  • Animation of blood flow through the heart. How the heart works. The cycle of blood flow and the role of heart valves described.

The heart has two sides: right and left; each side has two chambers : an atrium and a ventricle. The right side of the heart is in charge of the pulmonary circuit, it receives oxygen-poor blood from the body and pumps it into the lungs for gas exchange. The left side of the heart is in charge of the systemic circuit, it receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and pumps it through the aorta to the rest of the body.
The heart has four valves : two atrioventricular valves (AV valves) and two semilunar valves. Their function is to ensure that the blood flows only in one direction throughout the heart, i.e. they prevent blood backflow.

remember too the other commonly used names for the valves:
tricuspid valve = right atrioventricular (AV) valve
pulmonary valve = pulmonary semilunar valve
mitral valve = biscupid valve = left atrioventricular (AV) valve
aortic valve = aortic semilunar valve

This is such a helpful video!! It really helped me better understand the concept.
However, there are a few steps that he didn't mention that might be helpful to know. These are the steps which I was taught in my Anatomy class at my University.
    1. Superior Vena Cava / Inferior Vena Cava.
    2. Right Atrium.
    3. Right Atrioventricular Valve.
    4. Right Ventricle.
    5. Pulmonary Semilunar Valve. (Semilunar means its traveling out of the heart)
    6. Pulmonary trunk, then into the pulmonary artery.
    7. Lungs.
    8. From the lungs back into the heart through the Pulmonary Veins.
    9. Left Atrium.
    10. Left Atrioventricular Valve.
    11. Left Ventricle.
    12. Aortic Semilunar Valve.
    13. Aorta (to the rest of the body).
    Hope that's helpful!

The right atrioventricular valve is the same things as the tricuspid valve i believe. The Pulmonary semilunar valve is sometimes shortened to just pulmonary valve. Left atrioventricular valve is the same as the bicuspid valve. The aortic semilunar valve is sometimes shortened to just aortic valve.

To whoever wants this... (Copied this from the video).
    - The pathway of blood flows through the heart. Oxygen poor blood from your body returns to the right atrium of the heart. Blood from your upper body returns to the superior vena cava. Blood from the lower body returns to the inferior vena cava. As the right atrium is filled with blood, it contracts, the tricuspid valve opens and blood is pumped into the right ventricle of the heart. When the right ventricle is full, the tricuspid valve closes to prevent blood from flowing back into the atrium. The right ventricle contracts, the pulmonary valve opens and blood is pumped into the pulmonary artery and to your lungs. The pulmonary valve closes to prevent blood from flowing back into the ventricle. Oxygen rich blood from the lungs returns to the left atrium of the heart, as the left atrium is filled with blood, it contracts and the mitral valve opens and blood is pumped into the left ventricle of the heart. This occurs at the same time as the left atrium pumps blood into the right ventricle on the other side of the heart. As the left ventricle is full, the mitral valve closes, the aortic valve opens, the left ventricle contracts and oxygen rich blood is pumped into the aorta to reach all parts of the body. This happens at the same time as the right ventricle pumps blood into the pulmonary artery on the other side of the heart. The aortic valve quickly closes to prevent blood from flowing back to the heart. Meanwhile, the atria have filled with blood and the cycle repeats itself.

Thanks for this video and ı want to give information about transporting of blood. First of all when ventricle can pump approximately 80 percent of blood. Blood that can't pump from ventricle use supplying of heart itself. Your animation show us that entire of blood goes to vessels. At the same time when blood filled to atrium approximately 80 percent of blood don't wait contraction and directly goes to ventricle. When atrium contraction 20 percent of blood goes to ventricle. I think It's very amazing information
