My elementary school teacher always had a John Denver month in the 70’s and she taught me how to play it on guitar. I have loved John Denver since he first came on the radio. This song is particularly special to my family , being from West - by - God Virginia. I distinctly remember hollering for my daddy to come listen to this new song and my big bear WWII combat veteran daddy stood in my bedroom's doorway crying. Two months later we had piled in the family car in South Florida and headed home to West Virginia for one of our visits to those beloved hills. He forever after would say " Sing it ,Johnny ! " when he would hear it , like when West Virginia University would play it after every touchdown and half a stadium would sing it as loud as they could. I hope that my daddy and sister and John are singing it together in Heaven !
Texas here. It really is one of those kind of songs. I won't even listen to it if I'm alone, but the moment I hear 1 other person singing along I can't stop the words from coming out.
I first heard his music as a teenager in early 70s. Nobody ever understood. And I never apologized. What a beautiful song writer, story teller and singer. His music will live on forever
What do you mean? It was released in 1971 and was one of the most popular songs that year. It was played on rock stations, country stations. Everywhere. Lots of folk rock was very popular during those years.
Agreed. But I know what she means. Many were listening to rock, Zappa was one of my boyfriend's favorites to listen to. When I brought my album over, he was polite. And actually ended up having fun listening with me. That was the magic of John Denver❤

Brought a tear to this ol boy's eyes. I played 2 years on a German American hockey team while I was stationed over there. The rink we played at in Bitburg had a bar/restaurant and we'd sit in there and drink after every practice and game. The juke box had this on it and when the mood was just right this song would pop off and all the players sang along and most everyone else in the place would join in too. my grandfather passed away before i was born. he lived in west virginia and played for their college football team. i was born after he passed and discovered this song from a church camp when i was 5. i went home and told my mom to play it, and she started tearing up. turns out it was his favorite song, and they even played it at his funeral.
Youd be suprised the power of great american country music worldwide. I grew up in a very remote area of Papua New Guinea and all the non english speaking adults would belt this out when having a party. John Denver & Charlie Pride....the song also had special meaning when played on the back of pickup trucks heading home through moutainous ranges where you could see the valleys and rainy mountainside, afternoon sunsets etc in the distance..knowing that every turn brought us close to home.RIP John Denver
We played this song at my 50th here in England and my cousin played it live in a bar in Scotland. This happened both times. Everybody in the room sang along!!!!! Legend....
I heard in an English pub in '75 while stationed there....made me so homesick 💖
Cheers!
Happy 50th
I'm amazed, and extremely thrilled, to see and hear another new generation loving John Denver's songs. What's even more amazing is that they, the children, knew the words and the melody. ❤

My elementary school teacher always had a John Denver month in the 70’s and she taught me how to play it on guitar. Good old Mrs. Nix was good at her job, always breaking out old fashioned musical instruments she’d learned to play.
I have no doubt that they are! God bless WV!

The second line of the song, “Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River” identifies two clear geographic features that are more relevant to western Virginia than West Virginia.
