  • What do you put under shingles? The answer is underlayment. Underlayment is a necessary part of every roofing system. There is underlayment for tile, metal and shingle roofs, each serving the purpose of separating the roofing material from the plywood underneath. In this video, we’ll look at the process of underlayment installation on a shingle roof.
    We are an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred contractor, and in this video we are installing Owens Corning Deck Defense synthetic underlayment.

    After watching about two dozen videos, your video is the first that 1.) doesn't spend a lot of time talking about stuff that isn't relevant to the video and 2.) explains why you're overlapping, nailing, etc the way that you are. This is the closest I've gotten to having a dad or uncle come over and teach me how to fix my roof, and I want to thank you for that. I actually think I can make a roof repair after watching all of your videos.

    Awesome videos. I'm going to use Titanium UDL 50 for underlayment and and Weatherlock Flex Ice and Water Shield, both my Owens Corning. What length of nail do you use for underlayment? I'm in Hemet in Southern California.

    • @RoofRepairSpecialist
      @RoofRepairSpecialist  Před 3 měsíci

      I would go 5/8 or 3/4. I like going the minimum length. Once you install your shingles it no longer matters cause the shingles hold down the underlayment.

    • @SFMedic176
      @SFMedic176 Před 3 měsíci

      @@RoofRepairSpecialist Thank you very much for the reply. I'm going to do a repatch of my clay tile roof. I went with the Titanium UDL 50 because it says it works well with tile. My house is well ventilated and built in 1991 and it wasn't a track home.....I should have "no breathing issues" with the Titanium UDL 50 you think?......And last question: What size of nail would you use for nailing the clay tiles? ....Thank you again for your information and time.

    I had like 3 leaks after dry in, is this OK? We had rain so I was unable to place the shingles. It looks like all the leaks are where the osb boards gaps are. Also the leaks were small.

    • @RoofRepairSpecialist
      @RoofRepairSpecialist  Před rokem

      Leaks are usually not fine. You should find out what you did wrong. It might have been the wind lifting up the underlayment.
      Leaking between OSB is normal. Water finds the easiest route to escape.

  • @kshepard52
    @kshepard52 Před 9 měsíci

    I just scanned it but didn't see how you handle combustion and plumbing vents.
    Some synthetic recommends wrapping the underlayment around and over the edges of the roof panels about a half-inch shy of the bottom of the vertical flange of the drip edge. That way the absorbent edges of the sheathing is covered.

    • @RoofRepairSpecialist
      @RoofRepairSpecialist  Před 9 měsíci

      I don’t think it is very critical, if water gets there you’re going to have a leak regardless.
