Awesome! My first car in 2006 was a 1987 Camry. Basically this exact car.
Im older, and have owned many newer cars and trucks now, but i am actually considering buying another one of these.
Its cool to see a younger person with mechanical knowledge and appreciation. Keep it up.

A true classic. Can’t go wrong with an older Toyota.

Being a new mechanic, I like old cars and when I own a car, I just want a car that'll take me to places, be reliable, look classy, cheap to own, and comfortable. An old Camry fits the bill real well. All I'd do would be modernize the interior with a new radio that doesn't stand out and new speakers. I just want an easy to own car that's comfortable. Idc about speed, I'd rather cruise with a comfortable car.

I’m a new mechanic too and I adore older toyotas, my only advice for buying an old car is don’t overlook the cosmetic condition!!!!! Especially paint!!!! Because if you really love your car, having a peeling clearcoat, rust spots/bubbling paint could really get to you after a while. And cosmetic repair takes a lot of time and dedication to learn…and for paint, indoor garage, respirator, paint booth, etc etc to get a factory like finish. And of course, if you get paint done at a shop, it’s more often than not more than the value of the car. Good luck out there

I have a '91 DX. The jetson-era seatbelts are the bomb and the most entertaining for pre-teens. The fishbowl visibility is the best driver feature.

Bought a nearly new '87 DX in '88. If I was selling it, beater, if I was attempting to buy it back a classic,
They succumbed to rust issues in my area, I had mine nearly 10 years. Needed a Rack, water pump & valve guides at the time. 138K will go down as my favorite car.

Love these cars. I had the same one in Corolla form (they look exactly the same) for $1,500 in 2008 when I had no money at 140K miles and some how it lasted 6 months before the tranny broke 3rd gear the moment I took it on the freeway. SUPER lightweight car though. If you engine swapped, it would be scary fast.
I just say do your best to replace what you can and you'll have a reliable beater for life that still looks good.
Also I agree on the styling. I like it better than my 94' Camry I sold, but even that one still looks really good compared to well any other that came after it.

Downtown Atlanta five points/underground is like skid row. Nobody wants to do business over there due to the homeless popping up. Once you drive past midtown/Buckhead, they're constantly building skyscrapers.
