Her Golden Hour concert was insane. The first ever female Korean artist to play at the Seoul Olympic STADIUM!!! 88,000 people in attendance and Melon said that over 340,000 people were in line to purchase. it sold out in 5 minutes and plenty of celebs were in attendance (some members from BTS, Twice, several well known actors, and ITZY/Jay Park were guest performers)
This song was written by her in 2011. That's how long she has been in the scene, she is an icon of the kpop industry
Here a brief, as brief as I can get, IU primer.
EARLY LIFE
She had a difficult childhood after her father co signed a loan for someone and things when South. They lost everything and some of the money was owed to loan sharks, so IU and her younger brother were sent to live their grandmother in a single apartment. The apartment was so roach infested it was eventually condemned and then they moved in with other relatives, who treated them badly.
AUDITIONING AND TRAINING
IU started to audition for entertainment agencies at the age of 13. She was rejected 20 times before a small agency signed her. One of the reasons for so many rejections is due to the fact that many agencies are looking to put together groups and looking for a particular type of voice or look etc to fit into a group or group concept. Loen the agency she signed with initially was planning on her being apart of a group, but it didn't take then long to realize that she was best suited as a solo act. She trained for 10 months and debuted at the age of 15. Blackpink trained for almost 10 years before debuting, although a good portion of that was finding the right mix. BTS members on average trained for something like 7 years before debuting.
DEBUT
Her debut was not a successful one, primarily because of the song that the agency decide for her to sing. IU tells of people yelling at her to get off the stage, someone even calling her a pig. In fairness to the agency the song they picked is actually a very good song and showed off IU's vocal range. But the subject was about the ending of a love affair and in 2008 koop fans were into bubblegum type music. The MV for the song (English title Lost Child, Korean title MIA) was withheld and released in 2011.
CUTSY PHASE
As a result of this the agency change direction and IU songs confirmed to more of the bubblegum style in song and appearance. A phase that IU didn't not care for at all but started to get her attention in the industry.
BREAK THROUGH
While IU had a couple of songs do well on the charts, at least 1 reaching #1, it was her release of the song Good Day, in 2010, that gained her wide spread national attention and attention around Southeast Asia mainly for her performance on the 3 high notes.
GAINING POPULARITY
Her popularity continued to grow as she appeared on many variety shows and MC'd several TV shows. One 2011 with Sulli, who would 8 years later become 1 of 3 of IU's friends to take her own life and upon which the song Eight with Suga is based. She also started her acting career in 2010 appearing in a supporting role on the highly popular high school drama Dream High.
In 2011 she wrote her first song to be released, for the kdrama The Greatest Love. This was the 1st song where IU received solo writing credit. That song was Hold My Hand which made it into the top 10 and stayed on the charts for a good number of weeks. When IU's CZcams channel released her 2019 Love Poem concert performance (the one you just watched) the song highed the charts for again 8 years after it initial release making it to number 2 or 3 on the charts.
IU acting career continued to grow as well as she appeared in a number of kdrama's, like You Are the Best and The Producers.
IU TAKES CONTROL OF HER MUSIC
In 2014 IU assumes control of her music and becomes very active in the writing, composing and producing. With the exception of songs she remarked (she has 2 albums of covers/remakes) virtually all of her songs she had a hand in writing, composing and producing a number of them as well. In 2017 she won Album of the Year, Song Writer of the Year and Producer of the Year and Artist of the Year. She would receive Album of the Year honors again in 2018 and 2021. In total IU has received 313 nominations for her Music and acting and won 130 of those, including 3 for modeling.
IU has been to the US one time in 2014 to attend and perform at the KPOP convention in LA. IU was surprised how many people recognized her on the street. Afterward back in Korea during an Interview IU expressed her frustration at not being able to communicate with her fans like she likes to do because her English wasn't very good. She told the interviewer that before she returned she would learn English. She hired an English teacher and started to work.
IU CONTINUES TO SET RECORDS AN EARN RESPECT
Ater the kpop convention in LA the New York Times wrote that IU was showing the way forward for the KPOP industry. In 2018 The NY Times published an article on the influence off music on culture and listed the 25 Most Influential Artist in the the world. IU was 9th on the list. In the January 2023 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine released their update list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. IU became the first Korean to make that list.
In 2019 IU became the first Korean female soloist to hold a concert at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul and the act to perform in a 360 degree stage confirmation. Her Love Poem concert remains as one of the best by any Korean act.
After the pandemic shut down everything IU's hope's of holding a concert in the Olympic Stadium seemed to be disappearing as construction was scheduled to start on it after the pandemic and would last several years. But when the start of Construction was delayed they contacted IU and asked if she was interested in holding a concert. And thus the 2 day Golden Hour, Beneath the Orange Sun concert was scheduled for Sept. of 2022. The 90,000 available tickets sold out in 30 minutes with over 450,000 people waiting in the queue. IU became the first Korean female singer to perform their.
In 2022 she attended Cannes Film Festival with her co stars of the movie Broker where she was the lead female, which was her first commercial film and was invited to Cannes. The film received a 12 minute standing Ovation. She got the role after the Japanese director saw her performance in the Kdrama My Mister one of the highest rated kdrama's in Korean TV history. Her 2nd commercial film was released this year Dream. She is currently filming her first Kdrama since her highly successful Hotel Del Luna.
In 2022 IU became a Global Ambassador for GUCCI, as her modeling career continues. She models for New Balance, Pepsi and a number of Korean brands.
IU has hinted at a possible world tour in the near the future but didn't offer any more information than that. She between her Acting, Singing, song writing, composing, producing and modeling she may very well be one of the business people in show business. She is rank as the 4th wealth female in Korea and in a mainstay on Forbes list of charitable givers.
Of course I only touched the surface of who she is and what she has achieved. She is a special talent wrapped inside a small body with a heart big enough to fill the Olympic stadium. And her fans are her #1 priority which is reflected in everything she does. Her concert in the Olympic stadium is a case in point. She could have had the stage set up at one end and in doing so could have added another 15,000 seats, but she already felt that too many fans were too far away. She could have sold seats with very limited view but she said no. She sang one song from a hot air balloon that was guided around the stadium at the 2nd level to she could feel connected with those fans.

