"World Stratos Meeting" - Ex-F1 Driver Erik Comas

- At the hands of ex-Formula One driver Erik Comas, the legendary Lancia Stratos rally car competes again, more than 40 years after it's final WRC victory.
Erik's passion for the Stratos began when he was a child living in France, and saw the car competing at the Rally Monte Carlo. After a racing career that consisted of competing in F1 in the early 90s, the JGTC in Japan and even WRC, Erik's focus turned to the Rally Legend.
In 2011 Erik began competing in championships with a goal to not only keep the Stratos racing, but also winning. With an Italian championship title, Tour de Corse and Targa Florio to name a few, there's no doubt he's doing just that.
The Bertone-designed Lancia Stratos won the World Rally Championship in 1974, 1975 and 1976 and continued to dominate at the hands of privateers for a full decade after. Less that 500 were made and very few of risk original cars the way Erik does.
In 1986 to commemorate the 10 years of the final championship win, a World Stratos Meeting was held, with a gathering from examples of the cars across the world. No such event had taken place until Erik teamed up Zenith Watches to celebrate the 40 years of the victory by holding a one-time event in Biella, Italy this past Summer.
The World Stratos Meeting in Biella hosted 40 cars and saw the introduction of 40 limited-edition Zenith El Primero Watches. Erik also designed the event to be incorporated into the Rally Lana Storico, an event that host 200+ vintage cars and races on closed roads throughout the Italian mountainside.
This gave the participates the opportunity to drive the cars on closed rally stages, while Erik competed in the actual event.
With such a recognizable shape, that still looks current today, the Lancia Stratos is one of those rare examples of dreams becoming cemented in reality.

This car is a legend!!! The entire world will always respect and fear it as one of the greatest cars ever built!!! Lancia propably built the greatest amount of legends for one single brand (Stratos, Delta, Fulvia, 037, etc.)!

To be perfectly honest, I think Stratos is a nice car but I love it for its personality and for concept and for all that it stands for. It is one crazy thought that came to life and lived it (and it seems it still is) fully.

Erik, not to worry, I have been astound as a child with this car, even if I didn't know what it was and was born in 1996. I would see this car as cheap Chinese 1:64 cars as a child (one of them being the Turbo) and it wasn't until I was 10 when I knew exactly what it was when I got Toca Race Driver 3 for Christmas. Ever since then, it's been one of my favorites and I hope someday I get to view one in person, and even take it for a spin. The closest I've gone in driving a Lancia was when I was 4-5 years old in Sega Rally 1995. My mom always made me choose the Celica since she thought the Integrale was ugly (I liked the Integrale way better). Go forward 16 years and it's my preferred rally car when playing GT4, and I even have one of my own, in 1/10 scale. For now, I'll just have to dream on and keep thrilling myself with CZcams, my Playstation and my Tamiya TT02.

Only two cars stopped dead in my track in haw on first sight : The Gulf livery original Ford Gt 40, and this awesome, so fast just standing still Lancia Stratos in Alitalia livery. I'm an old geeser now but I still have goose bumps just looking at it ! Some attracted me along the years, Porsche 917 LM and 904, McLaren P1... but none comes pure emotionally to my mind like the Stratos. None. Oh poor Lancia, such a sad karma. Come on, Italia, give us more Bella Machinas again ! Pleeeeease !

6:05 Manufacturers who have focused on competition and not commerce have usually done well in commerce also. I can think of a certain Japanese watch brand that succeeded in this way. Lancia also with respect to vehicles, at least for another 20 years after the Stratos. Because customers become devoted to the visionary purpose of a particular brand, which is not just about making money. Especially if competition leads to technology improvements that filter down through the product range available for sale.
