    The other reason for it being a monument is the age of the race. That is why Amstel Gold wasn't added to the list of monuments despite requests from organisers. The first Amstel Gold Race was held in 1966. All the monuments are well over 100 years old (LBL the oldest -1892-). That is the main reason why Amstel Gold and Strade Bianche aren't added.

    Hi Chris. I enjoyed your race analysis. That was an exciting LBL. I think the Tour of the Alps helped Bardet get second place at LBL. It makes sense to me that Team DSM would have Bardet use the Tour of the Alps to get ready for LBL: they need a lot of points, LBL is worth a lot of points, and yesterday, they got Jakobsen to win. I noticed you said Lutsenko just got done winning The Tour of the Alps, but as you know it was actually Il Giro d'Abruzzo.

    2n and 3rd on the podium benefited massively drafting them cars

    • @Flakey101
      @Flakey101 Před 29 dny +2

      That kind of annoyed me in the race to, Piddcock went because he knew the rear group was not going to catch the peleton, but that was before the cars drafted them all the way to the back of it. They all should have been pulled out when the gap became under a minute. You even had a shot of one car shooting past other cars with about 20 riders glued to the back.

    Another Monument, another great review!
    Congratulations to Tadej and his team.
    This is the second race I've seen MDVP ride in a manner that I am not familiar with. He appears to prefer the Slow Burn than jumping around chasing the wind and burning bullets. No one, not the Eurosport announcers, nor myself, expected a 3rd place from him after La Redoute.
    He never looked flustered. Even at the crash site, he stood there waiting, as if keeping mentally calm was more important than arguing and hustling other riders out of the way to get back in the chase. Listening to Chris this morning though, ADC were chasing hard but it did not appear so, it looked like a steady diesel train.
    To have the energy to hold a 200m sprint after the length and tension of that race shows he might be unto something with this chess Grand Master style.

    Watching this race I've found a strategy for Pogacar to win Milan - San Remo. The only way Pogacar can do it is by attaching on Poggio and not by staying behind a teammate until the steepest part, which is too short to make a difference against MVDP. He needs to attach from the beginning of Poggio. MVDP can follow any wheel up Poggio but Pogacar's. 500m is a distance MVDP can hold Pogacar wheel. 1500m is a different story. If Pogacar attacks from the beginning by the time they get to the steepest part MVDP will be seriously in red. If Pogacar can get a 10-15 second gap at the top he can hold it down Poggio and very likely win.

    • @ChrisHornerCycling
      @ChrisHornerCycling  Před 29 dny +14

      It’s not steep enough like the climbs here. Video really sucks to show the real life differences between MSR and here at LBL. Plus you add in the fact that MVDP form is dropping and Pog is peaking for the Giro after some quality training. I wouldn’t bet on Pog going solo top to bottom but we may just see Pog have to try that one year if his teammates can’t get to the Poggio on the front. 🤔🦋👊

      @alessandrobardini6885 Před 29 dny +3

      He already did what you propose the year Mohoric won. Winning MSR for Pogi depends on the race conditions. Nibali could win in 2018 because Sagan didn't follow., whilst this year MVDP didn't let Pogi escape. In Lombardia and LBL he can win just because of the legs

    • @bbuuttercupp
      @bbuuttercupp Před 29 dny +1

      @@erichgerber251 I think he can win both, although yes, MSR will be tricky and will require a lot of luck. But he's shown that even in a sprint, he can beat most of the guys at the line. Paris-Roubaix is such a hard race that someone as good at recovering/staying fresh at the end of a race as Tadej will benefit from that immensely, and he's obviously a great bike handler and good on the cobbles as well. If he gains a few kgs and focuses on it one season, I have no doubt he can win it.

    Great vid Chris, as usual; you often seen to see things I never did watching the same race. I wish this channel exisisted when I was a young racer in my 20s. It feels like we're watching history being made, IMO Tadej has already eclipsed other riders who were young superstars (Lemond or Ullrich?). No male rider has even come close to Merckx's total accomplishments, but if Tadej has the staying power of your career, or M. Voss, he appears to have the broad skills to break many of Merckx's records.

I do not agree with those who say Pogacar is the next GOAT or the next Merckx, there's never been another Merckx and possibly never will be. Merckx crushed flat sprints, long climbs, time trials, hour record & Madison/6-day races on the track and he probably could have crushed MTB/Gravel if it existed at that time.

    I don't get what Israel were doing either. For beating a clear favorite you probably want other contenders to still be there and together do attacks, on the flatter sections, and put pressure on UAE. You don't want the race to be made extra hard, they were pulling hard in
    the toughest section of the route (trio of climbs Wanne-Stockeu-Haute Levée), probably their guys already felt there that their legs weren't so good after all and they stopped pulling at some point.

