbanding was what pulled it together. The game would be dull if the AI didn't try to sabotage you on the way, and at the same time crashing sends you back a huge distance, especially in Elite races. One big mistake can send you from 1st place to a 7 second deficit to first place. So AI needs to be quick enough to recover from crashes to be a tangible threat, but also can't just leave you behind when they do succeed in getting you to make a fatal mistake.

My dad worked at Blackrock before it got yeeted by Disney. Was a big bummer, with most of the team wanting to make a sequel

I swear if I ever had an opportunity to make a racing game, it’d be a spiritual successor to this

People will never understand how fucking awesome it to have a plane and bridges crashing down into a huge explosion while you try not only to not get caught up by it, but also continue in the race. This game is easily a top 5 of all time for me, and my favorite racing game

A sad thing about this game is that it runs at 30 fps even on PC, and as far as I know the only 60 fps mods available create bugs with shortcuts and power plays.

This patch MAY be better. Can't really tell - I didn't test it myself but you can find in the description that they fixed the physics and power-up bugs: community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/1232-splitsecond-60-fps-patch/

Im still preparing myself to watch the Death stranding video, just gotta find the right time.

me and my older brother used to play split second and blur all the time in split screen. i still remember the day i brought the split second disc home. he was so mad that i didnt get need for speed hot pursuit or some known racing game. little did he know this would help us bond like nothing other. blur was amazing as well. i brought it after split second so he trusted me with this one. and later in the years, i had lost the split second disc so we couldn't play that so we played the heck out of blur. nothing brought me closer to my brother than these two games and im forever thankful for it.

Love this game. You should check out and make a video on Full Auto: Battlelines 2. The gameplay was super janky but the idea was a fun mix of burnout, spy hunter and demolition type car games. The weapon customization on the cars was the best part, it had some really badass stuff

I am so happy that you made a video about this game. You always make me surprised with the right game picks for your materials and every single time I'm loving it. This game was an absolute blast to play when I was 10 years old and it still is. Deserved so so much more than unforgivable Disney fate. I recall coming back to it each few years because of how good it was as it's still one of my favorite racing games. Brings the feels.
