- In 1988, MTV banned Neil Young's music video to "This Note's for You" from their channel. This video will be going over the history of the video, its ban and subsequent controversy and the legacy it left behind.

The difference between Weird Al and Neil is one of parody vs. satire. It's kind of like comparing Conan O'Brien to Jon Stewart, both hilarious for different reasons. The former examples go for silliness and absurdity, while the latter ones are scathing in their attacks.

Context: before this happened, nobody under 30 cared about Neil Young...the flap over “This Note’s For You” gave Young a surge of indie cred that persists to this day.

And then Neil went ahead and Sold Out his catalog and "Old Man" is now playing in a Budweiser commercial. What a hypocrite!
This video is so great. That part where Miller rips off Bette Midler and especially the Fat Boys is so messed up.
This is so interesting. Thank you Music Video Time for sharing. I LOVE Neil Young for his music, and most of all for his candid transparency. He doesn't tip toe for anyone and I love that he is genuine! I also love documentary type posts like this a lot! I learn so much! I really enjoy learning new things, especially in the music industry, because I have a greater appreciation for the music if I understand the song. Thank you again!
The music industry is a business. If your product isn't profitable, you won't stay in business. This industry (entertainment, news, media in general) is known for creating controversies in order to stimulate sales. At one time, I was a big Neil Young fan. In the 80s, nobody had cassettes of The Shocking Pinks, Trans, Freedom, American Dream, Landing On Water, Decades, etc. The Blue Notes lawsuit and the MTV controversy brought Neil Young's name front and center. He made new fans, found a new audience. People are still talking about him and his music in 2022. There's no such thing as bad publicity when you're in that industry.

Btw, just three years later Genesis make I Can't Dance, a video that is a full parody of some jean's television commercials and MTV have no problem with that. They learn I guess.
Somewhere in the first part of the video you asked if people didn't realize the amount of damage the fire did to Michael Jackson. I can only speak for myself from my own memory but I don't think so. Yes, it was shocking when the news broke but quickly became, yeah, he'll be OK. Thus, if he'll be OK, a joke about it is OK. Of course, in retrospect, it wasn't. On the impersonation front and speaking of David Lee Roth, one to remember is 1985's Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody that also spoofed Jackson and many others from Willie Nelson to Boy George, even electrocuting Billy Idol. As for the song itself, I'm a big Neil fan so we can agree to disagree on how good it is but, as I recall, it was played a LOT right off the bat on rock radio where I lived and I'm not sure the ban had much to do with it. I always thought it set up Neil's "comeback" when, as you mentioned, Freedom was a gangbuster. Great stuff to learn about and remember. Thanks!

Roger Waters told Facebook to stick it for the use of Another Brick in the Wall Part 2. Also David Gilmour won’t allow his songs to be used in commercials. Rick Wright allowed the use of The Great Gig in the Sky for use in a Neurofen (UK equal if Advil) ad and also OK’d Dole’s use for a banana ad.
Waters, Gilmour, Henley and the Frey estate won’t allow Pink Floyd (except for Rick Wright) or Eagles songs in commercials.
I don't think that Neil was making fun or a joke out of Michael's predicament. It's was more used as commentary regarding selling yourself to the devil and getting burned because of it. If Michael didn't agree to the commercial, he wouldn't have been set on fire.
Yeah, but Michael didn't necessarily "agree" to do the commercial either. Michael was contractually obligated to appear in the commercials so that Pepsi would sponsor a forthcoming Jackson 5 tour (with this sponsorship deal being signed by tour promoters without Michael's knowledge or consent).
I recommend reading "Weird Scenes Inside The Canyon: Laurel Canyon, Covert Ops & The Dark Heart Of The Hippie Dream" by David McGowan for better insight into Neil's "authenticity".