      Team-Loyality-Test passed! UAE executed to perfection and Pog was racing like Pog. Sure, Jonas is recovering but there seems to be a maturity and next level burst in Pog’s legs this season. Hopefully Jonas is 95% fit for TdF to challenge Pog but I do think anyone can match Tadej if he races smartly and efficiently.

    However, I would like to point it out that as soon as the big crash happened with MVDP blocked, Israel Team took the lead and pushed like crazy. This is not fair play at 90 Km still to ride. Usually this does not happen unless the race is already blew up. It has been more than 30 years that I following road cycling, racing when I was young and enjoying riding and watching each single Monumento Classic Races as well as Grandi Giri and it is common fair play that, should the peloton have a big stop like the one yesterday so far from the end and when the pace was stable, that all teams are waiting the most of the peloton to recover. Yesterday I was surprised that one single team took the decision to push just after they understood that the crash blocked several big names. I did not like it

    Well, well, well, it seems not even MVDP could throw a spanner in the works for Tadej's unstoppable train in this race. And let's give a round of applause to Romain Bardet! Second place, but hey, he was the first human across the line after Tadej's otherworldly performance at LBL. Big kudos to Romain for reminding us mere mortals that we still exist! Now, onto the Giro! But seriously, do we need to start considering shock collars for Tadej to prevent him from snatching victory in every single stage of the Giro?
    Oh, and let's all cross our fingers and toes that Jonas graces us with his presence at the Tour de France! My Danish cycling buddies keep harping on about how he needs to 'hill' (they meant 'heal,' but who's counting?), but I suspect they're secretly terrified that he won't be able to put a dent in Tadej's dominance if he's not at 100%.
    Now, here's a wild thought: if Pogi manages to snag the Giro and then somehow pulls off a win at the Tour de France (I know, I know, it's a Herculean task and a boatload of 'ifs'), should he just go for the Vuelta as well? Hey, might as well complete the grand slam of cycling domination, right?

    Not on LBL subject but in future could you comment on this new proposal by the UCI to give riders red and yellow cards as a means to improve safety or to highlight offenders? With a history of controversial and/or inconsistent commissaires' rulings during races, how would this work or make sense. Cross country skiing as an example has a similar system, but with much smaller fields during races it is often obvious who is a fault when someone is impeded, a crash happens, or there is a clear rule violation, like being out of bounds. I don't see anything in cycling that can be that well defined and those cards/penalties don't address organizer failings.

    The lady's race was spectacular.
    And on motorcycle gate the crashed going into the ditch not trying to jump out of it in my honest opinion. And it wasn't the greatest place to make your move also. When in doubt blame it on the motorcycle not the rider choosing to make his move in a bad spot.😂
    And on the rider hitting that poll. They had flag guys on other obstacles like that but not on that one and I didn't see any rider point out the obstacle also.

    Now I just come here to hear Chris talk about Bob and Christian, luv it. And I grin and say, c'mon, Chris, that Lotto-Destiny rider was totally at fault for bashing into the peloton lest he bash into a motorcycle clearly parked off the road. And I respect that you are a rider advocate and always side with the riders, no knock, seriously, but the day must come with riders are called out for their wrecking ways. And I dunno, maybe they think it is all a goof, just barge your way through and make the others deal with it, that's racing. But it isn't, actually, it is bad driving and it really doesn't make sense, especially when these crashes are taking down and out the top riders, not new recruits finding their way and plowing into road signs. And I'm not saying the guy should get in trouble, just that the sport should blow the whistle on rider errors which cause mass takedowns, if only as an appeal for riders to use those disc brakes and do something other than acting like cowboys on a cattle drive.

    Pidcock was definitely in the front group. There were no cars in the gap back to MVP’s group so when he has a mechanical he went through both groups to get support from his team car, as all the team cars were behind the MVP group. I don’t know how no commentator saw that he was near the head of the race before the accident. MVP was lucky to get back in the race as he did very little and relied on other teams, and the cars, to get back in. Tactically astute, yes, but also very fortunate

    I thought it was a pretty boring race actually. I knew Pogacar would go on La Redoute and he did. I knew (like almost everyone else) that without any serious competition he would win and of course it happened. I am not interested in "exciting" fights for the second and third place. Same is true in Paris Roubaix, it was a bit more exciting in de Ronde van Vlaanderen. We have one guy, MvdP, who won virtually everything he logically could win and that is a great achievement but we sorely missed Wout van Aert and Remco Evenepoel.
    MvdP said before the race he was okey, but not great. After the race he said he did not have the legs of Roubaix anymore and regardless he would never beat Tadej. Also he said that next season goals would be different and he clearly indicated that LBL was probably no longer on the list....That is a wise decision, it is next to impossible for him to win this one with Remco in there with Tadej....MvdP added that we will hear what his goals are for the second part of the season in this week.