This was her second concert at the Olympic Gymnastic Arena. The first had the stage at one end. I believe they were able to seat 10,000. By moving the stage to the center, seating was increased to 14,000. There's a video of IU getting the crowd to do the wave. It's pretty funny. They wouldn't stop until she told them she couldn't sing until they stopped.

IU is a beloved national icon and is considered a legend in K-Pop. She has gained and continues to win the love of millions easily, and many do not see her worth as an artist because she was first known as an actress but she is indeed a woman and an artist whom everyone agreed to love.

I am so glad you are checking IU more and she is best on live shows and that’s what she loves most too! IU always sings with her live band and herself plays classical and electric guitars and the drums. IU is one of the best lyricist and the composer and all her songs have deep meanings and metaphors and this is one of the reason I love her and BTS! IU will celebrate her 15 years this year and pretty much all artist and idols want to be like her and JK from BTS is one of her biggest fan ever since she appeared on TV and always talked about her on TV and interviews and that made some of the jealous and crazy fans to hate her so he stopped for her safety reason. Recently, Suga and JHope did few things with IU and HYBE had IU sing for their reality idol competition TV show. I suggest for you to check out her last year’s concert clips for Eight and My Sea, you will be blown away and JK attended both shows and JHope went one day with JK. Honestly, the best way to get to know her is by watching IU TV videos. She has documented a good portion of her life through them, as well as numerous behind the scenes segments and interviews. There isn't really, to the best of my knowledge, a single, all-encompassing video that covers the many facets of her life or talent, so it will take a bit more time to get there. What I will say, however, is that you will get an unfettered, genuine idea of who she is not only as a performer but as a person. She doesn't hide behind facades with her fandom. They've been with her for so long and love her so much to a great extent because the human being is so lovely and relatable, in addition to her being an insane performer and writer.

Here some TMI . Actually iu's band for her concerts or albums is different from palette's band. Iu worked for ten years with her band on iu team and now they are so popular . One of them ( jukjae) is solo artist now and the other one are so famous that the other artists wants or are working with them. So she made palette's band which is made from young and talented artist and unveiled them on 2020 eight live performance. I don't mean she's the reason for her bands popularity but she really valeued them and that makes people to wants them.

John, as I’m sure you know, she records most of her layered and background vocals, and you’ll see her singing live clips with backing tracks, but mostly at concerts, she has her band and background singers that have been with her a long time… and the sound feels so much more genuine and real… there’s a concert ending combo of Black Out and Last Night Story wit a little more of rock and silly flare you might like… and how she puts her band members and staff out front at the end is just plain cute

-she debuted when she was about 15
-she was not very popular until she released Good Day, which literally made her a national star
-when she was still young she had this "nations little sister" image (ie cute and innocent)
-she's developed a lot since then, experimenting with diff genres, her discography is so varied
-she's participated in songwriting at Least since her album Chatshire and also this song you listened to
-she's very well liked for her ballads, smart lyrics, and clear voice
-lots of idols also look up to her and the newer ones grew up with her
-not super relevant to music, but she's also become an impressive actor in shows & movies

There is a special story behind this song. "Hold My Hand," is the first song IU wrote and composed in 2011 as an original soundtrack for the drama 'The Greatest Love'. Because it is an OST, not her original track release, it was underrated in terms of music production. The song was poorly recorded with "not too serious arrangement" and then credited to the Drama. It received much love and highly praised by the Drama audience at the time but was not officially promoted to the public or fans. Just like "Our Happy Ending" a special OST she wrote and sang for her original Drama "Hotel Del Luna", the track was not listed in any of her albums, and she only performed it live during an encore or second encore by fans request.
Nine years later, IU perform this song with a new arrangement by herself for the first time during the "360 stage Love Poem Concert 2019". After EDAM release official Love Poem Concert Blue Ray, "Hold My Hand" got more attention. The song feels "new" for many new generations of UAENA especially for international fans that are not related to the Drama, and they keep mentioning to the label if that song is a new track for the comeback album? A year later, by the end of 2020, EDAM released an official live performance MV for this song as an answer to the fans. The reception is more surprising, the song is suddenly climbing up to the top ten ranks of major music charts Melon Music, Bugs Music, and Genie Music ten years after its release.

Actually, its difficult to understand how big IU in S.Korea or how IU can be that big in one sit, or in one documentary XD
Abt documentary, she released one last year, but I think its more of a “diary of 20’s IU” than a “documentary”. Also its made for fans/ uaenas, so its more sentimental/ private and not explanative.

-this is 2011's song (!!!) and sang in 2019, but ppl still know it and hyping it
-bcs of this live video (firstly, the fancam version getting viral, then iu's agency posted this official live clip), this song climbed back to top20 chart on Oct/ Nov 2020, and stay there for another 2.5 years. Its 2011 songs!!! XD

BTS is more popular abroad than in Korea, and in Korea the younger generation mostly likes it, but IU is a singer that all generations like. From the perspective of a national singer, IU rather than BTS.
