      @@mikecorning8999 Have to agree. Thing is though, living in Texas, I see way too many large parcels of property being sold by family members who inherited the land their generations before worked hard because either they want the cash or don't have the love for the work. Nothing wrong with not wanting to be part of the family business, but I believe if your kids want nothing to do with the business, they shouldn't inherit the land. They end up selling it and erasing all the hard work of previous generations. Either sell it when you (farmers and ranchers in general) retire to a family/company who can afford the land or sell it to a developer yourself and retire to the Bahamas. But don't give it to a bunch of ungrateful inheritants who just want to profit off the sale of the land! Damn shame to see all these family farms being sold to make money off companies who jsut wanna build a bunch of houses.

We began converting it to an organic farm in the 80's and it continues to be now. We put it in the Land Preservation program in Md last year so now it will remain an organic farm and/or agricultural use for the rest of our lives and beyond. No housing development on our farm!!!

It's a great bypass food, tough to store though. We didn't have any customers as far east as you guys, Somerset was as far as we would go. But, I will say this, of all the different types of people I have met over the years, the dairy farmers were the hardest working, most polite and professional of all I have met. The process of preventing horns was really interesting! In Norway we use a special heat gun to stop the growth, we give the calves a drug so it can't feel anything and then apply enough heat to stop it. Seems like a way faster and easier way of doing it.

I don’t see how that ultimately good for the animals when they end up dead from your doing (ie. You being the reason why they are there). If it truly came out of a place of compassion for these animals you wouldn’t be in an industry that kills them. Seems obvious.

    Should make a video just on the dehorning paste. Never heard of it and no idea how it works! Does it like erode the horn tissue so it can’t grow? Cauterize the ends so they can’t continue to grow?

    • @8tomtoms8
      @8tomtoms8 Před 5 lety +2

      Yes it does. It's a caustic paste that basically stops blood flow to the nerve. It is by far the least painful and simplest way to remove horns, no bleeding, no infections.

    An easy way to move young calves like those is to reverse them and not carry them like you were. Just turn them and back them and guide them into their calf pen. It is easier on the calf and your back. Happy new year!
